With these shapes delivering what language is necessary to deliver to your audience. The four shapes I learned are the spherical, the cubical, the conical, and the cylindrical, and each shape can come in many different forms. AniMat doesn’t understand what makes good character designs. What makes a good design are three things: shape language, color palette, and unique silhouettes, and the central characters from the movie have great designs. Each have their own color, shape, and silhouette that makes each of them stand out from one another along with over exaggeration that emphasizes who these characters are. What Mat said at 17:57 doesn’t make sense because realism and stylization clash with one another. Either go for realism in the animation or something unique, and some of the best animated films choose the latter because that’s the point and wonder of animation! Is he implying that The Lion King 2019 looks better than The Triplets of Belleville cause looks more realistic than the other? Besides, his avatar that he drew has an incredibly boring silhouette that could be mistaken for any other cartoon character which fails in what makes a great design.

One of my biggest gripes with Animat is how he's one of those critics who complains about certain elements whenever a film he doesn't like features them but then as soon as a film he likes does the exact same thing, he either praises those elements or ignores them, like it's only bad when a select few films do it. He's gotten better at this in recent years. He's even started acknowledging when films he doesn't like have legitimate attempts at character growth, unlike here where he bases his thoughts on each character purely off of how they act at the beginning of the film while completely ignoring their development, but he still shows that bias every so often.

@rosennacht7624 Yeah, like, even though I don't think the art style in Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 1 and 2 is AS bad as AniMat says it is, I kinda see where he is coming from and how the style works better in 2D. Plus, a lot of the characters looking like they just drank gallons of coffee in how many of them constantly flail their arms and such and just the cgi trying to match 2d in that way, I can see where that could be off at times at least. Personally myself, I also don't consider the story and characters in these movies to be as great as some say it is, either. It's not terrible but the first one is rather your typical fish out of water or outcast tries to make his dream come true story. There is a funny joke every now and then, though. @henrynelson9301 OK, I meant realistic looking cgi texturing and just general looks ignoring how stylized the designs look. Kinda similar to many Pixar films but with obviously a different style and trying to look 2d without even cel shading or stuff like that. That may be something for its time somewhat, but that doesn't mean it's great. I can kinda see the whole angle of trying to be very stylistic with something very realistic being a bit off because the two don't exactly go together. Either be more realistic or more stylistic. You know what I mean? At least in how the movie did in, in comparison to others that look better due to the style or something else like Hotel Transylvania, whose character designs looked different and, in my opinion, a bit better than in Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.

It should be noted that Sony Pictures Animation never moved to Vancouver as it was Sony Pictures Imageworks who moved to Vancouver. Imageworks is the one who do the animated visual effects for the live action movies for Sony and other studios. So AniMat never did his research and assumed that Sony Animation moved to Vancouver when it was Imageworks that moved. Also him saying Sony Animation should shut down during his Emoji Movie review is actually disrespectful as hundreds of animators would lose their jobs and it’s hard for them to find a replacement job in the animation industry in Hollywood, it’s not easy going from one studio to another. AniMat clearly doesn’t understand the consequences that would happen if that was the case of Sony Animation shutting down just because of a bad movie they made.
