Yes - this is real! Where did you think popcorn comes from?
Just like sweet corn, popcorn grows as ears of corn which are then harvested, shucked, dried, and then de-cobbed.
Most store-bought popcorn cobs come with a popping bag that you can microwave and then top with oil and seasoning. If your cob doesn't come with a bag for popping, just place your cob in a large brown paper bag, fold over the opening, and microwave until popped.

No staple needed. Edit: Also, the bag literally says to put it in the microwave for no more than 90 seconds. Pull it out sooner IF the popping slows down to 2-3 seconds between pops.

What makes that ear of corn different from any other? Could you not butter it before you pop it?

Great question! Popcorn is one of six varieties of corn. Sweet corn is another, a totally different plant. And if you try to butter your popcorn cob before microwaving it, the butter will burn. You can, however, lather your cob in oil beforehand because of the higher burn point. This method doesn’t result in an even coating of oil on the endosperm (white part of the popcorn) so I don’t recommend it. Thanks for watching!

The white part of the popcorn is called the endosperm and is actually liquified during the heating process. When the kernel shell ruptures, that liquid rapidly expands and cools, creating the shape we know as popcorn.
