what you think Popcorn were out of GST before? They just categorize them, for instance normal popcorn is 5%, Packaged factory produced are at 12% and carmalized popcorns (served mostly in Theaters) are at 18% because they are considered as sugar confectionery. If you learn or study about GST, you will find this is common phenomena to have different categories for having different tax slabs on them, this is how GST works around the globe.

Govt in india, both centre and states, suffer from being understaffed. US govt has opposite problem, there are too many unnecessary posts while many essential posts remain vacant. We need to work on how taxes are designed and defined. Its interesting to see govt is deciding taxes on individual products. Which is complex and hectic process which may create unnecessary hurdle for small businesses. Why not implement tax on production and supply when its apparent that cost of production and process is being taxed. Which ideally needs to be paid by business owner. Customers shouldn't pay more than retail price.

There is sides of pop corn, one Rs10 product is sold a Rs 300.00, so you made a simple corn to luxury product. Now government wants its share. We the people are responsible for this by being irresponsible.
@elpsykongroo8308Сағат бұрын
It is popular in India to punish the middle and upper class by taxing "luxury goods"....Instead of thinking of them as consumers who are driving the engines of economy through their spending, we think of them just as a source of revenue for the government to exploit....ironically, their increased taxes lead to decreased consumption and actually decrease the ultimate tax collections.....but politicians and bureaucrats are always more interested in wealth redistribution rather than wealth creation....because even if it's less efficient for the country, it gives them more control and power.

Modi has unfortunately failed in simplifying rules at many places. One more example is the suspicion with which this government sees OCI card holders. Its so complex to invest in india as an oci. Everyone asks for aadhar for any investment without which its extremely hard. For reasons only known to this government, aadhar is not available for oci holders. The government almost seems to have a grudge against oci card holders investing in india. Just this one simplification will bring in many billions of much needed investment

Honestly if the government tries to streamline operations and introduce good reform will it be implement or face protest and be rolled back? One easy picking is merger of PSUs for improving efficiency and transmission of capital. It will also remove a lot of redundancy and reduce salary expense, as will BSNL sale but people dont raise this. People are instead focusing on useless things like parliment canteen subsidy which is insignficant compared to much more higher expenses.

By god, SG, did you read the drastic effects a program like DOGE can have on US Economy? It is downright disaster. Living standards of Americans and safety standards of numerous industries will fall drastically. Javier's plan in Argentina is not just limited to cutting the size of the state but also very active changes in monetary policy and much more and Argentina was an extreme case to begin with. Sometimes the libertarian inside you needs to introspect before just jumping. That is in no way me supporting the government's approach or the tax regime. Terrible take. You really need to be more aware of Trump and his lunancy. Horrible.
@panzerofthelake5066 сағат бұрын
Javier's supreme policy was firing government workers and shutting down over half of the ministries. Argentina is not an extreme case at all, keynesianists say that about argentina to avoid confronting the reality about that country. Argentina was destroyed by decades of socialism/keynesian interventionism and Milei is reversing the course. And secondly SG has a pretty good grasp on economics, if you disagree then bring facts instead of insults.
@panzerofthelake5066 сағат бұрын
I personally don't think DOGE will accomplish all that much because a. Trump doesn't have enough republican seats in congress to create an actual department or push through DOGE's recommended reforms And b. Elon Musk is a snake oil salesman, he doesn't have the expertise to reform the government in any meaningful way. He may have the spirit but he lacks the understanding of how the US government works. Javier milei is a thousand times smarter than this wannabe saviour of the western world lmao
