Popeye, for the Commodore 64. The object of the game is to collect hearts and deliver them to Olive Oyle to keep her 'lovemeter' topped up.
Points are scored for hearts delivered. Bluto, UFO's, witches etc try to stop you. Some hearts are behind locked doors so you've got to find the right key to open the door and get them while others can be grabbed simply by jumping up to get them. Somewhere there's a fruit machine for which you need to collect 'spin' items.
The game boasts a 'clever multidimensional effect' which allows Popeye to go behind the scenery and go through doors.

Fantastic, glad you found the channel! Yeah I played my first Commodore in 1982 and have been going ever since... the greatest buzz of nostalgia is to play all these games once again 😇🕹️👌

This game has a surreal element to it. The familiar characters with weird stuff like UFOs, dragons and giant bugs. I just liked exploring and finding new screens. The lack of music for most of it and permanent night sky gave it a the same eeiry feeling the earlly Dizzy games had.

Likewise, I purely loved the free roaming exploration of games, especially where there is nice locations to discover. I had a similar feeling when playing Don Priestleys other games such as 'Trap Door' and 'Mad Flunky'... some really great locations 😇🕹️👌

As a kid, I Loved this game. Back in 2002, as an adult, I was able to purchase an Atari 5200 that came with this game. After 1 week, I put the Atari & everything that came with it back up on an auction site, that is known from *Bay to *Bay, if you know what I mean. The game really sucked on this Atari 5200, but on the C64, Popeye the arcade version, was more fun!

I loved playing the original Popeye from Parker Bros and still enjoy a quick go whenever I see it in the arcades too. This one is a decent little game if you enjoy other similar titles such as 'Trap Door' or 'Mad Flunky' 😇🕹️👌

I also immediately wanted to write about the Trap Door similarities. However, in real life it would be a real pain if you have melon forearms in combination with macaroni upper arms.

Looks very similar to trap door. Not many games used characters on screen instead of sprites, as you can see it’s much more slow. I remember changing the character set for graphics and trying to fit it to the two colors per character (foreground and background color). You can see this when the character moves over other background characters.

Those larger than life sprites were certainly something. They were a bit too large, tbh. I did enjoy discovering the world in this one. Never figured out what to do. Never finished it either. Doesn't matter. I'll watch a longplay. Nice memory.

While I'm normally an advocate of 2D sprites, a game like this - with its attempted depth - would likely benefit hugely from a 2.5D modern presentation (including the fact it'd probably run smoother too).

@@CheekyCommodoreGamer haha well this is true. Was thinking more the other way around. Can’t think of many that looked passable on the Speccy but really not for the C64 but this one (and Trapdoor for that matter) is good graphically on the C64 and a total achievement (especially for 1986) on the ZX. I’ve still got my original copy from WH Smith’s for my 128K machine I had as a kid.

I have played the original Arcade version of POPEYE on the Commodore 64 back my former elementary school in Myyrmäki, Vantaa (Finland 🇫🇮) in the early 1990's 😹😺👍🕹️. And it was absolutely brilliant 😺👍🕹️. It's amazing, this POPEYE game reminds me of the Piranha games, THE TRAP DOOR and FLUNKY, on my Commodore 64 😹👍🕹️. It may be slow and difficult 😹, but if i ever see it at some flea market or game store, i will consider of buying it and playing it 😸😺👍🕹️.

I never liked this game as a kid. It was slow as molassas and I felt ugly as sin. Especially as I loved the arcade Popeye and it's c64 port, this game felt almost....offensive to me back then. I didn't know Popeye and The Trap Door were programmed by the same man but once you pointed it out I can see it clearly. One can also tell that Trap Door came out later after the programmer had honed his craft as it was far FAR superior to Popeye.
@CheekyCommodoreGamer
@CheekyCommodoreGamer 4 күн бұрын
True... Trap Door definitely seemed more 'polished', however it was still as you say... 'Slow as mollasses' which hampered the fun factor. If only it could have been made just a tickle faster, as mentioned - that would have solved a lot of the issues 😇🕹️👌
