Fun fact: The final fight was filmed during an actual event (with other, real fights). None of the fans there knew Rocky was going to come out, and he got the biggest cheers that night (more than any of the real fighters). That moment at the end when he’s emotional and the fans were chanting was genuinely Stallone emotional at the fans’ adoration of Rocky.

If I recall right, they also filmed two versions of the ending there - one where Rocky won and one where he lost. So the crowd there couldn't leak the result. But what I love most about the final version of that scene is how Rocky walks off in his own personal triumph to those cheers as the decision is announced in the background, because it doesn't really matter - to Rocky or to us.

The Rocky statue was taken down in front of the museum because the museum had deemed it a "movie prop" and since the movies had ended, it was time to get rid of it. The city took it down and moved it to another area in the city. Later, through negotiations and compromise, the statue was finally considered "art" and returned to the museum, but not at the top of the steps where it had been. It is now on the side in front of the museum and you can still visit it. Funny side note: the tour guide we had mentioned 99% of questions tourists have about the city of Philadelphia can be answered with one of 3 answers - Benjamin Franklin, Cheesesteaks, or ROCKY.

It was moved to in front of the Philadelphia Spectrum, which in-universe is where Rocky fought Apollo Creed both times. When they were filming Rocky V, they moved it back to the Art Museum, then it went back to the Spectrum. Three months before Rocky Balboa was released, the statue was moved from the Spectrum to a grassy area next to the foot of the steps. At the top of the steps is a plaque of Stallone’s shoe prints where the statue originally stood.

Originally Adrian was supposed die in the original draft of Rocky 5. Tailia Shire was ok with it, but the studio vetoed it and Stallone vision was compromised. It was agreed with Tailia that she would be in Rocky Balboa in person..

I do love how behind the scenes Talia Shire was quick to state publicly that it was not the result of any bad blood between Sylvester Stallone and herself, but rather a decision they reached together as it would better serve the story dramatically speaking. She was in the original script... but Stallone was fighting it because Adrian would never let him fight at that age, AND he wouldn't want too... he wouldn't have "that beast inside him" - Later when asked why she wasn't in it, she said "I am in it... they WHOLE film is about me." Sylvester Stallone has really developed as an actor. The scene where Paulie said Adrian left and Rocky says, "She didn't leave Paulie, she died" and his voice broke slightly when he said "died" was an absolute master class of acting. I've seen that scene a half dozen times and every single time I see it I choke up because I feel his loss.

He was great from the beginning though - after the first Rocky he was considered to be the next great actor, until he became "just" an action star. He and Arnold are both underrated actors. There are lots of muscle men out there, none of them have what they had to be able to carry movies like that. They're also both very smart guys that people always thought were dumb.

Boxing past your prime is nothing out of the ordinary in the real world. There's dozens upon dozens of stories about old guys not wanting to give up what they had since the were young. George Forman was a prime example of that. He boxed in the 60's and 70's,retired came back years later and won the belt in his late 40's early 50's

Stallone had a lot of trouble deciding to kill off Adrian, but when he made the decision, he actually went and had a face-to-face meeting with Talia Shire (Adrian) and discussed it with her. She ultimately agreed that it was best for the story. Had she said that she wanted to be in the movie, or she disagreed with the decision to kill off Adrian, Stallone would've written her back into the movie.

Tailia actually was supposed to die in Rocky 5... She was ok with the decision back then but the studios insisted that she live as soon as they were into the production. Hence Rocky 5 was severely compromised by studio interference..

There's a deleted scene that was going to play when Paulie goes down the alleyway after ranting in the restaurant. He basically cries his eyes out realising that in 31 years he's done nothing with his life and he wonders why didn't he die instead of his sister, realising how terrible he treated both her and Rocky. It ends with him asking if he can move back into living with Rocky (the reason Paulie moved out was to go and live with his girlfriend who was cut from the film) and he says "If I'm gonna be lonely, I'd rather be lonely with you" and Rocky agrees saying he's still his crazy best friend. While I understand why the scene was cut from the film as Paulie moving out with his girlfriend didn't really add much to the main story, that scene would've made us completely understand Paulie. He wouldn't be justified for how he treated them in the past, but you'd really feel sorry for him with how visibly upset he was.

The story was always to have Adrian passed away. Stallone said that there’s no way Rocky would need to fight if she was still alive nor would she ever let him at his age, so her death was supposed to be what made him feel alone and empty, and motivate him to do something with himself. It had nothing to do with the actress :)

True story about when they filmed the fight. The venue was actually a real arena, obviously and there was a fight prior to filming. They informed the crowd already there about the filming of the Rocky movie, and if they wanted to stay and be part of it, no one left. That's why they have the crowd they do, and it's shot in the exact same way an actual boxing match is shot, they didn't even need to move any of the cameras. This truly showed what a tremendous actor and storyteller Sylvester Stallone is. So glad you both enjoyed it.

There's a great deleted scene where Paulie completely breaks down in tears behind the restaurant because of how much he misses his sister (a much shorter version of the scene is in the movie right after he gets laid off). You should be able to find it easily on KZbin.

edit: TL:DR... Thanks, that is a great scene, although imo it ultimately probably wouldn't have fit the flow of the movie perfectly even though the performances were great. Yeah I'd like to say thank you as well for making me aware of this really moving scene, it was definitely a tear-jerker. The movie has a lot of really emotional moments so I don't think it would have been out of place at all, I think it would have really added to it and helped complete the story arc without pushing it or leading it in a different direction that didn't fit the movie overall... I hope that makes some sense lol. Imo Stallone excelled in every role that he was involved in all the Rocky movies, so if it was his decision to cut this scene, I'm sure he had good reason to do that, I just hope it wasn't the studio sticking their noses in like usual... But either way, it's a real shame because both of their acting was fantastic and it was a brief but very well written deeper look into Paulie's mind, which would have really helped complete his character progression that then moved onto him helping Rocky and both of them seemingly in a lot better place emotionally by the end of the movie after they have each hopefully released the beasts from their basements. Although after re-watching it, I do think the couple of flashbacks in the scene should have centred around Paulie and Adrian, maybe one with him being nasty and putting her down, and another with Adrian putting him in his place once she started feeling less powerless around him and less timid of everything in general. That would have really highlighted her remarkable character development arc better than anything else, I think... while really celebrating Adrian's overall story and Talia's performance (especially early in the franchise where her transformation was the most significant), which from what I have read in other comments is exactly what Stallone was trying to do. Plus it may have really added emotion and clarity to Paulie's break down... not that it needed it (unless this was the first Rocky movie you saw that is). But if they didn't want to show that visually, I don't think they should have added any flashbacks... Rocky's loving memories of Adrian, while Paulie was baring his soul about his pain and regrets regarding his own treatment towards the only family he knew, seemed completely out of place, especially considering Rocky's position is already so well established and obvious that he hardly had any dialogue in the scene because it just wasn't necessary until the end. All that beautifully shot scene in that dank alley needed was their great performances, and Rocky just being there for Paulie, and listening to his friend... And then at the end telling him he wants and needs him in his life... It was perfect. Anyway, maybe that's why the scene was cut. And I think I just changed my own mind with my ramblings lol, cutting it was probably for the best... even if it was the studio's decision lol.

This movie is the perfect closure of a movie franchise, it really all came full circle. He started with finding the love of his life and Adrian was the heart and brain, giving him the talks Rocky needed. Now he lost her, but she truly lives on in him as he is now giving his son the PERFECT speech outside the restaurant, that is where Adrian is still in this movie - he learned from her and is passing it on. (Rocky 5 doesn't exist in my universe, 1-4 + Rocky Balboa are perfect and full circle.) I loved re-watching these with you, thank you.

I mean they have hired professionals to tell them what to say in each situation, aka publicists. Like... I used to think Will Smith is the nicest guy and watched his KZbin videos, where he seems super positive and motivating, then he goes on to assault Chris Rock in the Oscars. Renny Harlin who directed Stallone in Cliffhanger (1993) said that he has a massive ego, later they made "Driven" and Sly started to act like a drama queen when it turned out he isn't the main character. This was in 2001, and the movie sucked. Maybe he is nicer now, ppl tend to wisen up when they grow old, but some ppl never do. Lot of people I used to admire turned out to be douches, like Kevin Spacey, Mel Gibson, Luc Besson, Louis CK etc... most people in Hollywood seem to be crazy. Even Tom Cruise is able to appear as "likeable", but he is basically a crazy cult leader in disguise

Trivia: Adrian was alive in the first few drafts of the script, while Robert Balboa was in the U.S. Air Force. The early title was Rocky VI: Puncher's Chance. At this point, the story revolved around Rocky running a local gym for youths. However, Sylvester Stallone felt that the film lacked the emotional impact it needed, so he and Talia Shire came to an agreement that her character would be best left out of the film, as this would create an emotional chasm for Rocky from the very first moment. To ensure that fans did not think she had been written out of the film because of a dispute with Stallone or because she refused to be in it, Shire made a public statement supporting Stallone's decision to kill off the character.

Mason Dixon was played by real life boxing champ Antonio Tarver. The smoothness of his movement and his awesome proportions make the fight look so much better. I also really liked that they made the character a pretty decent and sympathetic guy with his own character arc.

I actually disagree. Tarver was not an actor, he was a fighter. You can see several times his head goes the wrong way with a punch he was supposedly hit by, or simply not react at all to supposedly hard shots. He himself looks good as a fighter. The actual boxing between him and Rocky looks worse as a result.

@@yessum15 Roughly 26:39? Rocky throws and lands a massive right hook that Tarver barely reacts to. This is repeated quite often throughout. Now, do the fighters in Rocky typically massively exaggerate every punch? Definitely. But Tarver rarely reacts like he was hit at all, expect in the close up slow motion shots. To be clear though, Tarver by himself obviously moves like a fighter, and looks the part. I think the other issue is this makes Stallone look much worse by comparison. I don't know, just my personal take.

@@robertcampbell8070 Rock throws 2 punches & Mason does move his head in the right direction at the right speed. He snaps his chin about 45-60° off center for each punch. That's a lot & that's about right. Whatch it in slo-mo. Tarver is reacting as if the punches are hard enough to force him to discontinue his forward press, but not hard enough to drop him. This is pretty much how it would look in real life. It's rare to land a shot that snaps a boxers head more than that if it isn't a fight ender. And boxers generally aren't getting wobbled more than once or twice in a fight before going down. The remainder of the time you're really just looking at interruption of momentum and where & how the shot landed to determine if it's hard. This sort of economy of movement is what I really like. It's more obvious in his offense where his straights have no fat or flare, but it's also evident in the way he mimes defense & damage (with the exception of a few times where the director clearly told him to exaggerate the movement). I agree it does make Stallone's lumbering overdramatized movements look a little silly in comparison, but they took a pretty good step to mitigate that: They threw in a few clips of Tarver & Stallone actually sparring to pad out between the large movements. This is leagues ahead of say, Rocky 2. Still a great movie, and I loved the fight as a child. But I remember rewatching it as an adult & not being able to breathe because I was laughing so hard at that fight. For the rest of the week I was bringing over friends just to make them watch it and lose their minds laughing. To this day, that fight in particular is one of the funniest things ever put to film.

the "watch" argument between Paulie and Rocky came from the beginning of Rocky 3. Paulie was upset that he was stuck in life and Rocky had everything going for him, but all Rocky gave to him was a watch he didn't need... because he already had a watch. so the last thing he needed at "retirement" was yet another watch. it was one of my favorite nostalgia moments in the movie, but I have watched this series a ton and is easy to miss

Fun fact, the fight was filmed prior to a real fight as a surprise. The audience organically started cheering Rocky during the fight and were supposedly more into Rocky's fight than the real fight that night. Since it was live, they also filmed 4 endings so people didn't know what the real ending was going to be prior to release. Also in the original draft, Rocky was going to get with the girl at the end but was talked out of it (right decision in my eyes).

"Why would they take his statue down?" The reasoning was because it's a world-renowned Art Museum and that movie prop is not art. At the time of this movie, we'd relocated down to where all of our sports stadiums are, but since the movie came out, people got pissed off enough that we got it moved back to the Art Museum, but at the bottom of the steps in its own little alcove. If you DO run the steps, make sure you check out the statue to the right of the steps :)

@@William_Sk She lets the video be about the movie, not about her. You're so right, it's the only channel I've seen where it's actually like watching a movie with a friend. She's not talking over everything, giving her take on cinematography or acting. She's just...reacting to the movie. I saw a few recently on other channels where they felt the need to prove how smart they are by reiterating every plot point or vocal inflection. It really is simple stuff. The movie is the star, the reactor is the buddy next to you in the theater. You don't buy tickets to see your friend, you buy the ticket to see the movie.

Been looking forward to this one since your "Rocky V" reaction. You ladies made my least favorite Rocky movie in the franchise more enjoyable to watch. I love "Rocky Balboa"! I always shed a few tears during this movie. But it's so good. Rocky's speech to his son has always been my favorite part. And Milo Ventimiglia as Robert(Rocky Jr.) was perfect casting. I'm glad that Sylvester Stallone wanted to make this last "Rocky" movie. Definitely made up for the previous one. Sly was older than I am now when he filmed this, but it's hard not to feel emotional seeing him back in the ring as his body wears down and still having the Rocky magic. Looking back on what we could do in our younger years as compared to now many years later can be difficult and heartbreaking, but even a Hollywood movie and Sly (who defies time and has a whole staff to get ripped) gave us a few happy hours, and tears, and this movie let us leave the theatre feeling good about getting older and understanding dealing with loss and that is no small thing. Thanks for sticking with the entire series, and I was fortunate to watch, and appreciate over decades Rocky as we all got older together.

You may recall that Spider Rico was the boxer that Rocky fought in the opening of the first movie. When Paulie gets upset about Rocky's mention of a retirement watch, that's a reference to the scene from Rocky III when Paulie angrily throws away the "stinkin' Ex-Lax" watch Rocky gave him.

I also believe that this is one of the best ones in all the franchise. Not only does the story go full circle, bringing closure to Rocky, it also has incredible scenes that hit you no matter what. My favorite scenes are: 1- Rocky's speech to his son, which is inspirational as it can be. 2- Rocky's speech at the boxing comission which was clearly biased against him to favor their interests. 3- The training montage (that one will pump you up, ANYTIME)... Let's start building some hurting bombs... (TA TA TARA TARA TARA... TU RU RUUUU TA RA RAAAA...) and of course, 4- The final fight, he gets almost knocked out and remembers ("How much you can take and keep moving forward... Get up!"), shocking everyone including Dixon... You are one crazy old man! That means he truly learned how to respect him and even admire him shocking the whole world in the process. This is an excellent movie!

The end credits for this one has a beautiful sequence that really made me tear up, four decades of Rocky. Like leaving a friend. At the time I thought this was the final film, but then they surpassed it with Creed and passed the baton.

As someone who saw Rocky in the theatre in 1976, at first this one made me very sad in terms of the getting older and losing people aspect (I lost my wife a few years ago), but with that being said I think it was really great how they brought the whole thing full circle with Spider Rico, Little Marie, and the visits to the old neighborhood locations. For me, it seemed that the story started to decline with Rocky 4 and 5 left an empty feeling. I am glad they decided to make this one. I think it left the story in a good place despite the sadness. Kind of like real life is.

What's truly unique about the ROCKY series is not just that it's a franchise spanning almost half a century, that its characters age in real time or that it has at least one entry in every decade since the '70s (some of the same things could be said of the James Bond, Mission: Impossible and Harry Potter movies), but that it's arc essentially mirrors that of its creator/star Sylvester Stallone. When Stallone wrote the screenplay to the first ROCKY, he was a nobody, a poor underdog with dreams of making it big. Someone took a chance on him and he became a success. Hence, in the sequel, Rocky wins the fight. By 3, Stallone was a rich megastar with clout in his industry... and so is Rocky. With 4 both actor and character became so big that they achieved cultural icon status. By the time of 5, the glow of both was fading. It's ironic but appropriate that the story involves Rocky being brought down so low because that's what happened to Stallone with the movie. It was the poorest-received film in the franchise (critically and commercially) and it looked like the end of the line for Rocky: a great series/character going out not with a bang but with a whimper. Rocky was a has-been and it looked like Stallone might be too. Then, 15 years later, Stallone returns with ROCKY BALBOA and an attempt to prove that both he and Rocky are still relevant, that they still had something to contribute, something to say... and they proved it. This one was the critical and commercial success that ROCKY 5 was not. This was the real end of Rocky's story. Until writer-director Ryan Coogler (BLACK PANTHER) approached Stallone with a terrific idea for a reboot that brought new blood into the ongoing story and turned Rocky's character into a mentor. This is Stallone the filmmaker handing off the reins of his popular creation to the next generation of cinematic artists. This is great series, mainstream Hollywood genre storytelling elevated to the level of personal expression. This is art, Stallone's magnum opus (surpassing even RAMBO and EXPENDABLES) and it will be talked about as long as movies are talked about.

One deleted scene that's included on the DVD shows more of the dialogue between Rocky and Paulie kn the alley after Paulie is fired. Paulie breaks down and tells Rocky "I miss my sister" and how Rocky always has treated him well.. Shows how close Rocky and Paulie have become throughout the years.

The original Rocky is a perfect movie, but I really really love this script and Stallone's performance here. The scene with Rocky and his son outside the restaurant is so wonderful. Pauly finally has some redemption, and I'm glad Stallone wrote that into this movie as well.

Some fun facts: Uncle Paulie's painting were actually done by the actor Burt Young (who was an actual boxer in his day). Cuff and Link are the same turtles from the first film, and lastly, Spider Rico was the guy that Rocky fought in the opening of the very first film. Lots of great callbacks from the first film, and def my third favorite in this franchise for these reasons (I, II, VI). Keep up the great work!

I really related to the Rocky franchise because my life was also a million to one shot. He was always the underdog dealing with the road blocks in life fighting through, enduring, going the distance. I was the underdog from the cradle and my single mom rest her soul was my Micky never allowing me to quit But regardless of the hard times the core of goodness stayed with him. I’ve found the Rocky films to be a guide of how to fight through hard times so I applied his philosophy in my life. I was an I have been able to overcome the tough times because of the inspiration of Rocky Balboa. I was 27 when this movie first came out. I didn’t fully understand what he was dealing with until I entered my mid 40s. That you start losing physical abilities, people you loved through your life passing away, looking back on the memories of your life. But realizing that a fighter always has a chance because the heart is the last to age. I like this movie better then Rocky V as well. I loved your reaction video!! There is a deleted scene where Paulie misses Adrian(it happens right before he says in that back alley “You’re gonna do alright Rock”) and let me tell you, watch at your own risk. I’ve balled my eyes out on that scene several times seeing Paulie break down like that. I almost wish they would have kept it in the movie but it probably wouldn’t have seemed to flow very well and it did seem out of place, but it was so powerful and really endeared you to Rocky even more.😊

Dixon is a great foil for Rocky, because he's the first opponent since Creed back in Rocky II who isn't a villain. He's young and brash and initially disrespectful, but he's not malicious and he learns respect by the time their fight is through. I also like the realism in Dixon being disliked for being too dominant, something real fighters have gone through over the years. That's the eternal debate amongst fight fans: is it more impressive to be the one great fighter in a weak era, rarely if ever losing, or one of several all-time greats that all pick up losses because they had one another to contend with?

I was there for the filming of this one,well just the scene at the Italian market which amounted to a few seconds of screen time but it was an all day thing. All the crew and fans,extras etc. referred to Stallone as Rocky the entire time

I have always been a fan of Rocky. The series and the character… I was born right after the first film came out. Like Star Wars and Star Trek and a few others of that era Rocky has literally always been a part of my life. Watching through your eyes (and your sister) and with you has been such a wonderful rediscovery of this character. Cassie. We all miss Mick. The actors name is Burgess Meredith. He was in many movies besides "Rocky." I think you'd enjoy him in "Grumpy Old Men", and "Grumpier Old Men." They're comedies about two guys who are neighbors. Burgess Meredith plays one of the guys father. Really funny (and heartwarming) movies.

Well in a way it IS half of what rocky 5 should have been. Think about the similarities: 1)rocky is past his prime. 2)he undergoes severe family drama, much of it has to do with his son. 3)he lives in his old neighborhood but does find a good living. In rocky v he was running g a gym, here he runs a restaurant. 4)rocky returns to fight someone after external and internal pressures convince him. 5)during the fight rocky experiences flashbacks involving Mickey. The difference is that rocky v didn’t have the good writing Stallone shows in rocky 6 and it didn’t have the same emotional strengths as rocky 6 dude that’s not to say rocky v is god awful, I don’t think it is-but it’s telling that it’s greatest strength was that it forced Stallone to change his attitude towards rocky movies.

I am a very huge Rocky fan!! That fight that happened in Las Vegas in the movie was actually real, meaning that it was really filmed at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. All of the fans who were in attendance were really were all actual there to see Bernard Hopkins take on Jermaine Taylor. So the fans got a special treat in seeing Rocky Balboa take on Mason Dixon {his real name is Antonio Tarver and he was an actual boxer). I loved listening to the commentary for this movie, and I actual teared up while listening to it too. I love your channel!! Have a great weekend!!

You are right about what they said about fear. As and infantryman who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, I can say that I just about always had fear when I went on missions. Everyone had it, especially on those missions when you knew/felt something was wrong, or going to happen. Fear made you more aware, fear gave you courage, fear made me react. Fear, kept me alive. I read in a book one time from a favorite author of mine. The character in the book said, "anyone who says they have never been afraid in their life has either never really done anything, or lying to themselves". I find that very true. Alas, if you love the Rocky franchise, might I suggest another great boxing movie? This movie/character is based on a true person...or persons. He is the "real Rocky". The movie is called Cinderalla Man. Great watch.

There was a very touching scene where after Paulie left the restaurant in the back alley, he broke down crying over Adrian, saying how much he missed her and how he wished it was him who died instead of her. Very touching scene and was played so well by Burt Young and was his own redemption. Sad it was cut out.

Of the solo Rocky films, this one might be my favorite in terms of storytelling! The speech he gave his son Robert is not just a good movie speech, it’s a good life speech! This whole movie was so good. I’m not for sure but I believe they deliberately wrote it this way for Adrian to die. Talia Shiere was upset about it at first, but when she read the script and how they handled her character, she was actually OK with it.
