When you shrink heads with acetone, you should only leave the head for 2 hours in pure acetone. 24hr soaks have a ratio of 70% acetone and 30% water. Hope this helps

For the future, you mixed up your shrinking methods. You can keep the factory paint on if you SLOW shrink, in which you dilute the acetone with water and leave it in for 48 hours. What you did with undiluted acetone was FAST shrink and should only be left in there for 4 hours max. Fast shrinking is tricky because it can easily crack the head like you experienced!

There are some tutorials out there. The larger dolls are thicker plastic, idk if it’s the same kind. Also you want to put the acetone in the container before putting the doll in (the motion of the stuff hitting the head will also remove some of the paint)
@QuietBloom
@QuietBloom 5 жыл бұрын
Add the head should be 100% covered in fluid at all times to support it and make sure all the vinyl is being covered. I use 90% acetone now and the head hardly swells at all, but you still get the shrinking after it dries. The fast swelling is what can damage a head.

As soon as you said you were going to shrink the head, my heart sank. The larger heads are a different type of vinyl that is more prone to damage from acetone, some artists say that the face sort of melts on them when they're cleaning the paint off of it. But luckily, the damage wasn't too too bad, so it could probably be fixed with apoxie sculpt and a heat gun or something similar. And you sculpted an entirely new head, you should try sculpting your own BJD next! I'd love to see the process if you do, and you could even sell the bjds, you'd definitely get buyers! Edit: didn't get to the part where you said you wanted to sculpt your own Bjd when I wrote all that. I'm happy to hear that you want to make a Bjd! I think it's a dream of many doll artists to sculpt their own doll, I definitely want to sculpt one in the future.

I had the same problem with a lips head (it was the same type plastic as the monster high dolls heads) it cracked just like yours, I fixed it by letting it dry out completely (trying to keep the cracks together while it dried) then I used super glue to fill in/keep the cracks together followed by filling cracks that were to visible with clay (I use apoxie sculpt but any air dry clay should work) then sand the heck of any seams from the cracks, if you try this again and have the same problem you can still save the head :)

48 hrs in pure acetone, eep. I usually only go two hours max, checking every half hour for cracking. (And aborting at the first sign of cracks.) Dry the head after 2ish hours, let it shrink for a week or more, and when it's leather-hard I put it back in the acetone (unless it cracked earlier, in which case I don't go back to acetone.) Additionally, completely removing the hair plugs and making sure the ENTIRE head is covered with enough acetone that it will still be completely immersed when it expands will help to prevent cracks from forming due to unequal absorption of the acetone. Dirili has the most in depth acetone shrinking guides around (though not so much on shrinking the really big heads) and I really recommend searching for her website. Now to unpause the video and see the head you make! I'm excited! These kinds of accidents tend to lead to creative results!

Dilute the acetone with water to slow the shrinking process and prevent cracks! Diluting with lots of water will also protect the original face paint :) It's also helpful to remove all the hair from the inside of the head before shrinking so it will shrink more evenly.

I really love this one, I love the fact that you resculpted the head and part of me wants to see what you could do with sculpting the whole doll from scratch but that would be crazy to do because that's one long process! But she is beautiful! Though, I'm not crazy about the resin in the eyes as it kinda makes it look like she's going to cry and obscures those gorgeous green eyes by it not being flat against the doll. She is amazing, though! Respect and props to you!

My best friend showed me your videos and this is incredible!! I love this doll more than the other ones because you made it work on your own and outside of your comfort Zone which is super inspiring! This is how it should be all the time when you try something new! You’re so determined and so talented even when you’re not so comfortable! I’m so proud of you!!! You should be insanely proud of yourself! I’m now a fan! And a new subscriber! I can’t wait to see your next project!! Also- you might wanna change the title of this video cause this was a legit win✨

I've seen the acetone head shrinking trip a couple times now, and every person I've seen use it, the head cracks!🤔 seems quite the tricky technique, but you came back strong. Your doll is beautiful and looks so alive. The Shinto belief states that when we put love and effort into making something we imbue a soul into them

She is so beautiful!!! This is the kind of art you can find in a museum, and the fact that you made it completely from scratch is just unbelievable. The attention to detail and all time and effort put into making this doll makes it truly a masterpiece, great work!

the cracked head cracked me up! XD this is the proof that shit happens even to the best artists^^ i think you underestimated the expansion rate. this size of jar is what i use for Ever after high dolls' head, and you can clearly see that the head was stuck in the jar after the acetone bath. wich is highly not recommended, as the expanded head becomes very fragile. about the make-up, if you want to keep it i think it's better to mix acetone with water, and also not pour the mixture onto the head. another crucial point : 8 hours into pure acetone is way too long! this is the right time for an acetone-water mix that works slower, and is easier to handle. (to shrink a EAH doll's head to the size of a MH one, i let it soak in pure acetone for 2hours max) anyway, this video is humble and instructive, it shows that once we accept our fails, we can move on and find a new way of doing things! :)

She turned out amazing! I guess some bad stuff is actually an opportunity in disguise. :3 I think the anatomy on her head is a little skewed and her head looks vertically stretched, but honestly I don’t criticize you for it, people come in all shapes and sizes and this especially true for dolls. So all in all, I think it looks amazing for your first sculpt and I truly congratulate you on it!

Beyond that I want to say thank you for showing that even the best artists can have things go wrong, and the amazing beauty that comes from continuing on despite the issues. You are as inspirational as you are talented! 😍🥰

To say you are gifted would be doing you a disservice, to call it art would also be wrong as this is so much more. The depth to your work and skill is amazing. It was fascinating watching you to create her and bring her to life. I am actually in awe of how you could make something so shockingly beautiful. I wish you all the best in your work, I can't even imagine what a complete work of your own would be like, I can't wait to see. I'm sorry the project caused you so much heart ache and stress. It just goes to show that through the bad, if we persevere, great things can happen.

I really like the shape of the face you sculpted and she came out looking really good. In fact there are only two things I would have done differently. First, while I know it would have meant yet more work on an already work intensive doll, I think removing the molded drips from her body would have been preferable. Secondly, I think you made the freckles a little too dark, and a bit heavy on the legs and lower torso. I myself have freckles, and they are less prevalent in my legs and lower torso then on my face, back, chest, and arms. They are also only about half as dark is my moles. I know all people are different, but I have also found this true of most other people I know that have freckles.

Julie Baker this is exactly what I was going to say, too! She did such an incredible job on that face, it’s gorgeous 😍 I had the same thought about the drips on the body, and also the freckles. I’m a very freckly girl and I would have to spend every day in the sun naked to have as many freckles as this dolly has 😂
