Dr. Walker earned his degree in neuroscience from Nottingham University, UK, and his PhD in neurophysiology from the Medical Research Council, London, UK. He later became a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, USA. Currently, he is Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. He is also the founder and director of the Center for Human Sleep Science.
Dr. Walker’s research examines the impact of sleep on human health and disease. He has received numerous funding awards from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, and is a Kavli Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Walker is the author of the International Bestseller, Why We Sleep. It has a singular goal: to reunite humanity with sleep. The book provides a complete description of, and prescription for, sleep. It answers critical questions about sleep: how do caffeine and alcohol affect sleep? What really happens during dreaming? Why do our sleep patterns change across a lifetime? How do common sleep pills affect us and can they do long-term damage?

43:30 Lewis, this happened to me for a period of time almost every night. Try to relax and go back to sleep, don't fight it or try to move. Then you wake up as normal.

@@EveryEdits7 I guess it knocks your body out of rhythm, so you wake up when both sleep phases are not yet complete or in sync as usual. My partner moved to a different timezone and would call me when he finished work, which for me was 2am. We would talk for around half hour then I'd go back to sleep. I'd hear a big whoosh sound like a train was speeding towards me or I was surrounded by blue electric. After a few nights I researched it. It's known as sleep paralysis. There's lots of scary stories about monsters and beings in the room on the internet. I chose to believe the scientific stuff I found that said "you're not fully awake yet" The next nights it happened, I relaxed, instead of trying to wake I reminded myself of what was going on and tried to go back to sleep and it worked. I had I dream l will never forget. At 43, I dreamt I had a baby girl. The next week I had to go to the dr. She was about to write me a prescription when I remembered my dream. Asked her if this medicine would hurt an unborn child. She said yes, and tested me. I was pregnant so she gave me a diff drug. Had a baby girl! Listen to your dreams.

When I was in my early 20s i was physically in good shape (I had abbs). I had a dream once that I had a big pregnant looking beer belly. Over the next few years I developed a beer gut and looked just like it did in the dream! I quit drinking and began excorcising and I did lose about ten pounds but still have a bit of a gut. I wish I'd have listened to the dream and quit drinking earlier. Now I know!

It might also just be metabolic, I was over exercising, under eating and not getting enough carbs which resulted in several nutritional deficiencies after 6 years etc (thought I was being healthy, felt great in the initial years) unknowingly I was putting my body in a catabolic state which will cause the body to stay awake and alert, as it is meant to. Think about what you are doing and what messages you are sending to your central nervous system via the way you eat exercise and live...you might be putting your body in survival mode and its simply doing what its meant to be doing. I cut back and changed the way I exercise opting for more anabolic promoting activities with ample recovery time, ate more frequent balanced meals and also allowed myself to take naps. It has taken a long time for my body to balance out and recover, I now don't even need to bother with or think about sleep hygiene, I get tired and sleep. I hope this helps someone in a similar predicament, the worst part is not knowing what is happening and how to recover.

My dog sleeps on the bed every night. He zonks out til morning. With my ex, I was sleep deprived for years: snoring, waking up throughout the night, loud alarm earlier than I needed to wake up. I fell asleep at work once in front of a client. It was awful. We split up for other reasons, but I’m sure sleep deprivation factored in via resentment. He was also against sleeping in different rooms. “We’re a couple. We’re supposed to sleep together.” Omg.

As far as I can remember I have always hated to go to bed and Go to sleep. One time my parents went to Vegas for the weekend and I stayed up all 3 days they were gone. Just reading and having fun with my 5 sisters. When they slept, I read. I sleep 4-5 hours a night. I don't get sleepy, never. I force myself to go to sleep. I'm now 65 and nothing has changed. I'm in perfect health, no high B. P., No high cholesterol, in fact my HDL is high, never had cavity, not diabetic, I don't have 1 grey hair. My only ailment is arthritis. I've had severe arthritis since I was 25. Doctor said I would be in a wheelchair by 50yrs. I said, "I will never be in a wheelchair". I am 100 yrs. away from needing one right now. I consider myself pretty lucky. Still only getting 4-5hrs. of sleep a day. Sometimes I'll take 1/2 sleeping pill to sleep. Sometimes I'll eat before going to bed because going to bed on a full stomach makes me want to go to sleep. And during my day I'm very mindful to do a lot of moving so to tire myself out so that I may sleep that night. Even seeing people sleeping bothers me. I know these are all unhealthy things to help me sleep, but it's what I do in order to sleep my 4-5. I've never had a hard time waking up, I pop right up, always excited because now my whole family will be up with me. Can Some one tell me how, why?

I spent at least three decades enduring minimal sleep due to having to share a bed with someone who has sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. As soon as we were able to buy a house with an extra bedroom I moved to my own room. It caused near panic among some of my friends and family who were certain our marriage was ending. We are still together and going strong twenty years on! I wish society would accept the need for sleep and take it seriously and not keep insisting that couples need to share a bed (during sleep) to have a healthy life together.

Couples shouldnt sleep together, it is pointless closeness and desensitizes your energy to the other person (depolarization). If you want to keep that zing and spark in a relationship, sleep in separate bedrooms and ignore all the whispers from others if they hear about it.

I have to have my room cool to be able to sleep good, and I have to sleep in my birthday suit. And I notice having good quality sheets help too! Don't eat a heavy meal too close to bed time. I always try to think about things I would like to dream about or problems I would like to solve. So maybe I might find the answers in my dreams? I have Cancer rising, in my chart, so my room has to make me feel good and relaxed with art, plants, nice lighting, rugs, humidifier in the winter time, and a air cleaner. Most important, go to bed happy, with plans for tomorrow!

Omg! Lewis, get off all your shows follow you on all platforms, tried to watch as much videos as possible, single mom, entrepreneur, trying to get better at everything.... That's what one thing I know I'm lacking is sleep at 5:30 in the morning and I'm watching videos, last November I didn't sleep for 6 days in a row. And go to bed everyday around 5:00 in the morning until 8:00 or 9:00.....need to clean my act! Love you and what you are doing so much. Going for the 100 million a week! Hello! I realize that I am watching this a year after the interview, but I have recently subscribed to your channel since I have a hard time falling asleep. I remember that I had a dream once, and the following morning, the exact same thing happened!!!! It was crazy! The real outcome of the situation was different though because I was so shocked that I ran away... I like watching your interviews! Thanks! A fan from Paraguay, South America!🙂

I tried to sleep again coz i felt so sleepy. But I can still control the dream that I want to happen. I made it continued the way I wanted. I know I was half awake but I can dream at the same time. Wonderful...

I share your pain. I find if I prop my legs up and put a stuffed animal behind my neck... so my body is cradled... I sleep way better. There's nothin worse than peeling yourself off the mattress after an two hours of sleeping on your side, feeling like you've been run over by a semi-truck. Peep's can't seem to understand how detrimental the added stress off worrying about not having a good nights rest affects your ability to function let alone be a reliable individual Oh yeah... I forgot to mention the violent dreams of being attacked by spiders and snakes! ..lol I find sleep meditation music geared for what ails you to be a huge blessing... Jason Stephenson and John Moyer are just two. Feel free to reach out ... there's not enough support groups out there.
