With spade bits or any other kind of bit I have found you can drill with confidence that they won't tear out if you clamp a piece of scrap wood over the hole before you drill. After you have it clamped you can do your layout as if the scrap is part of the piece you are drilling. Having the scrap back up the wood fibers you want to look clean works really well, laser-like in fact. I do this any time I am drilling a hole bigger than about 1/4" where it will show. It works on the leading or trailing side of the hole or both at the same time. I'm really enjoying this project thanks for showing us.

wranglerstar Hey Cody, I've been binge watching your poor man's carpenter's bench series - AWESOME stuff! I've really enjoyed and learned a lot, thanks. Just wanted to give back a little tid-bit I have from years of glueing/laminating; if you take an old putty knife (I have several sizes I use depending on the project) and just cut out 1/16" grooves every 1/8" or so on the tip you can use that to spread out your glue. Just wipe it off with a damp rag after you use it - but, even if you don't, you can take one of your old 'big box' chisels and knock off the glue. This tool will last you a lifetime - and keeps your fingers and pants clean ;) ...I cut my grooves on the edge of a belt sander, but I'm sure there's 1000 other ways to do it.

I'm tickled that you're so tickled about your new bench. Mine is a 36 inch door slab thrown on a couple of draftsman's cabinets and I'm satisfied. Those tenons show your craftsmanship so I think it's nice to see them. Perhaps a dozen people have told you this, but I'm not gonna read all 200 plus comments to find out, but I use a lot of prepaid debit cards and I use them like a squeegee to smooth out my glue for a nice even coat. Good job man!

So there I was, staying up late to watch an episode of the wranglerstar workbench saga. I curled up on the couch with the dog, opened the laptop, the familiar notes of the opening guitar ditty skating through my ear canals smoothly like an ice skater gliding across the rink. The now familiar wranglerstar voice pops up, excitement of the wedge locks mounts, and then it HAPPENS @ 1:24! -- My Spidey sense tingles, my 6th sense that something is awry, amiss, off. What is it? The dog perks up and looks at me, he feels a new energy from me -- and then I figure out the disturbance in force.... no suspenders! Where are the suspenders? Noooo!! The suspenders have been forsaken! What's a wranglerstar video without suspenders? Do his powers not derive from the suspenders?

Two things, 1) when you glued the table top slab to the apron, the glue will seep out and glue the whole thing to the "bearers", it will make it hard to disassemble. Using wax on the bearers will prevent the glue from sticking. 2) As others have said, the hinge will hit the bottom of table top slab before releasing the wedge, just make a really short hinge system, it will allow it hinge up and release the wedge for one thing, the other is; it will put the screw that holds the hinge closer to the wedge and give it more strength. Where the screw is on the hinge now is very weak, the hinge will split at the screw if the wedge ever gets hit inward from the bottom. I've been doing woodworking for 20 years, I have glues miles of panels, cabinets, beams, etc.. I have learned the hard way! Also, another tip: when gluing panels and beams - the steel bar clamps will leave a metal rust stain in the wood where the glue joints are, you can sand them out most of the time, but in softer wood it can soak in a good 1/4" deep. Put some wax paper between the metal on the bar clamp and the wood to prevent this. You can also wax the metal bar with paste wax to keep it from rusting while the glue dries.

Hello Cody ! About the glue, just be careful, if your don't re-machine your wood once it's glued and wipe it with a wet cloth, it will open the wood pores and let the glue in the wood. When this happen, you can't make it disappear through the finish. Just let it dry without touching it and brake it with a scraper or a large chisel once it's dry. Also, you are having difficulties with your wood because it's construction wood dried to 25-30 percent. You need to let this dry at least 10-12 months to be used as stable woodworking wood.

JCrook1028 I know, and I have. I've been a fan of PS for years. But I've always doubted the bench design--it just seems to go contrary to the way I use a bench. I am considering making it but also building a leaf-insert to cover the trough when I need a large, flat surface.

Zerkbern If you want to make a trough-cover, you should make a rabbet in the tops to set it in, and maybe put ribs on the bottom of it to stiffen it up. Then you can cover it without completely clearing the trough.

Hi Cody you are doing a great job on the bench! Just a note you may want to consider. Are the wedge locks going to be fouled by the underside of the bench if you need to take it apart. If you are going to glue the bench top to the skirt, wont there be a clearance issue with the pivot/ hickory retainer for the wedge holding the skirt in place? As you mentioned other commenting on your glue-ups, I have one minor...suggestion? But take it as you will, you are far more experienced than myself. However, going back to your initial top glue-up, and this apron one as well, do you think cauls may have helped to distribute the clamping pressure more evenly? Also, as for the top glue-up...was there a reason you didn't do them in sub-assemblies? Would that maybe have helped in reducing the gaps you experienced? I've thoroughly enjoyed the series, and am anxious to see the final product! Taylor
@bascostbudde7614
@bascostbudde7614 10 жыл бұрын
I just did a top of 8 pieces in two assemblies, and found straightening the two four-pieces quite a strain. I would not recommend that now. Cauls perpendicular to the laminated pieces on the other hand is working well for me. You have to have a good dry run before, that's for sure.

The lumber you selected is green doug fir and that is pron to checking. There is kiln dried doug fir (which they call premium doug fir) for a very reasonable price at Home Depot an Lowe's. That would of prevented the checking. The deck of you work bench will shrink in width as it dries. If you lag the deck to the "bearers" below you may have a cross grain situation that might cause damage if they are fastened together.

@bascostbudde7614

They don't. Although the bolt restricts lateral movement of the apron relative to the leg, it doesn't stop such movement altogether. And when it moves, the apron fibres compress, and the wedge drops.

@imanoleonardo6902
@imanoleonardo6902 10 жыл бұрын
Ron I was thinking about what he said and he may be right, the sides/apron of the bench rest in pocket/dado, the top probably will not move down much if any, the only movement I can think of is the lateral - side to side movement. the bolt acts like a pivot point which the wedge would fall making the joint tighter as it rocked. Just my thoughts

IMaNO Leonardo The apron cannot drop of course, but it will be tempted to move laterally, together with the top, when I plane for instance. The leg will try to rotate under that movement. My bench isn't old enough to show wear on the dado yet, so I've nothing to "prove" that on. It doesn't feel like it's rocking, honestly; but we know, over time a drop of water will cut a rock.
