I dont know how or why you missed this, but at the start of the chapter there was meant to be an opening cinematic which would introduce you to the Smiling Critters and catnap. Basically it was a short animated episode of a show, followed by a news broadcast discussing the Catnap toy and how its sleep breath was causing kids who inhaled it to have nightmares.

I think you're onto something with your interpretation on why mascot horror proves popular with children. Personally, I always saw it as an extension of children's interest in the adult and taboo. Kids are curious, and they're most curious about things that are intentionally hidden from them, especially by adults. Violence, gore, horror, public nuidity, sex; these are all mysteries to kids yet are prevalent enough in pop culture that they still get pieces trickled down to them. They end up knowing enough that they want to know more and explore these topics. And much like _Goosebumps_ , _Are You Afraid of the Dark_ , and _Courage the Cowardly Dog_ before them, mascot horror gives kids an outlet to explore genuine horror experiences tailored for their understanding. It's not so dense and nuanced that if flies over their heads, nor is it so watered down and softened that it becomes trite. It challenges kids in a way that engages them. I remember as a kid being so scared of the original run of _Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark_ and it's stomach-churning illustrations, but at the same time so fascinated that I couldn't put them down. In fact, I'd intentionally seek out those books whenever I could despite my discomfort with them. It felt like peering into some secret, other reality only I was privvy to. I made it my mission to understand and in a way overcome what layed in that space. It was a memorable and joyus experience and lead me to appreciate those books and the stories they told as curated art.

I like how many of the mascot murals/paintings/drawings/decorations/whatever actually have a decent amount of personality to them, like they were drawn by someone who actually _cares._ They don't have the visibly soulless, vacant smiles that a lot of corporate merchandise "art" has. Makes me feel like I would have liked this company if it wasn't doing horrendously evil things.

28:18 I had a talking toy globe as a kid. You could press on the different countries and a cheery male voice would state different facts about countries, play find-the-country games, etc. As the batteries in the toy drained, the cheery man's voice would grow slower, and lower. Eventually, it would sound like a low groan not too dissimilar to the effect in the game here. I think the "low battery = slow and low playback" is an effect that more horror media could get some use out of.

The real issue I have with poppy playtime isn't an issue with the game itself- It's the way it (albeit partially by design) became associated with actual children's content. Not just the shady practices of the bootleg merch for children, produced by companies wanting in on the popularity--- But more-so the fact that parents these days will often just plop an ipad in front of their children (instead of a babysitter? ugh) and they'll eventually be shown horror content, because the algorithms eat that stuff up. 'Huggy wuggy sonic vs Banban scary blue fnaf in real life' videos are the modern day Teletubbies. Purely the existence of this game is actively killing off children's braincells, but not much the developers can do. Sorry if any of this is bad takes, I'm unironically off my meds c:

i think the cutouts of the smiling critters all are essentially grave markers, and give insight on how they died. bubba was at the enterance, along with kickin. kickin said that he wanted you to come with him outside, and then violent screaming as he left. i think that kickin convinced bubba to try and escape, and make it all the way over there before catnap killed him first, bubba then making it a bit farther, before catnap cornered him. at that point he tried to appeal to capnap, saying that he remembered when he was nice, and when things were good, and catnap killed him mid sentence. picky seems to have eaten the bodys of her friends, at least the ones that would have been recoverable, that being bubba kickin and crafty, and most likely one of three things happened. after this she couldn't find any more food and starved to death in home sweet home, catnap got mad and wouldn't let her have any food after she ate their former friends, or catnap got mad and proceeded to kill her. hoppy was after the school and right next to a catwalk into the caverns, hoppy most likely completely broke down after everything that happened, and committed suicide via jumping off the catwalk her cutout is next too. bobby was at the entrance to playhouse, catnaps home. seems to have gotten extremely attached to catnap, and tried to follow him everywhere he went. catnap did not reciprocate and eventually let bobby die in the maze of the playhouse, getting lost inside and then consumed by the smaller ones. interestingly, hers didn't have a scream, which indicates an even worse fate: she never died and is still alive, lost somewhere in the maze of the playhouse never to find a way out. dogday was of course at the place near where he finally lost you, and where he died. this time the cutout is adressing the player, telling them to run, to leave, and that they couldn't stay, and then died when he was eaten alive from the inside out. the prolonged screaming indicates that he may have even still be alive while chasing the player in some capacity, but his body taken over. crafty was in the councilors office, and most likely ended up going insane to some capacity after the hour of joy, and eventually became enraged at someone else, trying to take more "red paint" from them and attacked. the very short scream indicates this attack was.. *extremely* unsuccessful, possibly against catnap.

In regards to marketing toys towards kids, yet the game itself not really seeming like it's made for kids. This isn't the first time something like this happened. All throughout the 80s, there were toys, video games, candy, and even cartoons made based off of R-Rated movies such as Terminator, Rambo, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc. So make of it that you will, but it shows that this isn't an uncommon practice. Poppy being shown to actually be good, and wanting to go after the prototype for killing those people is a great change of pace on the main star of Mascot horror. (Except for Glamrock Freddy in Security Breach, and despite the fact that Huggy Wuggy is advertised more as the mascot of the series, despite the fact that the original only appeared once.) I hope they don't pull a whole, "She used you to get to the prototype, and become a part of him." trope. As for Ollie's character, he seems like an interesting character with the way he talks like a kid would on an educational show. Only thing I'm worried about is if the devs try to pull a Ruin on us by having Ollie be revealed to actually be the prototype without even Poppy being aware. They already showed that the prototype is capable of changing his voice to various other ones. Perhaps he's actually either a kid that is the child of some employees that had hid for a bit, before being found and killed. Or maybe he's something like Miss Delight, in that he was a toy designed to look like a kid to act as someone for the orphans to look up to, while no adults were around.
@artzie10706 ай бұрын
literally what i was thinking about ollie
@mr.kittysavestheworld6954 ай бұрын
I personally subscribe to the theory that Ollie IS the toy phone, or more accurately, he's not a 'person,' but rather part of the facility's systems somehow, like a GLaDOS kind of deal, and the phone being an internal communication line makes Ollie the toy phone by extension. (Or, I guess, the phone is a part of Ollie.) It would perfectly explain how Ollie inexplicably _always_ knows exactly where we are and what we're doing, as if he's watching us constantly, and how he's able to manipulate systems like the pneumatic transport tubes regardless of their location. The only time Ollie is out of the loop is when we're in isolated areas heavily under the control of other entities, like with the school and Miss Delight.

Man I heard that radio and said outloud 'they're doing a PT'. It wasn't quite a carbon copy, of course, but hell if it weren't solid stuff. Just a little suggestion for the future, if you ever find your recording software going to hell during a rather important cutscene, you may wish to consider just finding a clip of it and inserting it into the video. Anyway. Seems pretty solid! I'm quite impressed with it. Asides from the copious jank it's quite a solid horror experience. The restraint is what was most surprising. The effective atmosphere. It almost feels like there isn't ENOUGH big scary monster go ooga booga at you so much of the game is just solid atmosphere. Like, I can see how a small indie studio might take 2 years to make this. That CRT slaughter scene was phenomenal. Though... you'd think they'd have a better hand on the bugs and jank after two years, and with how popular this has got, you'd think they'd have the resources too. Well. It's an improvement. And I guess that's good enough. Next one better not take two years.

This game was excellent, I was dreading every moment I played it. For me though, the boss fight at the end soured the experience significantly. It's still a good game overall... but that finale was so, SO frustrating. They really need to give you more time to turn on the steam pipes (especially at the last 30 seconds or so of the countdown, where you have maybe 7-8 seconds to react to catnap coming once he appears), or refine the grab pak mechanics so that you can switch hands faster and so that your hand actually goes where you aim it. I hate dieing to janky mechanics.

2:42:37 So the reasoning could be due to some players not being as aware of the tutorial for the boss fight and skipping straight past it without even paying attention.. Markiplier did do this and I think Jacksepticeye also had issues with it if I remember correctly.. Now although it may say I am sticking up for the devs with this I wanna say that isnt the case, I really think they could have done this fight a little better in easing the player into the experience instead of just throwing words up on a screen where some players may miss because some players would prefer to just play instead of reading.. If they made it where Ollie or Poppy was telling you what to do that would have been much better atleast.. The mechanics of the boss fight themselve werent bad though, I do like how it played out and will have to say its just the lead up for it..

This chapter was definetly a step in the right direction. Hopefully, this chapter will make the franchise lose some of its infamy for being a fan favorite among kids, and gain more of a mature audience.

Let's hope so. The first chapter was a legit cash grab, the second chapter improved itself..yet was way too kid friendly..yet Chapter 3 is an insane improvement

Strongly doubt it, a lot of the 'horror' is just ripping off other games and filling hallways with blood and wallscrawl reading 'HELP' and 'RUN'. they just upgraded from 10 year olds to 14 year olds

So I’m genuinely curious, you brought up the moral grey area that the game’s creator exists in specifically to say that you’re separating the art from the artist and will be disregarding it, but then you also bring up the morality of marketing children’s toys to kids from a game not made for kids. So what’s the difference?
