Poppy is actually her childhood nickname and when she first started doing music she was doing it under "That Poppy". Her earliest stuff was mostly acoustic covers of alternative tracks but her career really took off from her weird KZbin channel where she played a character that was basically an AI programmed to be a pop star, a satirical take on the industry. The music she was making at that time was very pop / electronic to go along with the character, filled with cheesy lyrics and strange music videos. Poppy wanted to start including more of her own personal influences so the last 3 or 4 songs on her 2nd album Am I A Girl get progressively heavier. Her 3rd album I Disagree (arguably her best or at least most defining work) is a full-on metal influenced, experimental industrial album which earned her a Grammy nom for the single BLOODMONEY (worth reacting to). Since then she's toned down the character stuff but will often use it as a way to keep her personal and professional life separate, so she'll bring it out in interviews etc to keep some mystery about her which is cool in today's social media obsessed society where we know what every celebrity had for breakfast. Her 4th album was more grunge/rock and her 5th was a mix of dark electronica and industrial. Her latest is mostly metalcore with a slice of pop, and definitely her heaviest alongside the EP she released for WWE NXT called EAT. Poppy calls herself "post-genre" because she is always mixing it up and dabbling in every kind of sound, she's an extremely interesting and diverse artist and worth checking out more because it's all so different.

Definitely check out more Poppy! She's an endlessly interesting artist imo! She still does some synthpop (crystallized)/industrial pop (church outfit), and total genre-fu*ked stuff. Nothing and The Center's Falling Out are other heavy ones from Negative Spaces. Great album, even the interludes. Subscribed!
