@@JonCrs10 The tenth century was so wild for the Church that it legit took a 180 turn in the eleventh. The corruption of the tenth century happened because the Papacy was controlled by the italian nobles and german emperors, so to avoid this happening again the Popes in the following centuries tried to gain control over them instead.

For those of you who haven't picked up a bible in a minute, the irony to "St. Peter knowing what sex is" is that dude is literally mentioned in the gospels to have a mother in law and therefore at some point a wife. St. Peter is technically the only pope who was /supposed/ to know what sex was.
@daviddavis4885
@daviddavis4885 2 ай бұрын
It’s truly incredible the number of people who think Christians are anti-sex lol Maybe some Protestants are, but as anyone who knows a large Catholic family can attest, us Catholics are **extremely** pro-sex 🤣 The only requirement is that you be married and only have sex with your wife, which really isn’t that big of an ask.

::nods:: I was doing laundry while listening, misheard the era in question as “1896 to 1964”, and dropped everything to double-check. Because calling an era “The P^rnocracy” would not be unreasonable for historians/journalists writing just after Nixon’s resignation.

I saw the title, took it as blind faith that Blue had, in fact, spelled it correctly and said 'Boy, I can't wait to see how this one shakes out. I'm absolutely certain there were shenanigans involved.' Lo and behold: Shenanigans. Reality is stranger than fiction, and I always assume that the most insane interpretation is the right one. That way, I'm either pleasantly surprised to be wrong or grimly satisfied to be right.

I loved the way this video dove into analyzing sources, identifying bias in your original sources, and placing events in the larger narrative. So much more what history is about than the "memorize these dates and write them down again" that we so often get in school.

The thing with this particular time period is that the Catholic Church didn’t strictly ordain unmarried men and keep them celibate until the 11th century. So popes having mistresses was not surprising. Perhaps even expected. And even then it wasn’t canon until the 20th century.

The whole of the Pornocracy and the Papal power disputes was just the Papal States effectively "speed running" the previous Roman model of governance, from Kingship, to "Senates", to Federalism to Imperialism in a live, open play of the costs, benefits and troubles of each in about a couple centuries time. Honestly, gotta give the Papacy credit where due; they took the Roman spirit of "Hold the fuck on, I think I just about got these controls figured out!"

Thanks, Blue... all the various chicaneries and power games that went on in the Medieval and Renaissance Papacy/ies make my head spin. I'm glad you're making videos to help us get the basics straightened out. Secular authorities has... kind of always been a thing, until the Papacy ceased to have any geopolitical power. Which is why, Blue - I know you think it's stupid, but please - we need a video about the Guelphs and Ghibellines!

Unironically love it when history turns out to be a bit more boring than we thought. Usually because there's also a bit of more excitement around the history tellers. Also, all knowledge is always good, and it being more boring significantly raises the odds of it being true.

This is an interesting perspective on the medieval papacy i haven't heard before. Granted I know practically nothing about it, but it really helps to understand just how medieval history transitioned us between the time of Rome and the Renaissance. I've long heard the medieval period was not a "dark age" but a progression of the classical period with a comparable amount of innovations to the empires before it and the enlightened states after it, and I hope yall go into more of what exactly happened in this period to provide context to the dark ages narrative.
@zimriel
@zimriel 2 ай бұрын
The mediaeval period was not a dark age. The immediate fall of the western Empire was not a dark age. The Arab conquest era and then the failure of the Carolingians to unite the west, on the other hand, should count (and the Vikings didn't help).
