Ah yes, here we begin the switch from "Catra no!" to "No! Catra!"

An important moment of symbolism that many misunderstand is at the very beginning. When Catra is looking down at the two corridors, one light and one dark, and she goes down the dark one, many see that and think it means she's being evil cause, you know, darkness. But think about it. Light is Horde Prime's whole motif. His color scheme is almost entirely white. Meanwhile, darkness is safety for Catra. Darkness is where she runs to, where Adora came to find her in the flashback. So her choosing darkness isn't her choosing evil, it's her choosing the opposite.

The flashback scene is so much more sad when you realize Catra was not only afraid of losing Adora because she was her only friend, but also because Shadow Weaver said point blank that the only reason she kept Catra alive was because Adora liked her. Catra fully believes that love is limited and that you can only give so much love away, meaning that if Adora liked Lonnie, Catra believed she couldn't love her. Catra's entire existence rested on the fact that Adora was her friend, so Catra would naturally be even more scared of Adora leaving even though she was already so afraid of it because she cared for Adora so much.

Yeah season 5 did really redeem Catra in my eyes. I won't lie there is a part of me that is bias since I hate relationships where one partner is over possessive and controlling, one of my parent's had issues with that, and by attacking Adora she actually risked driving her away.

I also think it's worth noting how similar Catra and Glimmer are in this way. Remember back to Princess Prom when Bow ended up attending with Perfuma and how personally Glimmer took it? She basically told him that him having other friends than her would eventually lead to him not needing her anymore. I like how the show draws similarities to how Catra and Glimmer are insecure in this very specific way. Glimmer grew up in a much healthier and supportive environment than Catra and therefore seems to be better at dealing with these issues and more willing to admit when she's wrong or has messed up. Catra, on the other hand, tends to double down, even when it's blatantly self-destructive. It's cool to me how we see how similar these two are, especially when they have no one to confide in but each other.

The key to Catra's character is she was raised by Shadow Weaver to believe two things: 1. Love is finite, therefore Adora can't love Catra and anyone else at the same time 2. Shadow Weaver only kept Catra alive because Adora liked her, and if that ever stopped being true Catra's life would be at risk Every decision Catra makes up until this episode is governed by these two ideas, even when Shadow Weaver is no longer a threat, Catra just mentally swaps her with Hordak and then Horde Prime

This episode, and specifically Mosco's reaction to it, reminds me of something Red from Overly Sarcastic Productions said about redemption arcs broadly, but specifically right after showing some clips from this specific episode on screen, in her Trope Talk on "Are We The Baddies?": "If redemption arcs are only for characters who haven't really done anything too bad, they're not really redemption arcs, they're self-indulgent angst arcs."

Empathy is among the hardest things we as people can feel, because it requires we set aside ourselves. Anyone can change, whether they "deserve" to or not is irrelevant, anyone can choose to be better at any time. That's the core of Catra's story to me and it's why I appreciate it. I also appreciate that they made her so awful for so long, they didn't pull punches by just making her kind of angry and dickish or angsty. She was an awful person, she did genuinely terrible things, you understand what caused her to act that way and you understood what she herself endured but those did not justify her actions. Now she chooses to do something good in act that she likely assumed would mean her own death. It doesn't erase her transgressions, it doesn't exonerate her, nothing will ever actually make up for what shes done, but just because you can't fix the past doesn't mean you have to continue repeating it. Accept where you are in life, accept what you've done, accept you cannot fix whats already happened and resolve to do better. No matter how far you've fallen you are never beyond hope, you just have to choose it. And if you are fortunate enough to have people willing to be there for you, let them and be willing to accept their support in those positive changes.

I wouldn't say that Catra was really a bully during her childhood. Later on sure, but she believed in the idea that love is finite because Shadow Weaver ingrained that into her head, which lead to her having severe abandonment issues and pushing everyone away. It was more her being scared and not wanting to face her issues rather than being a bully.
@TherealRNOwwfpooh
@TherealRNOwwfpooh 6 ай бұрын
Plus, even without Shadow Weaver essentially telling her that love is finite (which is why kitten Catra internalized kid Adora trying to befriend Lonnie as rejecting Catra, because in Catra's mind, if love is finite, then Adora only has so much love to give before it runs out & if she befriended anyone else, it meant that Adora could no longer love Catra, which Catra wouldn't stand for) & that if Catra did anything to damage Adora's future potential, the dark sorceress would end the magicat on the spot, Catra IS still a literal CAT person & CATS, both real & fictionalized, tend to be fiercely territorial creatures who have their preferred Favorite Person -- that is, if they were raised by/taken in by humans -- whom they rely on for safety (giving them shelter from nature's harsher elements & protecting them from such forces as well as any potential predators), sustenance (providing food & drink), care (cleaning their litter box, getting rid of hairballs, and helping brush their fur when needed), and affection (their Favorite Person pets them, resulting in them purring, licking their Favorite Person and even lightly headbutting & barely nipping, as the latter two are also ways felines clearly indicate that they love you), meanwhile cats in the wild often either live solitary lives or else, they form PRIDES (and I'm not talking about the fact that Catra IS canonically lesbian, although that is an aspect of her character, of course, I'm more so referring to the prides of big cats, such as Lions) among one another, whereby one dominant male leads the rest until he's either killed, defeated by an usurper to his reign, or brings forth an heir to his proverbial (and in the case of _The Lion King_ franchise, literal) throne; Slightly off-topic, long-winded tangent: The lion pride of _The Lion King_ is a genuine monarchy (going from Mufasa [prior to his tragic death via Wildebeest stampede], being held hostage by murderous uncle Scar, and finally, reclaimed by rightful heir Simba to be later inherited by his daughter Kiara in _The Lion King II: Simba's Pride_ after her romance with Scar's own purported heir Kovu finally reunited the once divided pride).

This is why I love Catra, as a character. There's no simple "she's just a terrible person," or "she's actually a good person deep down"; what we get instead is _so much more interesting!_ Lashing out at Adora for wanting to have other friends is wrong, but Shadow Weaver has told her that she would _murder_ Catra if Adora didn't like her. And, that starts the downward spiral. Catra never really tried to be a 'better person', but by the time she realized she needed to, she'd already done things which were Unforgivable - so, what's the point in not being monstrous, if a monster is what she's become? She's not a bad person who shows rare hints of goodness. She's not a good person who does bad things. What she is, is a _complicated mess_ of a person, and that's so much more compelling, imo. The 'baptism' scene is one of the most horrifying scenes in the entire show. Personally, I don't think there's even any sort of sci-fi mind-wipe magics going on there; I think all it does is inflict incomprehensible pain. I think it's the context that matters: framing this as punishment for taking a name; making that connection between the name and the torture. I think Prime is trying to make _having his own identity_ a PTSD trigger for Hordak. And that's fucking nightmarish. Also: alien clones that can be knocked out by hitting them in the back of the neck? I can't help but wonder if that's a deliberate reference to the Sontarans from Doctor Who. Wouldn't be the only such sci-fi reference ND included in the show.

Ah, it feels good to reach the turning point. Season 3 brought Catra to her worst, and S4 brought her to her lowest. S5 has a lot of work to put the broken pieces back together, and this episode does a lot of the heavy lifting. Prime gave Catra no way to rebuild her walls, to find a way to manipulate and control her situation. She's just left in her loneliness to reflect. Sacrifice goes a long way to reformation (not redemption).

Also, Catra never even considered saving herself from Horde Prime. At this point she didn't believe she deserved to be saved, she didn't believe she deserved to be loved at all, since the only people that loved her, either chose to be by someone else's side (Adora and Shadow Weaver), or were driven away by her own self-destructive behaviour (Scorpia and the other cadets). She believes she is going to die alone in that ship, and she fully embraces that. She is only happy that she finally got to do one good thing for the person she loves most and to finally apologized to her.

One thing about Catra and Adora's relationship is that, given how they were brought up, Catra did need time away from Adora so that she could find her own self-worth separate from her identity as Adora's friend. That could have happened in a much better way, not to mention the entire lot of another toxic issues she had to deal with after because of how it was dealt with, but that doesn't change that if Catra didn't get the chance to become her own self, separate frim Adora, she'd never be able to be healed, much less become who she needed to be for Adora herself, in the future.

Other commenters have mentioned Overly Sarcastic Production's video on "Are We The Baddies?", which references, among others, Catra's arc. Definitely worth watching.

They actually also made a video on Parallel Arcs specifically about the Glimmer/Catra dynamic.

3:48 so I believe it is actually inverted, and Five By Five takes did an excellent video about this (but you can't watch that before the end of the series because spoilers, so I'll do my best to tell you): Catra has chosen the light for much of her life. The light of being in charge, the light of being in power, the light of Horde Prime. Here, she chooses the dark of the unknown. Of changing what she has clung to for so long. The dark, where Adora could always find her. The dark, where those who dare stand up to Horde Prime must hide.

I love mosco absolutely losing her shit at the end. Her getting mad at horde prime was the best. Also, we knew you cared about Catra mosco, I'm glad you admitted it yourself😂😂 aaah can't wait for more reactions

Definitely feel you there. I feel like sometimes people are too unfair to Catra (which i completely understand because of everything that happened) but still. When you apologize for your shitty behavior and actually show you mean it through your actions that you've become a better person ..... Then yeah- It's pointless to keep holding on too much onto the person they were It doesn't mean you'll forget it, or that their actions got erased or any of that. But it does mean theyre a human being, and like any human being, is able to grow. But this is not shade towards you, this really is the episode where Catra finally takes the first step through her sacrifice-

Catra never “sold her out.” Absolutely nothing that Catra COULD tell Horde Prime would make ANY difference to Adora coming.
@Jeremy_theGent

Catra said it herself; Prime already knows Adora is coming, he's just looking for a validation of Catra's loyalty. If she tells him it's Adora, it's nothing he doesn't already know. If she tells him it's not Adora, he'll know she's lying, so what does it accomplish?

Woo! I've been loving watching all the reactions to other shows(Such as Hazbin Hotel!) but its finally time to see the reaction to S5E3! Woooo! Something you end up learning from this show: If the episode has to deal with a flashback of characters as being children(Adora and Catra for example) then you know it's going to be a traumatizing experience! :P But also, they're adorable! I know it can be seen as a rather obvious trope to use, but I still love it whenever shows use things like "does the character go down the light corridor or the dark corridor?" or the moments where a character's image is covered half in shadow. They're great ways of just subtly showing you the struggle the character is going through. OMG I love the note placed at 4:47. I do fully agree with the point you're making in that time too, but I'm so excited to watch how your feelings change and what scenes really impact you the most! LOL The side eye at 5:45 is just wonderful. The additional note 6:32 only makes this all the better. :P Mosco: "This episode is TRYING to make me feel bad for Catra. But I need to SEE that he actions have actually changed." Me: Laughing as I wait for the scene to happen. I love the fact that pretty much every person who has watched this show has had the exact same facial reaction as Catra during the cultist bath scene. Fear, disgust, concern, its just perfectly disturbing really. Mosco: "Catra, you're just not good with people, are ya?" Me: Exactly! She's not a horrible person who committed war crimes, she's just bad at dealing with people!(Joke of course :P) Isn't it great to have a nice, silly moment thanks to Entrapta? Silly, funny moments are great!

catra is a little like me, and when i was little almost all my emotions came with a good ole heap of mad on the side. sad? also mad. scared? also mad. hurt feelings? also mad. happy? also kinda mad. overwhelmed? super mad. if you're mean to people first it's not that They Leave You, You get to Leave Them and that hurts a little less. a little.
