"Work for free!" We did that in nail school, getting our license that cost money. Pay your nail artist and tip them if you like them too. Also she already worked with Cardi B, so she doesn't need someone just finally getting fame for promo. 😅

Unfortunately the culture in fashion is very much like what Genesis was describing. A lot of times you’re literally expected to work for free, specially in editorial and high fashion. Vogue, for example, pays close to nothing to the small artists that contribute to their editorials because having Vogue on your resume is low-key considered enough, and unfortunately that’s the game we “have to” play to further our careers. It’s absolutely disgusting that that’s the case, but it is the reality. Also, there’s some of that “I had to do it for free, so you should too” vibe in Genesis’ rant, which is very unfortunate, specially in this scenario. 😬🥴

No. You do not do nails for free. You are taught to charge for every client because "promo doesn't pay bills", and this nail artist was already working with Cardi B. She didn't need free promo.

i think chappells speech was good but 1. the stuff about her team is really shady and whether she knows it’s going on or not im glad it’s getting called out. 2. $25k is great but it’s really not a lot to cover healthcare in the U.S. for multiple artists. i at least hope more ppl match it. i have to be honest i dont have anything against Chappell and she seems like a genuinely good person, but i think ppl overhype her as an industry shaker as if countless women haven’t been doing even more to shake up the industry before her. it’s great that she’s brave enough to be so bold in her convictions but sometimes it does kind of come off as all for show imo.

I cannot stand people who have the ideology of this thing was hard for me so it needs to be the same for others. As an aspiring filmmaker who will hopefully start work on some films next year, I firmly disagree with the mentality of Genesis. In the fashion & entertainment industries it is incredibly common & expected to be grateful for any job & not get paid for it. This is not ok & we in the industry need to change it. I know that when I start the work on my films it's going to be difficult because I don't have a massive studio behind me & I can already see people tell me ways I can cut cost is to pay people in exposure. I refuse. I will find other ways. To anyone reading this that works in the fashion/entertainment industry please do your part in changing this if you can. Even if it's small in the grand scheme, it matters
