Building FV Replenish BF28 a 6.9m x 3.0m aluminium boat for the Scottish fishing fleet. Poleson

I had originally planned to build myself this boat but when James got eyes on it’s plans on his visit to Shetland to talk about a new boat, he had to have this one. So bravely he let me build the first of this design for him. I hope you enjoy the video.

When you built this vessel--what was her cruising speed and top speed. What is the size of her fuel tanks so what is her cruising range? What did this vessel cost in pounds or US dollars? What is the hydraulic crane used for? I like the craftsmanship of this vessel.

Incredible performance if You can cruise 8 knots with power to spare ! Considering the WL and beam, would expect much less, this is almost a semi displacement speed for that length and beam! This would be a brilliant roomy pocket trawler hull for leisure boating!

Thank you. it is a very nice boat to be aboard and has proven to run well with following sea even with the extended bow. Its heavy to for an aluminium boat at 4 tons.

@@POLESONMARINE Interesting! I hav seen these types of bulbs in France & and Mediterranean. On videos from France boats with this style bow seam to actually broach dangerously in difficult following seas, entering a bar. I really like the hull design, as DIY guy would build it in plywood & epoxy though. Wonder if a couple of big foot outboards would work as good as the diesel ?

@@XSAILOR65 Yes i was worried about that and it probably will broach on the right day. I took the keel down from stem to stern at 8 degrees and a good size rudder all to try and keep the boat tracking straight with good response to steering inputs. It is very square to the water at midships and doesn't roll easily, i wonder if that helps combat the broach too. Like the opposite to the effect of steering a small fast boat by standing on one side. There are some great videos now of boats entering harbours with following sea and a lot can be learned from watching them i think. Cheers

@@POLESONMARINE Think You are spot on! The French boats broaching usually doing that during a heavy roll over( close to that) they have sharper bows! As a curiosity can tell in my better days worked on VLCC regularly calling Flotta and Sullom Voe. Unfortunately never had time to see anything much, possibly a short stay in a pub or somethin like that. A couple of hurricanes did experience in the area though :)

What does a hydraulic gear box with a trawling valve do? So the main engine ( what horse power? ) runs 2 alternators for charging 12 volt systems--yet the main engine also powers a saltw water wash pump? As well as hydraulics ? Such as deck winches to haul pots or nets? What did this entire engine system cost? I really liked this film. What fishing is this boat set up for? Can the load on the engine be reduced when the wash pump nd the hydraulic pump are not in use? ( to get better milage for the fishing boat )?

Hi Barton, Glad you like the video, thanks for the kind comments. Hull speed is displacement speeds so she does 7.5 cruising but can nearly push 10 knots with throttle right over. The engine is derated for licence purposes so only 49hp/ 37kw. The tanks are only 220L total as she is a day fishing boat for hand line mackerel fishing and lobster pot fishing near home port. The crane if for moving larger fish bins around deck and on to the pontoon. All the pumps are clutch operated from wheelhouse so are only engaged when required. The twin alternators are to keep on top of heavy battery use by the automatic jig fishing reels that do the fishing for cod and mackerel. Search for Belitronic electric jigging machine Sweden. The tolling valve just lets a little oil bypass the drive in the gearbox allowing you to slow the prop speed right down if you are trying to just hold position or mauver in to a berth. Cheers Tommy

Please could you advise as to average cruising speed estimated whilst fully laden/light, also, the rating of the Sole SM103 - DE rated to 1500rpm at 37Kw. Could you make this 6.9m vessel into a crabbing/Lobster vessel with the possibility of longlining? Many thanks. Keep the good work up.

Hi the boat does 8 knots empty or full. She is working creels now and also jigging for mackerel. Im hoping to see the boat in action in the next few weeks and make a video of her working. Cheers

If I was a young bloke and were reliving my life I would like to fabricate a boat like this but if possible put sails on it and keep the fit out as simple and affordable as possible .

Hi Bruce, I wish i knew more about sails personally. I would like to sail and did a bit at school but the convenience of engine power and reliability of modern engines led me away from the sailing.
