We were so completely blown away by "Poor Things" that we wanted to review it for you as early as possible. Christy and Alonso absolutely loved the movie and rave about it in this spoiler-free review. The latest from daring Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos is a truly inspired steampunk spectacle about a young woman's journey of self-discovery. Written by Tony McNamara, who also wrote Lanthimos' "The Favourite," based on the novel by Alasdair Gray. Starring Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael and Hanna Schygulla. In limited release Dec. 8, opens wider in the following weeks.

Totally wacko experience! All i had going into this was the awards the film won and was nominated for and that the so-called 'buzz' was strong, with just a scintilla of plot. Wasn't prepared for the concept and the direction the film takes. It's the Frankenstein story where turnabout's fair play. A bizarre vision totally realized but made credible and accessible. The icky medical aspects recalls David Cronenberg's "Crimes of the Future" but the satirical oddball tone makes this story more engaging with a heroine that manages in unlikely fashion to find herself. Costuming, set design, CGI urban landscapes are all eye-popping. Emma Stone gives an inspired performance with solid support from twisted Willem Dafoe and daffy Mark Ruffalo. And yes, hard to describe!

But in terms of the “design” in production design, I think Poor Things is unbeatable, it’s a fully realized and coherent world spanning multiple countries and sets all with their own identities. Barbie is of course amazing, but it has less original design than Poor Things.

This is probably my favorite movie of the year. It's presented in a way that makes you think the world is being filtered through a funhouse mirror, but in reality the looking glass is undistorted and the warped sensation you're experiencing is the one humans have created. Incredible filmmaking.

Love this review! I’ll watch pro-Poor Things reviews all day until I can see the movie again :) I loved every shot and from the first one, with the blue dress, with those hard pleated sleeves - I knew this was going to be special. And then returning to that home of Victoria (was her name?) and seeing the coats of armor and that prison vibe - just one of so so so many thrills and since you mentioned you like the costume design I wanted to share that reflection - thank you :)

This couldn’t have been better-put in my opinion! I found the similar joy I got from the movie just watching the two of you talk about loving it for the same reasons. My partner and I saw it on NYE, empty theater - and barely spoke until the ride home we were so mutually overcome with what we had seen and couldn’t describe. I was on the brink of tears for the entire third act (and, honestly, many times before - Bella listening to the musician on the balcony amidst the story that had already unfolded, with those stunning visuals… I was gripped and undone). We had no idea what we were getting into, and I kept finding myself mouth-open in amazement giving in to the story and experience. I already knew going in to the third act that it was one of the best and most surprisingly moving movies I’d ever seen. My description landed on - a beautiful, euphoric, absurd, sexual, haunting, and personally moving dream (the ones you rarely remember and ache from how profound it was and how you can’t share that universe or experience with others), but a real experience you can revisit. We were so talked-out after an hour-plus trying to put it into words, I finally broke down and had to cry at how this thing had moved me so much. 10/10 in this house, too. 🥹🩵 Sending all the best to you both!

The capsule review: Mr. Lanthimos's take on Mr. Gray's book dazzles & disturbs. Ms. Stone furiously jumps into Iconic Territory. Admired more than loved; still, it's Something Else Again. And though both novel & film have male-gaze aspects and ethical quandaries that I seriously question, it's a genuinely vivid, original experience -- Terry Gilliam meets Ken Russell on Kenneth Anger's dime ---all 3 main male actors are expert, especially Mr. Youssef, Ms. Hunter and HANNA SCHYGULLA! are particularly choice, and La Belle Emma enters Moreau or Huppert or Redgrave realms of Absolute Artistry. Am very glad to have seen it.. Thanks as always, Christy and Alonso.

I've been a fan of Emma Stone since her early Superbad days and I can see her winning a second Oscar for this. Saw it last night and WOW. I definitely went in with unfairly high expectations and I was still blown away almost constantly. Emma Stone is extraordinary, and I was also thrilled with all of the performances around her. The world created here feels like something out of a fantasy videogame or a dream state. I don't know how any of this was accomplished and I'm obsessed with it. Yes, and I can barely find any reviews online about it. Eugenio derbez is phenomenal and should be a part of award conversations. In some ways it’s a paint by number “inspirational teacher” trope but it is also deeply moving and touches on many issues not depicted very often. It’s definitely worth watching

I know lists are arbitrary and mean nothing but I just got home from this and I think this might be the first time I agree with both of you for the best film of the year. I just haven’t seen anything like this in all of 2023, something this ambitious and this thematically daring that really makes good on every promise made early on. It’s rare I have read so much about a movie and still had it genuinely shock and surprise me many times throughout. This was one of my most anticipated films of the year and I knew more about it going in than I would’ve liked. But this film threw me for a loop in every single way. Truly the best movie of the year

Hi, I saw it last week and it was really remarkably crafted, directed, and greatly performed by Emma Stone. The script was brilliant and it was a stunning visual experience, but I found it too exhausting at the end. For instance, the act in Paris was too redundant and obvious, I almost disconnected until the last act started. I definitely admired it but If I had the opportunity I would not see it again, the more I think about the less I like it. Maybe I was expecting something more subtle and emotional, it worked but not completely !!

All props to Emma Stone, and the whole cast. It's all surprising and weird and unpredictable in the very best ways. One thing that caught me totally by surprise was what I guess you could call the third act, when Christopher Abbot's character enters the story. I had no real sense of time while watching the movie, but I thought it was just about over when suddenly he came along. Then there is a whole big elaborate section with him, and it elevated Emma Stone's "Bella" and the whole movie even more! I was already totally satisfied, and then it got even stronger and emotional. Stellar film. Easily my favorite Lanthimos film .

As someone who is not exactly a Yorgos stan -- I admire and applaud, yet am also always aware of the directorial hand in ways that don't always hit my solar plexus, it's ALL so subjective -- and who entirely respected the source material without losing their mind over it, I have to say, you two have sold me. Was always going to see it, but now, I simply MUST. Any fillum that can get a "Breaking The Waves" reference or Hanna Schygulla shout out is automatically ahead of the curve, and we've been waiting for Ms. Stone to hit that next level,of artistry, which clearly she does and has. Christy & Alonso, tonight I watched "Fingernails" with Jessie Buckley and Liz Ahmed. I was completely charmed and thought the central performances were sublime. Would love to hear you 2 on this quirky romance. The weirdness reminds me of Yorgos Lanthimos. People will need to suspend their critical faculties about the central premise :)

I saw parallels to Barbie in its immaculate production design (and doll-like fish out of water protagonist). I’m not sold on Lathimos being a genius. Continuing our exchange from The Zone of Interest, this film and American Fiction are perfect examples of films that do it the right way and have total clarity. We understand everything, and so we can actually judge the material. You both seem to love Poor Things, and Alonso seems to have loved American Fiction. I don't want to use the word ambiguous because films can have ambiguity and still have clarity. In other words, we understand something is meant to be ambiguous. Confusion and ambiguity are two different things. Films like TZI and Power of the Dog are confusing because they leave out details, especially regarding characters. For half the movie, I had no idea who anyone was in Power of the Dog. There's simply nothing brilliant about omitting information about characters so we're confused. In Poor Things, everything is laid out with complete clarity. There is never any confusion. We understand it, and we can decide whether it's brilliant or not. What I'm saying is that critics/award committees need to stop rewarding superficial/artificial brilliance and actually reward real brilliance.

I said it with Rachel senott and Emma seligman I’ll say it with my boy YORGOS and Emma stone and same thing with deniro and Scorsese… I NEVER WANNA SEE A LANTHIMOS FILM WITHOUT EMMA STONE!! usually when mainstream actresses or actors go indie or wierd it can be cringe like Brendan Fraiser the whale but here where an actress and director know EXACTLY how to play it and have COMPLETE TRUST in each other…. THTAS filmmaking

Poor Things was good, but a bit weird. The sex was a bit much, but brief so I was ok with it. This or The Holdovers should win best picture. Overall, the last two years have not been great Oscars wise. CODA was the last great Oscar year.
