Such sympathetic and beautiful piece of turning. A real credit to you and a fitting tribute to your departed friend. That is a wonderful tribute to your friend Al! I have been into many hobbies since I retired 10 years ago,,,jewelry,metal art,restoring and building fishing rods and now wood turning and every piece I have done has a sentimental meaning to me! I like to think that a little part of me is in every piece I have done and given to my family and friends! You have a little part of you in this piece!!!

Well thank you very much my friend, Yeah this one will remain with me for a long long time. Perhaps every time I get to my lathe and see my modified tool rest LOL. Well maybe my modified Delta USA made tool rest will be more assuring.Thank you again my friend. Take care as well.

Al really enjoyed this turning. Sounds like a rough day with burnt motor/broken tool rest, but you conquered both and did that wood justice. I like your casual nature of grabbing the next tool rest and keep on going. The introspective points where you talk about design changes is super helpful, I find I talk back and say "Al how about" and sometimes you follow through or come up with something I didn't know was possible. Be well.

Thank you very much for such kind words I am far from being even close to some of the best. I just try not to fall into a system that everyone follows. I do what I see in the wood regardless of how pretty the wood might be or not. some of my friends don't dare put what I put on their lathes and I know it might be considered to be somewhat dangerous that is why you must take your time and go as slow as your lathe will go and if your lathe does not go bellow 500RPM I caution you very strongly not to put heavy pieces up.Thanks again my friend. Hi Al, Loved the video and emotion behind the piece. Beautiful sentiment. One question, how did you finish the bottom tenon? The piece seemed too big for a vacuum chuck and too irregular for other jaws. Curious. Thank you again for sharing your work. George
@AlFurtado8 жыл бұрын
Thank you George I am glad you liked it and good question. I don't use a vacuum chuck as I don't have one. It is also to big and irregular for most type of jaws . I turned it over on a soft pad between centers as I do on most of my turnings than just sanded the rest of. I guess I cut it off on the edit on this one Thanks again. Take care Sorry.Thanks again. Take care
@PENFOLD19628 жыл бұрын
Hi Al, Wow that could have been really nasty when your toool rest broke. The exact same thing happened to me with my new lathe! I've since found out that it happens more regular than anyone would think!!! But getting back to your bowl, I really like the 80 grit finish, it looks so much more natural as you say. Plus yours is the first video that I have watched about turning 'Mahogany', the white against the usual mahogany colour looks stunning, plus the worm holes gives that extra bit of of it's very own fascination.
@AlFurtado8 жыл бұрын
WOW I had never seen it or heard of it and it seems to be very common. You would think that they would be require to make the casting on those better quality even if they used cheap stuff on the lathe. I would think they had to do a stress test on that.Thanks again my friend. Take care

Going on 40-50 of your videos, awesome turnings. One concern I have, to turn on or off the lathe, one must reach over the rotating piece. Had you thought of a safer alternative?
@dondavis7697 жыл бұрын
That's incredible that it happens very much at all--I can't believe it happened again to you! Makes you wonder about the QC of some of these Mfgs. what kind of lathe is that you have--I'm thinking we need to get Robust to sponsor you and get you a big HP American Beauty for you to turn on!!
@AlFurtado7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Don. Yeah I know I abuse my lathe beyond what it was designed for but I am sure manufactures should stop making the posts out of cast iron.......Stupid in my opinion. My old Atlas had a cast iron tool rest but was set in a steel post. thinner but stronger. Cast snaps not bend..I agree Robust should give me one of their lathes LOL.........
@dondavis7697 жыл бұрын
Well Al, I am a huge fan, and I would petition Robust to sponsor you! I totally agree that the Mfgs. should only use steel--good quality steel for their tool rests and really other parts of the lathe. One thing I like about Robust is they use stainless steel for their lathe bed rails.
