I find this topic really interesting because I was raised in a Bhaca community (by my Mother) though my father is Mpondo. I went to school and fell in love with Poetry. I write poems both in Xhosa and English. When I got to varsity I fell in love with Hip-Hop particularly South African Hip-Hop. I later fell in love with Hip-Hop beats to a point where I started writing on them. I gave myself a rap name and still consider myself a 'Rapper'. But I've always had and still have this problem of not knowing how to sound and I find myself not recording my songs because I feel like I'll misrepresent my poetry and convey it in a twisted way. I do not know whether I am Bhaca or Mpondo. Dope topic guys. I might not make sense but that is exactly what you should get from this message [CONFUSION] CZ that's a reflection of how I feel. I love you guys. I'm in JHB (Newtown).

I think in South Africa there's a disconnect. The older rappers are versatile and can flip however if you look at the younger kids they are not they can't flip language on a whim. I think its an attribute that they have consumed too much American content. It also goes deeper to the fact that some know their home language on a surface level. One thing that I have noticed and is very prevalent in Johannesburg is that children are raised to speak English first before their home language. This will create a domino effect for the next generation of creatives. And it will genuinely create an even larger disconnect. Cause at the end of it. If a person does not know or identify with their roots how can they be grounded and express themselves...the only option they can grab on with both hands is English.

My thing is do you really have to rap in vernac in order to appeal to the global market? Hip Hop is a genre that is borrowed and didn't originate in South Africa. Whether we like it or not, we follow the west as a blueprint to make this music. Nasty C is Zulu and can speak his language very well, but he did not start rapping in Zulu. He started rapping in English because that was the blueprint set out for him. How was Stogie T able to successfully tour Europe with his band and all he did was rap in English. Afro beats has appeal because it's music that formulated in Africa. I also feel like you could still appeal to the global scene while rapping through your story telling and overall sound/production.
@mongesibmahlangu27235 жыл бұрын
@Pinkys rose : Scoop had mentioned that the global audience notices you for what makes you unique and not what they already have,so the "repping where you from" conversation is one example of that which makes you unique. Another example is style, so when we talk about stogie, what made successful was his unique style of having "the volume" implement jazz/soulful sound to his raps

SCOOP and Dj Vigilante get it! ask any African in the diaspora what they spend most of their time doing in a social setting with other people you would often find them explaining where they come from, the type of food they eat, the music they listen to, often not too sure how to answer these questions. and I think from these questions u begin to realise something about themselves that they have probably lived most of their lives as a secondary citizen to their own tribe. The Indians, Chinese, Nepalese, Sri Lankens will tell u without a doubt what they eat and drink and what they wear on certain occasions. they wear their culture and pride unapologetically. You guys are right, the Nigerians, I would best describe them as our Ambassadors when it comes to this topic of culture and pride.

I like the push on encouraging our own but after all i think we suppose to encourage artists to be true and be them selves on their projects and not to copy others because if we narrow it to a point of culture and roots, that will mean we have to consider a lot since we all have different influences. Rapping in English doesn't mean i sound like someone, i can still be myself without sounding similar to someone else while rapping in English.
@zanetshona5 жыл бұрын
Loved the topic..and yeah i agree..we don't pay attention to our talent until they are recognized else where. People are just not proud of their roots especially their language, they think speaking English is cooler and the bombastic the words the smarter you are..you should see how people are quick to correct you or laugh at you when you make a mistake in English as if speaking and knowing English is an accomplishment kodwa the same bantu abalazi ulimi lwabo

The points here are very valid, but question is...are we doing enough to make sure that the rawness of SA talent is recognized or at least giving it enough attention? Things like the "Mzansi Kwaito, House Music Awards", nobody knows about them because it''s not marketed enough, there's insufficient funding for this or celebrities are not mentioning it enough on social media, free marketing.
