Yes, always in my tackle bag. Was actually introduced to this technique on a west whidbey beach fishing for coho w/ herring. Often run with the diver & hoochie/spin n glow/bait during skagit sockeye season. (more interesting than plunking :) ). Thanks for showing the float w/ diver combo - haven't fished spinners with it because I couldn't figure that piece out.

Been running the hit shot planer about every couple days for a year now sometimes it's hard to get it out there from shore with a plug and the water flow has to be perfect for me to fish it correctly I have tried diver and a spin glow with eggs behind it um I have alot of info would love to hear some of yours thx
@HolyMolyOutdoors2 күн бұрын
@@JeffStorm-timberfaller thanks for watching and sharing! I have found that not all water will work that is for sure. I’ve played with a 3-4’ leader with eggs and a spin n glow behind a diver and set about 40’ ish ft back on a head of a run. Was able to get 1 coho and a trout but had to keep it for getting pushed with the current out of the seam. I haven’t given it the time I should over the years and was kind of what sparked the video to be done again. I love that plug grab haha. Let me know if you want me to share more on the diver set up I’ve tried

@HolyMolyOutdoors yes always I value your knowledge and understanding and willingness to help people and share it is cool to know there are good people in the community enough of that it's awesome to be able to run a plug across the river and fish it in the slot 3 months ago I was on the lewis and had a Chinook tear a storm wiggle wart apart he hit it and went to the moon he broke me off but it was killer anyway talk to u later I will show u some of my setups again thx

The first time i saw someone catch a steeelie on a side-planer, it was right above tide on the Hoh River, and it was a 19 pound hen! I bought one and caught a couple of fish on it. No great skates, but 2 fish are 2 fish! What it did do was sgow me i could plug fish from the bank. I catch steelhead every year dropping plugs from the bank. Im always looking for a high bank situation or other spot that will allow me to send a plug back along a cliff or other area. My favorite all-time plug is a Wiggle Wart, silver, with a black back stripe. I broke my planer by not breaking it down when it was in my vest. It definately opens up tons of water you can back a plug down.

I saw your video last year on planers and loved it! I bought both style planers to try. I really liked the sidewinder better with your modification. Started training on my home rivers in MA to get ready for fall steelhead season in upstate NY. Worked great in the smaller rivers in MA. Middle of November I headed up for a weeks long fishing trip to the Oswego and Salmon Rivers. For some reason on the bigger Oswego river with a moderate to fast flow, I could not get the sidewinder out to the middle of the river. It would just stall, and not really move. Now I made the decision to run 30 pound braid line with a 12Lb fluro leader. Not sure if the braid screwed things up for me or not with the faster flow happening. Would braid cause issues like that?? When I fished the slower flow salmon river, it worked better and I ended up landing two nice 12LB steelhead on hot shots. Let me know what you think and thanks for the great videos!!
@HolyMolyOutdoors2 күн бұрын
@@denisehulette5935 that is so awesome! Thank you for the support and watching! So neat to hear of the success, great job! There could be a couple things, braid could play a part yes but I am more interested in the line angle. Was the board slightly down stream with tension to pull the board out? I have encountered if it is too straight on it can cause it to no go out as easy. The surface current can affect too if boulder cause the boil or swirls on the water it’s harder to get the same tension. Hard to say without fully seeing it though. Thanks again!

Can you run the side planner very well with a spinning set up instead of a bait caster
@HolyMolyOutdoors2 күн бұрын
@@jonwhiteley5651 it’s possible yes, practical not so much. The bait caster allows far better control letting the line out and positioning. Not to say it can’t be done though on spinning gear. If that may be all you have, it can work. Thank you for watching!
@jonwhiteley56512 күн бұрын
@ I do have a big caster. I was just trying to eliminate on how many rods I need to carry with me. Lol.
@HolyMolyOutdoors2 күн бұрын
@ haha! That I can relate to big time! But I can say having more of a universal baitcasting setup can kill two bird with one stone. Maybe a spoon/spinner than can be quickly swapped out for the planer rig.
@joepodunk284Күн бұрын
Try to loosen your drag up until it pulls out, or strip line to help it, instead of flipping the bail. Then tighten back up the drag!
@jonwhiteley5651Күн бұрын
@ thank you that’s a great idea. I will have to try that. I don’t have a side planner yet, but I will have to put that on my list. I don’t dare show that list to my wife though. Lol. 😆

I've been using side planers over 30 years. They are great. But in no way do they replace a boat. After all the boat can transport you down river to spots where the planer can't get to without trespassing on private property. But the planer is a great tool. Have a great day. I'm wondering if we will see snow this weekend or beginning of next week. Everyone dress warmly and stay close to your propane heater 😂. Tight lines.

@HolyMolyOutdoors i actually bring my side planers in my boat also. Sometimes because of over hanging trees you can use the planer in the fishy water where your boat can't go. Also if the water is getting pounded by other boats going over the fish using the planer can't get your offerings into the fishy water but keep the boat to the side helping to spook the fish less.Fyi, only about 1 month till I start hitting the Columbia for early springers. I have missed the last 2 or 3 seasons because of health problems. I believe ill be good enough this year. Fingers crossed 🤞.
