I remember that year I spent living in the UK. Food is so cheap in the UK :). I'm from Sweden, and I would starve if I did that challenge here.

£5 WEEKLY FOOD SHOP // Living on £1 a Day for 5 Days (Day 1) 0123am 2.11.23 no offence, but you can afford to be frugal ie: you know you wont be going without... after you have experimented on how best to live on a limited budget yer back to what you know. that said, the plebs giving it woe is me and then requesting travel expense for their cars kindda takes the proverbial pish... the look of bemusement at these cheeky effers is pretty much astounding... anyhow; no one wants to live like that, that's for sure...

Just a couple of ideas to give you some variety - I would add a spoonful of your peanut butter the next time you make your pasta to make sort of a satay sauce, along with some of your beans chopped up, think that would be good. Pity you couldn't manage an onion in your budget, that would have helped to add a lot of flavour to your meals. :( Definitely add the frozen veg when cooking your pasta in the last few minutes, the just drain and rinse together. I agree that some frozen veg can be a little strange and not as good as fresh but the bag you bought I think would be ok, frozen peas, beans and corn are always about the same as fresh, the only thing that wouldn't be quite as good would be the frozen carrots but personally I find when they're cut lengthways like the ones you have they taste better than the round carrots with the ridges in them, sounds strange but is true! :)

Always learning the satay sauce is such a good shout! Think if i did think again, I might try rice instead of pasta and then could make a few different curry style dishes and incorporate peanut butter 😋 I did end up using half an onion on day 2 for my soup (I didn’t want to waste it as I opened before the challenge) and I think that with the stock cube definitely helped flavour wise! And that’s interesting to know with the frozen veg... I think I’m mostly just not a big pea/sweet corn fan so I think that’s what puts me off 😂

@@PoppyBarr Yes, I probably would have opted for rice over pasta too, especially in hindsight now that you're not liking the brand you bought. I wouldn't have expected them to be much different from one store to the other either so that's interesting, not a good week to find that out though unfortunately. :( Now that you've explained that you don't like peas or sweetcorn I can understand you not liking the frozen veg, maybe you should have gone with another vegetable like broccoli or cauliflower instead? All a learning experience though, I know what I bought the first time doing this compared to what I look for now has changed a lot, you sort of need to find out the things you don't like in order to improve the next time around though. Just one other afterthought which you may or may not like the idea of which is completely fine, but I wanted to mention that the porridge oats can be your friend in ways you may not have thought of, by actually using it as a grain and cooking it in a savoury dish instead of needing to have it sweet. So you could, if you're game, try making a risotto with the porridge oats and you could use the rest of your soup as the risotto base to give the flavour. Just cook it the same way you would cook a rice risotto but with oats instead. If you want to check out the Domestic Geek's channel she has some savoury oat recipes so you can see what I mean for yourself. Best of luck! :)

Yeah I always assume pasta will be the same but think I must have just got a dodgy packet! Ideally wanted some different veg, but annoyingly they were 99p and these were 79p so that’s why I chose them in the end. Oooh savoury oats is a great idea - if I do this challenge again I will definitely give that a go!!

Love that you're doing this, better late than never, always a good experience! This challenge actually originated from Oaktree here in Australia, I think they are based in Sydney but may be incorrect with that, but it started in Australia and has then taken off in other countries as well which is great to get more awareness out there! :) I think it's good for people to experience this first hand, even as you said if it is just a small taste of it so perhaps is better done long term, but still better than just simply throwing money at the problem and then going about your day with no further thought on the matter. I was going to do this challenge this year for Live Below The Line however it got cancelled due to Covid, shame as the need is there more than ever during this time really! All the best, will be interested to see how you get on. :)

Always learning Oooh thanks for letting me know!! I’ll have a look into Oaktree this afternoon and will add some links to the description so I’m sending people to the right place 😊 definitely good that the awareness is spreading!! And that’s such a shame with it being cancelled 😔 I guess you could always do it separate to the organisation but still annoying! Thank you for such a lovely comment 🤗

Annemarie Jones I think it was by about 5p! Did think about it but as I didn’t want to also pick up spices/seasoning, I figured bolognese was a better shout! 😊
