If you had a business in Japan pre 2000, you were involved with the Yakuza in some way. It was a fact of life, even if it was just protection money or a small investment. Nowadays it's not so bad since theres a pretty big crackdown on Yakuza operations but it's still somewhat common even if it's way more discreet.
