Poor Man's Fiberglass vs Frugal Man's Fiberglass on the SUP

Thanks useful comparison. The wear issue was a bit of surprise as I expected FMF to be better. But I guess the cheaper epoxies are just more fragile.

Thanks for the comment - I think that the epoxy was less durable because the lamination was so thin, Cheaper epoxy probably contributed to the bubbles, I would guess.

Thx for making this! I was looking into PMF, and noted that it didn't seem too much cheaper than FMF. For what I'm thinking of doing (teardrop) it sounds like PMF is the way to go in any case!

I agree. PMF is a great process, but has its limitations. But I would definitely use it on a teardrop if I was making one with what I know now. Thanks for the comment

In the "riggeden" isn't the comparison also impacted that the Frugal Man's fiberglass having a more complete stringer? while the first board PMF, has an inserted rib that after you cut with the angle grinder might only be 1" in vertical height at the middle section

Good thought, and probably a contributing factor, but the poor man's fiberglass still gives a softer shell, and even at the edges of the board, you can feel the differences underfoot.

Does anyone know, If its possible for you to use conventional fiberglass on top of pmf, or fmf? Say you wanted to upgrade without completely having to rebuild the piece.

I couldn't say for sure, but if you did, you would probably need to use epoxy for the first few layers just to get good adhesion. In my experience, conventional fiberglass isn't an upgrade if you are just looking for a barrier layer. Thanks for the comment!

Drill 2 holes (small) in blisters, Inject epoxy into the highest hole until filled. Clamp flat if possible.

Rout 2 stiringer 1thurd x1thurd and that will stiff in it up

Thanks for the comment, but I'm referring to the stiffness of the cover, rather than the stiffness of the board overall.

I wonder if Canvas and epoxy would make sense. Canvas is essentially "poor man's carbon fiber" and you'd get the rigidity of epoxy.

Maybe so. I'm not so sure that the epoxy is so rigid over a large area, but that may be something interesting to try. Thanks for the suggestion

What I'm gonna try to do. Got an Intex Excursion I'm gonna turn into a fishing boat. Floor mod is first and I found a big polyester tapestry cheap. Going to do foam floor instead of plywood, and use epoxy resin.
