This poplar platter had quite a surprise with it's spalting, I became a nice piece.

Another great piece Al, you certainly transformed a rough looking piece of wood into something beautiful. You have inspired me to be a little more daring with my turning. Today I was kind of a rebel, used a piece of Yew, that had been chainsawed into a rough shape. It had cracks, the bark I left not at the top, but at the bottom, so that when it was completed as a bowl the top wasn’t round but was uneven. Watching your videos has increased my confidence. So thank you, and I will keep watching.

But I have recently found out termites do not like popular so I have built a outside garden door out of it...We will see how it holds up.. Thanks Thomas but to achieve a high gloss on anything with wings better look into a non rub finish. very hard on the knuckles.

Al, what a beautiful piece out of a bit of "scrap" timber! Scrap to anyone but a woodturner! I have never had the "pleasure" of working in poplar in over 40 years of woodworking, and if I didn't know better I would have thought your gouge was blunt! my god the poplar seemed to be extremely hard. Is it normally as hard to work as it looked or was it just a case of and old piece of timber hardened with age? Anyway keep the videos coming, and greetings from England ,Sam Rod Ian

Beautiful piece Al. I kept looking at sand colour as if it was at the bottom half. Looks like a stormy sky over a desert. I noticed you used YG on the bare wood, did you finish it with "shine juice"? I've not had much luck using shellac/sealer before YG. Maybe I will try the next piece without using sealer. Generally I use Triple E & finish with Shellawax. Would appreciate knowing what you used. That's a very interesting piece. I always try to picture what the person is attempting to make and most of the time I'm surprised when I get to see the end product. A very niece piece. Curious when you mounted the nearly finished piece to remove the tenon, how did you re-mount/attach the piece to the lathe? A vacuum chuck or something else?

Sorry I didn't show my method here. 99% of me reverse turning in done between centers. I place a felt pad on my chuck and it's always a sure thingI hope that helps but you can see that method on most of my videos

We have seen this vid before Al, watched it again and really enjoyed it. Having had a go at a square platter, I realise how hard it is to keep the thickness the same across the whole diameter ie, quarter inch. Top skills again Al Kind Regards from Dave & Debbie, from New Zealand.

Debbie. I guess the advice I can give is to use your tool rest as a guide to see and to make sure the back and already cut piece is touching the same spot on the tool rest. If not loosen up the chuck a bit and make adjustments before cutting the inside of the piece.I hope that helps.

I like that you dwelled on careful tightening of your Chuck. I turn smaller pieces, but it's important to cinch each point. That wood has a split personality with those two grains! Cool platter!
