CATRA MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COST. What a tremendously beautiful episode, another MASTERPIECE in the show. Welcome to the reaction/first time watching/commentary of SHE-RA AND THE PRINCESSES OF POWER 5x3 ("Corridors") and we experience the long-awaited and complicated beginning of the redemption of one of the most beautifully written characters I've ever witnessed: CATRA. Visual storytelling at its finest, 10/10 use of music and motifs, some of the most memorable voice performances yet, hard-hitting dialogue, and just a huge emotional punch to the gut. I'll just say it: Catra is the Magnum Opus of SHE-RA & THE PRINCESSES OF POWER.

One of my favs. The fist time I watched... Damn... In my whole life no movie or series, no for all public, no for adults, has make me cry that way. No just tears, literally crying. All before was constructed perfectly for the moment "i'm sorry, for eveything" to hit. Well, that because I understand very well the point of view of Catra. I'm not a feline war crimal but I know her well

This is one of the best of the season (and yes, for the entire show. The seasons go from good to better). Also is a very important one, and an important also for the envolve of Catra, it is a turning point for her.

It's even crazier to think that, given her actions here and in later episodes, Catra is laughing in Horde Primes face, 100% expecting to die. When she says 'do one good thing with my life' she literally thinks it's the last thing she'll ever do, and she'd rather die than watch Adora get herself killed.
@KeshmarOrange
@KeshmarOrange Жыл бұрын
I honestly think that she wasn't expecting to die. She probably thought of that cursed baptism and considered all the things worse than death we'd have to go through even if she did die eventually. But that's just me.
@TalkingSkullStudios
@TalkingSkullStudios Жыл бұрын
@@KeshmarOrange Could be. If she believed that the baptism really wiped your mind, that's basically still death anyway. I always kinda read into Catra's reaction to being rescued in ep 6 that she genuinely thought she'd never see Adora again. She really had no plan for what came after her capture.

Sometimes it's the things you take away from the show that make the most impact. The subtext behind Catra's actions are unbelievably human and real, this episode is on another level 💔

I love the use of the two corridors, one light and one dark, as the metaphor for Catra's choice - especially given how the show has taken the typical "light = good, dark = bad" trope and twisted it around. Here, light is the dominion of Horde Prime ("Cast out the shadows! Cast out the shadows"); meanwhile, all the places where Catra feels safe and loved, and where she had her soft moments with Adora, are all in the dark corners. So Catra chooses the "dark corridor" in doing the right thing. Brilliant writing.

Catra's never genuinely said sorry before. It's one thing to just throw a sorry out there after you like...bump into someone or hurt them on reflex, but to genuinely say with full conviction that you are indeed sorry for everything, how you hurt someone... She's never done that before, at least not to my recollection. I could be misremembering. It's so Catra to laugh in the face of her alleged demise.
@darquidarqui
@darquidarqui Жыл бұрын
That is true! I realized while editing that she said it before but never with this meaning. It's actually brilliant they bring that up in this episode and just might add to the rewatch value from the beginning of the show! Oh Catra, she must be protected at all cost, that was a big step for her 💔
@Alfwin
@Alfwin Жыл бұрын
One of the best episodes of the entire show! You mentioned that Shadow Weaver only kept Catra around because Adora liked her - consider the opposite. Shadow Weaver pretty much said that she would _murder_ Catra if Adora didn't care for her - which means that as far as Catra was concerned, Adora liking someone other than her is a genuine threat to her life. It's no wonder she was so possessive of her. As for Hordak remembering things: it's never explicitly stated, but I don't think there's any sort of magical total mind-wipe. My interpretation is that whatever Prime injected him with at the end of the s4 finale was just some sort of sedative to dull his emotions and critical reasoning ability, and the "baptism" just inflicted intense pain with the goal of associating that pain with defiance and turning the act of even thinking about stepping out of line into a PTSD trigger. And yes, the "baptism" scene is easily one of the most deeply horrifying scenes I've seen in any TV show - let alone one that claims to be a kids' show!
@darquidarqui
@darquidarqui Жыл бұрын
Totally amazing! Hmmm that's an interesting perspective, never really thought of that. I think that's part of the tragedy of that whole dynamic, because there have been many misunderstandings between Adora and Catra that has left to devastating emotional moments between them. Mmmmm that's super well worded, thank you! It makes sense that it would some kind of radical sedative that is helped with the "baptism" process. For me this is not a "kids" show! It's so much more mature and sophisticated than one might think! Thank you once again for your thoughtful comments! 🙌

Something I didn't think about when I originally saw this episode, when Horde Prime viewed Hordak's memories of Catra that would have included her laughing at and mocking him at what she expected to be her execution. He'll remember that from Hordak's perspective and here she is doing it again, to him this time, treating him with the same disrespect and mockery as a defective clone. For someone like Prime that's surely got to sting.

Corridors is almost on par with Hero for me as one of the most masterfully-executed episodes of the show, for sure, and 100% my favourite Catra-centric episode. She's so far gone down the path of "darkness", so far past redemption even in her own eyes, that only an act so drastic could possibly give hope again that she might actually be able to come back from this. Totally in agreement with everything you said regarding love and possessiveness, and I'd go even further personally and to the "it's only human" thing also add: she's a cat. Cats are so possessive and territorial, once they have decided someone is their person, that's it, they're their person and no one else's, right? So I'd wager her possessiveness is that much more entrenched, or at least that's how I always interpreted it. Loved watching you slowly losing your mind over this episode (and enjoying the wonderfully-paced humour of it), and I'm so excited to see how you felt about the next two! As per usual, brilliant job with the editing, loving the recurring addition of the error messages 🤘 (oh, and hi, Korra! she's so damn cute)

Both episodes are beyond incredible, when She-Ra is peak, IT'S TRULY PEAK! Oh yesss, the fact that Catra is also a cat adds a ton to that behavior and it's such a beautiful visual metaphor for every feeling and action of hers. She really wants to be Adora's first choice in everything, and that's part of the heartbreak! Hahaha thank you so so much Pencil! Trying to make every video as entertaining as possible! First of all, your Star Wars themed intros are awesome. Bobbing my head like I'm watching it for the first time. secondly Glimmer and Catra are basically the same people who grew up in different situations: - Attachment to singular friends: This one especially. Except that Bow knew how to set boundaries and acknowledge a friends feelings. Whereas Catra only knows how to see things as black and white ("You're only supposed to be my friend") and Adora time and time again Adora whos only value she thinks comes from being "right" (by shadow weavers standards) - Ambitious - Hot headed - Determined

The green glow around Glimmer probably was intended to give reason for her being able to breath in space though it's worth noting that a human being can last for about 10 - 15 seconds in the vacuum of space before passing out and around 3 minutes before dying from exposure. As Bow and Adora were expediant in getting Glimmer inside, it's not out of the realm of possiblity that she would be back in a safe environment before the passed out.

It is for me absolute greatest ending for promise trilogy, (Promise, Remember, and now Corridors), Catra is finaly able to say sorry, just her realising how much she loved Adora and Glimmer requesting one good thing And she did, just for Adora, one person, who promised her friendship, she knows she was bad friend and now she is able to forgive Adora for leaving her, this is her last attempt to save promise, that united them so long ago, even if she had to die for it

So, I'm taking some of this from the video 'Why Catra Matters' by Five By Five Takes (a video you should _definitely_ watch if you've finished the show) but so much of Catra's psychology is based on the belief "Love is finite." It was ingrained into her brain by Shadow Weaver, who, in Catra's eyes, gave all her love to Adora. Here we see Catra thinking that Adora befriending other people means she isn't Catra's friend anymore. In season 1 when Adora tries to persuade Catra into joining the rebellion, Catra realizes Adora _left_ her and the horde for the princesses. She made new friends, she chose them over Catra. And even if Catra goes with Adora, it wouldn't matter. If she's chosen other people, she can't _also_ choose Catra. In her mind love is finite, so it doesn't work that way. Fast forward to season 5 when people around her, despite everything she's done, forgive her. The best friends squad takes her in, and she begins to heal. No, love isn't finite, and it's never as black and white as "You can only choose one side, and people who belong to that side." It's much more complex. God I love this show.

I believe the reason that the multiple attempts to wipe Hordak clean and make him back into a blank slate are failing is at least partly because of the 'defect' that originally got him cast out. Hordak likely assumed it was just his physical deterioration and need for assistance, but it was his free will and capacity to override Horde Prime's command that made Prime cast him out. He can't stand that which he cannot control. It's also likely that Horde Prime's methods aren't as 100% effective as he likes to believe and he relied overly on sheer worship, sheltering and conditioning via pain with the baptisms to keep them in line. If the clone in question cares about something strongly enough, it can guide them away from him. In Hordak's case, he remembered Catra, and now that he's been baptized, Entrapta would be the thing to break him out of that compliance. I love his character so much. This show has such great characters

I didn’t notice that she had said sorry before! lol Sometimes I wonder if another reason Catra was so attached to Adora is because Adora was the reason she was alive. Like you said, Shadow Weaver would tell Catra that the only reason she kept her around was because Adora was so attached to her. So any indication that Adora no longer was that close to her, or if she found alternative friends that Weaver could use to manipulate her, Catra would become afraid that Shadow Weaver would get rid of her once and for all. Can’t imagine dealing with those threats and physical abuse at such a young age. Like if the environment they grew up in wasn’t hard enough.

Yesss but nowhere near the same meaning as over here though! That's a wonderfully eerie thought, I think Catra's fate without Adora around might have been even darker and she might have struggled with finding a true purpose.

@@darquidarqui it’s tough to say. one on the hand, I think catra would’ve had trouble making friends; on the other, shadow weaver wouldn’t have really cared about catra. so maybe catra wouldn’t have been abused and could’ve climbed up the ranks more easily without adora (which explains catra’s thought process throughout the show)

I thnk the green force field is supposed to protect her. But from what I've read about the actual space program, being spaced for ~30sec would be survivable as long as she didn't hold her breath (the pressure differential would injure her lungs)

Entrapta is best girl. This episode was painfull to wach. 10:21 It creep me the F**k out, i had to pause for a few seconds before i was able to keep going. 18:28 i guess, though whit how fast they get her in the ship she would have made it even whitout the protection. 26:35 i was on and off shiping them trough the entire show, but this episode completly solidify catradora in my mind.

Catra: "So my last act before almost certainly getting killed by Horde Prime is either saving Adora or condemning Glimmer to an agonising death in the crushing vacuum of space.... win win!" Talking of a quick note on Catra, I never took it as her wanting Adora all to herself. That's kinda just a side effect from not wanting to open *herself* up to anyone else as she sees that as making herself vulnerable. Why does Catra work so hard to climb the ranks of the Horde? Not for power itself or even to win, not really. For her power is the only way to be safe knowing that those above her will torture her for any mistake, real or not (even if she's just a kitten and it's her adoptive mother hurting her). Feeds into the symbolism of light and dark we see here, Catra instinctively chooses the dark because when she's alone, when she's not seen... then she's safe. Oh and while I think about it, something I say a lot when it comes to She-Ra... how the hell did this show not win all the voice acting awards? This episode alone should have got AJ an entire bookcase full of shiny things. Will you cry? Let's be honest, if there was a way to do so without spoilers I'm fairly sure those of us that are on our *mumblemubmle* rewatch can likely predict when that'll happen down to the exact line...

Mmm I see what you're saying but possession is a big part of Catra's fundamental flaw, and I disagree: she GENUINELY wants Adora for herself and that keeps her from making any true connections with anyone else, and having Adora by her side, is essentially what makes her feel safe. And that quest for power you mention is entirely destroyed by the end of season four, it's the great lie that she has believed this whole time Adora has been apart. The promise that Adora made to Catra when they were kids was a symbol of lovebut also possession, cuz you gotta consider Shadow Weaver's effect on Catra, which I feel you completely disregarded, with all respect: SW is obsessed with Adora and, in the eyes of Catra, has shown "love" to Adora and not her. Catra is a child that has grown to believe that Adora would be the only one there for her. She wants to be Adora's first and ONLY choice. Shadow Weaver is a tremendous element in the thought process of Catra. Of course opening herself to Adora is important, but we're talking about the Corridors episode. I've seen now the entire fifth season and you can't really just regard what I talked about as a "side effect", that would mean criminally minimizing Catra's thought process and behavior, one that I TRULY see myself in when thinking about my past, and many other people as well I believe. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
