R rated movies? When I was 11, I, along with my 10 year old cousin, decided to go and try to get in to see The Exorcist. On the way to theater a lady approached us and asked us if we knew where theater that was showing the Exorcist was. We said we were going there so she should follow us. Then we asked her if she could pretend to be out guardian. She didn't want to but we said that we would sit far from her, once we got in. The box office attendant was not happy and told her that the theater would not be responsible for what happened to us. Yes, we were feral kids (the 70s before the Ethan Patz incident) and, yes, we had nightmares for a couple of weeks after watching that movie. Good times!

That's not what an indulgence is. An indulgence is the removal of temporal punishment do to sin. This can be either on earth or in purgatory. An indulgence only functions if you are already absolved of your sins. You do not buy absolution. And they weren't selling absolution either. A plenary indulgence is when all temporal punishment due to sin removed and they are really difficult to gain. You must go to confession, pray for the pope, receive communion, and be completely detached from sin. That last part is the hardest. The problem with some indulgences was that donating money to the building of churches was seen as a pious act. It was also the quickest and easiest way to gain an indulgence. The most I believe people were paying was less than the cost of 3 chickens or something like that. After the council of trent, the church removed all indulgences connected to the donation of money.

You are completely right about the theological definitions about the indulgences. Indulgences had been granted for ages under the sonditions you´ve mentioned, and people generally understood what the limitations and implications were. The issues that arose under Leo were, among other things, that the granting of indulgences were being misrepresented to common people as if the simple donation of money would send their souls directly to heaven. This was definitely NOT supported by the theology that surrounded indulgences, and the demands of churchmen that traveling monks who were collecting in this fashion should be chastised were largely ignored. That was all on Leo and his administration being very out of touch with what was happening outside of the Vatican.
