I was a high school senior when this movie came out, and I can tell you that it viscerally captured all the sexual frustration and deep angst of impending adulthood that we teenage boys felt. Every one of us understood Joel on a profoundly deep level, but none of us would have had the balls to do any of the stuff he did. The movie was both cathartic and terrifying at the same time. A genuine classic for any guy who was a teenager in the early 1980s.

One thing about this movie that makes it so unique, other than the cast, is it’s really about a real world education vs. a classroom experience. Joel learns more about business and how it actually works in the real world from Lana than he ever could in school. I think that’s what makes this movie still relevant today.

The dance scene where Joel dances to "Old Time Rock N' Roll" was completely improvised. In the script Tom Cruise was simply instructed to "dance to rock music." Also, the sunglasses Joel wears are the Ray-Ban Wayfarer model. Annual sales of Wayfarers were languishing as of 1983 but skyrocketed 2,000 percent after the movie's release. This film and The Blues Brothers (1980) have contributed to the popularity of the Wayfarers since.

Rebecca De Mornay is not only other-worldly gorgeous in this film (and reminded me of Taylor Swift today), but she pulls off the almost impossible task of being that woman that you would throw everything away for. She comes off as whip smart and charming, without dialogue that lets you know she is either. And all the while, there's a good chance that she's lying to you. She should have won an award for this part.

Allegedly, this was originally written as a cautionary tale with an unhappy ending: He doesn't get into Princeton, he doesn't get the girl, Lana was conning him the whole time. Obviously someone was unhappy with that version, so they changed the ending, or at least tacked on a couple of new scenes (the scene with his Dad, the ending with Lana).

Cassie was stressed in scenes where she should have been laughing. There were so many classic lines where I still LOL to this day and Cassie was just worried that Joel would get into trouble. The Porsche guy saying "Who's the U-Boat commander", "Get off the babysitter Joel!", "You don't buy Sony when you want RCA." "50 goes to the house, you're the house. -I am NOT the house!" Hilarious but Cassie hardly laughed because she was so concerned about Joel. It's odd how distrustful she is of Lana. Lana basically keeps it 100% on the level with Joel. He called Lana, hired her, and then was in debt to her. So it isn't Lana that has "ruined his life", it's that his natural adolescent needs have placed in him in a series of escalating crises. Lana actually steps up to save his ass, because Joel helped her get away from Guido, and she genuinely really likes him.

One thing to note is when this movie came out Animal House was a huge hit and Hollywood just copy and pasted the format &there were dozens of R-rated teenage sex comedies. Most had a basic premise of a young man trying to lose his virginity and in a few finding love or learning a lesson. They were usually crude, raunchy, slapstick humor and mostly forgettable low budget and low quality overall. The makers of this film made a high quality film that has great cinematography, killer soundtrack by Tangerine Dream, great acting and a smart script. It elevated itself above movies of a similar ilk and created memorable star making scene that catapulted Tom Cruise from a supporting actor into a box office star. It definitely has stood the test of time to become a modern classic.

Who knows if he would've been cast later on for *The Sopranos* and *The Matrix* if he hadn't had a chance to double-dip on screens all across America as Deputy U.S. Marshal Cosmo Renfro in *The Fugitive* and *U.S. Marshals* ? I lived in Deerfield when this film crew showed up to shoot a scene at the train station . My friend Tina and I hung around the set all day and nobody but the on-set medic would talk to us. We asked him what’s this movie about? A high schoolers parents go away for the weekend and he turns his house into a brothel… what? Sounds dumb! Who’s in it? Tom Cruise…. Tom who?? Tom Cruise… he was in T.A.P.S. …..? TAPS? don’t remember him..is he here? No but if you stick around he might be later… I left ..Tina didn’t and ended up meeting and talking to Tom for 10 minutes.. who knew!!??

I grew up in Deerfield too and remember the filming too. Highland Park and the Deerfield train station (train was going the wrong way, south instead of north), Howie Rifkin in the front yard was played by a DHS student a year behind me. Great times!

Other HBO gems from back then: Porky's 1 & 2, Class, Valley Girl, The Wild Life, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, and gotta throw in Over The Edge, although I think that was '79; prolly hit hbo in 81 or 82; good times to be a kid. 😊

People often make the mistake of looking up the release date and not the filming date. This was filmed between July and November of 1982, meaning Tom was only 20 when he made this movie. So he is 20 playing an 18 year old.

@norwegianblue2017 I understand. Just from a personal standpoint, i think the theatrical cut is too short. I usually prefer director's cut versions of films, especially Ridley Scott films, because they almost alway give more character development and add value to the overall story. And ive never minded long films if they're enjoyable to watch. But you're right about the Tangerine Dream score.

"Born on the Fourth of July" (1989) is a Vietnam war drama, more post war, a true story based on the Ron Kovic autobiography. Tom Cruse was Oscar nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role (well deserved). The movie garnered 8 total Oscar nominations including Best Movie and Best Director (Oliver Stone). Playing Ron Kovic, the movie remains as Cruise's most praised performance on screen. A must see for any Tom Cruise fan.

This Movie launched Tom Cruises career. side note: This was released when I was a Jr. in high school. We went to the "big town" Yakima Wa. There was the drag, where everyone still went down the road showing of their muscle cars, hot rods and racers. And there were "ladies of the night" on the side walks. We would throw pennies and hot dogs at them and shout " go tell Guido (the killer pimp)" Ah, I'm not proud of it, yet I still chuckle at the memories 😋
