I was a huge fan of KP before she blew up with "I Kissed a Girl". I found her when Madonna said she was listening to her "Ur So Gay" song. I remember her vlogs and I even remember when she had set up a "Call Katy" line where you could call and speak to her for 1.99 a minute or something like that (now I wish I had done that!!!). I fell in love with her sense of humor early on and her ability to inject that humor into her songs. I stayed in love with her music for so long because she could make some powerhouse songs, empowering songs, she loved retro fashion and killed in it... I began to see less and less of that sense of humor but she retained it in her interviews at least. She completely changed and I no longer listen. Everything I liked about her is gone. She's not even that funny anymore. Now she's political, blonde, depressed and sad and has a split personality(?!?), and takes her music waaaayyyy too seriously. Now I listen to Taylor Swift because she is everything KP used to be! I'm sad about that for KP but it is what it is!

I think the real problem here was that what “California Girls”, “Teenage Dream”, “Last Friday Night”, “Part of Me”, “Wide Awake”, and “Roar”, all have in common, is that they were all written by Bonnie McKee. That woman penned a good chunk of Katy’s singles, and they were all hits! Also, sad to say, but Katy’s entire discography, including some of the songs mentioned above was co-written by, and produced by, Dr. Luke. Katy only stopped working with these two people after prism, when she recorded witness. And that’s the tea. 🤷🏻♀️
@peaceful_chaos145 жыл бұрын
PLease go listen to Katy's solo written songs like I'm Still Breathing, By the Grace of God, Thinking of You etc. if you're suggesting that she can't write good and heartfelt lyrics on her own. And no, her "entire discography" wasnt co-written and produced by Dr. Luke. She has had smash hits without him.
@chriiiiisco5 жыл бұрын
Sam I agree with you. All I’m saying is that there was a difference in her chart position when she stopped working with Dr. Luke, and Bonnie McKee. And between One of the Boys, Teenage Dream, the re-release of Teenage Dream, AND prism (her most successful albums) the hits/singles were either written by Bonnie/Dr. Luke, produced by Dr. Luke and or Max Martin, or both. He’s always credited as “Lukasz Gottwald”. He’s literally on almost every song of every album, except for witness. Katy is capable of writing beautiful songs, but that’s not what the video was about, nor was my comment. The video was about why witness was not as successful as her previous work. And her previous work involved both of those people. The same thing happened with Gaga. When she stopped working with RedOne, the quality of her music changed, and so did her position on the charts. People noticed a difference, and they didn’t like it. 🤷🏻♀️ it’s sad.
@peaceful_chaos145 жыл бұрын
@@chriiiiisco Yeah i understand what you're saying, those albums were indeed executively produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin, but she couldnt continue working with him after the whole Kesha case....and there are so many much bigger factors that contributed to the chart difference during witness than that, if the rollout was done properly and all the negative unexpected things mentioned in this video hadn't happened, witness era still could have been successful without Dr. Luke. The material was still there. It was her image at the time that people trashed on which affected the sales.
@MrPerry4355 жыл бұрын
Bitch Please It’s absolutely impossible to know what the actual cause of her low charting was because of all the variables, but I do not believe it was because of Bonnie McKee. Honestly her decline in success isn’t shocking, every pop star experiences this at one point or another. What IS shocking was how rapid and dramatic it was. It wasn’t gradual in the slightest, she fell straight down.
@rao8033 жыл бұрын
It isn't usually gradual. There's something known the "fourth album curse" that after 3 successful albums, the 4th isn't well received, it's missunderstood (artists try to reinvent themselves and try new things but fail), so it eventually flops, because it's already the fourth album and the general public is starting to get tired of them. This also happened to Lady Gaga with Artpop in 2013, and many other artists. So after this era of controversy, massive critics and low comercial performences, the decline in popularity accelerates and so does the comercial success, until they're capable enough to reinvent themselves and come back with an excellent work.

@@popdissected4400 Well, Kesha was also huge. She took time to deal with her rape and so she spent a lot of time without putting anything out. When she returned she stopped making 100% commercial music and being marketed as the young crazy sexy blonde party-girl, which has lead to lesser commercial success. Still I believe she has gotten better with her music. Katy just released an album with less quality, which can happen to anyone (in fact, a lot of people expect High Road to be kinda mediocre) and her public appareances made her look like an adult trying too hard to seem like a teenager (In my personal opinion). Anyways, I loved the video!

Mars Though you sound a little more respectful than most people commenting about her and Witness era in general, you still don’t seem to understand that her feelings were very real and that she captured them in form of the witness album which is an honest and rough record and not her trying to be woke or trying anything particular in general. Yes, there were things that she was trying to get across with every song but they were all things she truly felt and not because she thought they would be received well or make her look good like you’re making it sound. You’re trying to invalidate a real person’s feelings, someone who has clearly gone through a lot and comparing her or her struggles to other artists and their hardships is honestly insensitive and disrespectful to both of them.
@mario28375 жыл бұрын
@@SkyLene I get it but the issue is not the album itself, I feel like a good image and the place you occupy in the industry is usually more important in terms of commercial appeal, and Katy's image through Witness just wasn't as likeable. Mars You’re right in saying that’s why Witness failed to appeal to the general public. It still is no indicator of the quality of the album or the „realness“ of it. @popdissected44005 жыл бұрын
I agree! I think many songs suffered from lyricism that came off very heavy handed. Miss You More would be a great track if not for the very clunky lyrics. Bon Appetit, while a great bop, had its double entendre pushed to a level that was generally uncomfortable. Deja Vu has very sub par lyricism that doesn't articulate it's theme entirely. But with that, several tracks do have very strong, confident lyrics. The promotion was a bit wonky, and the manifestation of what Katy wanted wasn't all the way there. We should have known with Witness, all of Katy's further promotion would just be terrible. I mean, speaking of 2019 - her single promotion has made no sense and hurt all her songs' potential.

To me, the Witness era was bad because it felt so fake and insincere. Everything from the music to the dyed blonde hair that really didn't suit her, imo. Also, if she truly struggled with depression - she should know better than to indirectly poke fun at Britney for shaving her head. Those live streams of her supposed "therapy sessions," weird yoga, and free feminism classes were just the cherry on top of the disastrous campaign. It felt more like propaganda. I also believe her music suffered because she severed her work relationship with Dr. Luke who basically invented the Katy Perry sound as we know it (along with Max Martin and Benny Blanco).

Katy Perry's story sounds like Alice Cooper all over again. When Vincent Fournier created his alter ego Alice Cooper, he never imagined that his alter ego would take over full time. Especially as Alice Cooper was a hard-drinking, very dominant persona, Vincent Fournier got lost in his own creation and it took him years of breakdowns and therapy you find himself again. Katherine Hudson created Katy Perry, a very bubbly and overtly sexy persona, very different from the far more reserved and troubled Katherine. When she felt Katy became too dominant she tried to course-correct, but the fans wouldn't have it and critisized her for suddenly being "pretentious" and "not true to herself", while in reality the opposite was true. Yet another example of the dangers of creating a stage persona or alter ego and then almost constantly living that alter ego, because it can cause severe trouble when that alter ego actually takes over control.

First off, I'd like to address some things I missed in the video - Katy's "Witness: World Wide" 4 day livestream, the controversy of collabing with Migos because of the claims they were homophobic, Katy's comment about Britney Spears at the 2017 GRAMMYs - as well as the specific reactions from the general public. Also, the sales stats provided for "Dark Horse" and "Roar" are faulted. Those were added last minute to the video and are very vague and confusing. Just ignore them, please. I don't want anyone to think I'm blatantly lying about the sales; I didn't do accurate research for them. This was one of my first videos I ever did, so if it was remade, a lot more information would be included on all the other things happening during this time. But since it was one of my firsts, I didn't want to make the video be too long. Thank you to everyone who's been bringing to my attention the things that were missed. I don't understand why so many people hated her hair. I think she actually pulled off the look pretty well, as she's got the right face shape for it (imo). What blew my mind was when people were comparing this to that time when Britney Spears shaved her head in 2008, even though Katy only cut her hair short and didn't shave it. Plus they both did it for different reasons. Britney did it because she was having a mental breakdown and wanted to get herself out of the music industry because of the way they abused her for years (at least I think that was the reason). "A woman should be able to feel free and liberated with her body without being subjected to others gaze" This statement seems SUPER loaded in the context of a pop star. I could get on board with any of the following: "Without being subject to harassment" or "Without being subject to disparagement" or "Without being subject to unwanted advances"... but to says "... subjected to others gaze" disregards the fundamental truth of her profession. Her appearance is part of the product she's selling. She doesn't just make albums and release songs. She does videos and tours which are, in no small part, visual mediums. Is it unfortunate that the industry doesn't allow the "simple studio artist"? Yeah... yeah it is. And maybe that's an issue to take up with hollywood / the music industry in general. But no pop star is free to dress/appear/groom/whatever themselves with abandon without financial repercussions. I love Katy (and I say that as a grown ass man... I wish I could claim my teenage daughter was the reason but the truth is, I like pop music... sue me). But I happen to think that Small Talk and Never Really Over are better than anything on Witness. I think Witness "flopped" because she took a risk. She changed her music style and it didn't hit. Sometimes artists do that well. Sometimes they do it poorly. In this case, people didn't like the new style as much (and here I'm speaking of audio style). Her three newer songs (I'm counting the XMas song here) are clearly a return to that older style. When you compare them to "Bon Appetit" or "Swish Swish", they're very much throwbacks and I think that's intentional (and, from a commercial success point of view, a good decision).

I think it's a bit simplistic to imply the era failed just because people didn't care about her as a person. As you said, she had always been open about her struggles, but the way she bared those struggles during the Witness era would have been off-putting and indulgent from any star, not because fans don't care about the artist but because they (just like friends and family) are not the artist's therapist. In any case I think it's a shame the album didn't do well, the song "Witness" is one of my all-time favorites from her. But I'm also glad she was able to bounce back from it all and find her footing.

I still think she can comeback to the top. I really liked her "Never Really Over" however, she already "had a time" in the music industry so people don't bother. She needs a huge album in order really bounce back.

Dude, I appreciate the video and the points you’ve made. But some of them sound like they are viewed through the lens of a hardcore fan. Witness simply just did not emulate her need to express herself. She’s always been a radio pop singer but Witness took it to a whole new level; the charm and sound became generic, the fake woke stuff was spot on, and yes, her hair style really affected her because the edgy cut didn’t match the generic style of the music. Katy was/is great at what she did/does but she set herself up as one of those pop stars who are just as good as their next single. We are 10+ years into her career and she’s working with producers like Zedd who peaked 5-6 years ago!? I mean cmon. Her audience is growing and we need to see and hear and feel growth. We need that solid body of work now.
@popdissected44005 жыл бұрын
Woah, very nice points! You're right, she needs to change and adapt to the industry and how it is now. A very good point - "you're only as good as your last single". And for some, they see that as either "Chained to the Rhythm" or "Dark Horse" / "Roar". Katy needs to create a solid, cohesive record that really pushes her. While "Witness" was experimental for her, I think she did play it safe for many of the tracks and they didn't have the execution or power of tracks off "PRISM" or "Teenage Dream" - or even "One of the Boys".

For me, as a non fan, witness was the only album, I got connected with. I liked the dark "gay-club"-electro sound and the deepness of the songs. I don't care about her as a person, although I respect her as an artist. I appreciate your work for this video. It gave me a whole new look at this time of pop-history.

I know the reasons. 1) people hated her hair. As a blonde she didn't have the same personality and beauty as a brunette. And she reminded miley way too much which it wasn't good for her to be unique. I am sorry, she didn't pulled off. I understand when you said she was sexualised, but let's be honest, people listen to music with their eyes nowadays with music videos and youtube itself, unfortunately looks are better than talent. 2) she is older right now and she didn't do anything that different that people would get interested in her career right now. 3) her fight with Taylor's made more headlines then anything else she made at the time and that only helped taylor 4) the lyrics of the album were so damm weak. 5) for God's sake, HER HAIR

Yes I agree with this. And also, and I'm sorry im going to be completely blunt here, her outfits completely changed and she wasnt showing her boobs and making them the focus as much as she used to (the whipped cream, the fireworks, the risque photoshoots, etc) you dont really see that anymore. While she's still gorgeous, the way she was mainstream "hot" before is very different from the beauty she has now. Now I know that sounds crass but if we're going to be completely honest, it's what put off a lot of guys who used to drool over her and made them lose interest. Like someone else mentioned in the comments, she was still acting like the same Katy but it wasnt coming off the same way it did when she had her old pin-up girl image, like, she could get away with the zany behavior because she looked so good and people thought, "Aww I love her! So goofy!", when she would act outrageous or zany with her former "sexy, cartoon pinup doll" looks, it's considered, "bubbly and endearing". But with a buttoned up mom blouse and the Karen haircut dabbing beside James Corden, it's considered, "try-hard and off-putting", and the charm of their sexy Katy was gone, at least for some. It's harsh but I really think it played a huge part.

I think the biggest thing for Katy to overcome if she makes a new album is how she can embody elements of Katy Perry while staying true to herself as Katheryn Hudson. Me personally, I wasn’t a fan of the Witness era because it was such a big change from all her other eras, it didn’t feel like Katy, and it flopped. At the same time, I understand Katy’s struggles and ultimately things happen for a reason, and I believe Witness had to flop so that she can really discover herself creatively. With her new music being really good, I think she’s starting to realize that and now we’re seeing songs like Never Really Over, that have a deep personal connection to Katy but still feel like a Katy song, along with her other songs. I think if Katy can really promote her music and keep the same energy seen in her recent singles, I can see her come back stronger than ever and have a moment like Mariah Carey did back in the mid 2000s. Of course, I know Katy isn’t focused on promoting her music and just feels like releasing these singles, then that’s fine because she should be doing what’s best for her and the ultimate goal is for her to be happy. I really liked this video, it made me see the Witness era in a different light, and gave me it from what Katy’s perspective was, and helped me understand her a little bit better. And whether or not she continues to see the same success she did earlier this decade, I’ll always be a fan of her music and be listening to whatever she puts out.

Beauty standards 🤷♀️ Some just see "long hair" as the standard and what is acceptable 'attractive'.
@ThingsILikke3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the person- it worked on Angelina Jolie very well. Katy looks pretty no matter what but the hair cut was a bit of a lazy move. Doing your hair is hard work and women will sometimes get a really short cut cuz they don’t have the time or energy to do their hair.

@popdissected44005 жыл бұрын
For a while, I also thought it was her best. And obviously 'best' is very subjective and everyone's opinion varies. I used to believe it to be her best work cause it was so different from what she had previously created. Sonically it was unlike any of her previous work, and I saw that experimentation as something very great. I also thought Witness had some top notch songs. Tsunami, Pendulum and Roulette are my favorite 3 tracks off the record, and I think the best. They join the ranks of Wide Awake, Firework and Dark Horse in my opinion. Why I personally don't believe it's her best work is I think there's a lack of cohesion in the vision for the record, as well as it's intent. It does seem a bit muddled. Her previous efforts didn't have this issue cause they weren't marketed as something, they were just released. Witness however had a specific image associated with it - 'purposeful pop'. It lived up to it in certain songs, but most of that message didn't come through for me.
@ImJustinPineda5 жыл бұрын
Pop Dissected i Can see that but tbh although it may or may not be as cohesive, I think that was kinda the point. They all are not the same kinda songs, and many are a lot deeper in meaning than the average listener will realize. I think It just deserved more appreciation. And as a long time Katy fan, it’s the one I find that I listen to the most, even more than the others
@popdissected44005 жыл бұрын
@@ImJustinPineda Witness is also my most listened to record by her as well! By no means do I think it's bad, and it absolutely did not deserve the hate it got. For me, I felt some of Katy's lyricism, and production is clunky. Mind Maze is so painfully autotuned in the chorus, I still can't hear what the actual lyrics are - even though I know them. The entire song is great, I love the instrumental bridge and how the song closes - but the chorus makes it unlistenable. Regardless of Katy's intent, it does not translate well. I think intent is important to recognize. Even if a song has a 'deeper meaning', it can still be flawed in its' execution, and that doesn't mean the meaning isn't recognized or appreciated! Miss You More is probably the biggest lyrical offender on the record. "Saw a balloon floating away / Thought did someone let go / Or did they lose it?" I understand she's comparing that to her loss in her relationship, and questioning if SHE let go or lost her lover. But the lyricism is very insensible in my opinion. I know Katy loves using idioms, so I think she could have found a better way to execute that analogy that would be creative rather than bland. Despite my criticisms, I do love the record. I've been a KatyCat since the beginning of the Teenage Dream era! I don't want to sound like a hater, but I think part of supporting an artist is being able to recognize when you believe they've fallen short, or missed the mark. Because after all, nobody's perfect! :)
