The factory closed in 1995 when we play it's ten years later so 2005 that's 3 years of silence before we start getting the letters that eventually bring us back for them to find out and read the book. My theory is that even though it had been ten years the staff never left and continued their experiments that eventually led to what happened in the main game.

It's the writers job to make a coherent and interesting story for their games... though I doubt devs seriously bother clearing EVERYTHING they do with the writers to make sure it's all "Lore approved". That was the guard's book, the fabric closed "temporarily" so they hired one, after all the subsidiaries eventually went bankrupt it was finally abandoned in the 2000's. It's not a perfect patch but oh well 😋
