My gosh….they are practically giving away food at your grocery store. I couldn’t even buy a can of those tomatoes for the whole of your daily budget here in San Francisco. I watched so many of Mr Shrimps videos and have the same reaction. Your grocery stores have such incredible bargains for those who put in the effort. There are no such bargains in my part of California.

Even when I see videos of people shopping in places such as Trader Joe's (which I believe is operated by Aldi?) I'm shocked at how much food can be somewhere like California

well let me put it this way, the US median salary is around 70k USD, In UK, the median salary is just shy of 35k USD, rent comes at about the same, although can vary depending on the place you live. as US, when you think it about it this way, the food prices (non reduced) is not very different compared to US. If you were to have a remote job, as an american living in UK, sure, your salary would go a long way, but from the perspective of a british national living, and earning their wages based on UK monthly income, expenses and such would amount to a great deal. Thats the key thing you need to remember when watching priced based sort of videos on youtube,

Think about it like this, If you were to move to say i dont know, africa, (non popular area) your US salary would make you live a queen lifestyle. but if you were to switch from a remote job, to a job based on the salary in Africa, you'd eventually be forced into having the same sort of lifestyle you used to have in US

@@valy673 In my country (Slovakia), the annual median salary is about 15 000 euros (1300 per month) and the food prices are terrible, for the price of 1,37 pounds which is about 1,5 euro I would be able to buy only the bread / only the can of tomatoes / only the salad.... And even if some item is reduced because of best by date, it is never a bargain like in this video, maybe like 30% off... And rent in capital is expensive as hell (700 euro for 60 square meter)... We are fucked...

Really interesting! The reduced price chicken was an amazing source of protein that would last for more than a day. Maybe making a stock from the bones and some of the left over veg/salad might have helped your evening meal but it does use extra energy to produce. I subscribe to Atomic Shrimp as well as you and enjoy watching both of you tackle these challenges. Thanks for posting, look forward to the next, whatever it may be! 👍👏👏👏👏

I'm in the upper midwest of US. Looking at the prices of your reduced groceries makes me want to immediately move. A reduced, close to expiration raw chicken would still cost $6.00 here. A very small (less than 2lb) rotisserie chicken runs $4.99 at Wal-Mart, and they don't mark them down at the end of the day. Cheapest bread available is at Dollar tree and costs $1.25 - not reduced even if rock hard dry. Learning a lot from your videos.
@harrywalbyoff2 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Interesting to read, usually I'd expect a rotisserie chicken to be slightly more than that, but if you're lucky enough to find a reduced, raw chicken it's usually around £2 I reckon! Bread, however, can be very cheap. I'd say if I'm really splashing out on the week's loaf then I'm spending about £1.50!!
@emilyg1539 Жыл бұрын
I'm in Texas and a rotisserie chicken is about $7.99 now- raw whole chicken actually more expensive. A loaf bread is about $3.00-4.00. Whole-grain bread is much more expensive. I do realize that in the UK you pay a lot more for gas than we do, but man is your food cheap!@@harrywalbyoff2
@nunnabeeswax2397 Жыл бұрын
@@emilyg1539Costco is still $4.99 for a rotisserie chicken and I believe Aldi has bread for 88 cents. If you got a HEB near you they often have some good prices on their meats when they are on sale.

Wow! you actually got super lucky with that haul! the vegetables with/without seasoning for 10p each is unreal, the 30p chicken is insane!! there's 3 meals in the chicken for sure. nice cuts for a roast or casserole, peel offs for curry, and boil the bones and tiny bits down for broth.

I might suggest chicken marengo for the peel offs if you don't like curry. pile up the rice and the sauce is tomato base and taragon.very nice.

Hope the chicken bones were boiled later for a stock. Could have taken the raw skin off, baked it for cracklings (aka chicharrones) for a crunchy element and it'd still give you the fat drippings. The two end slices of bread cooked in the oven or skillet may not have gotten as soggy as the inner slice.
@harrywalbyoff2 Жыл бұрын
You'll be glad to know that the chicken bones did eventually get used for stock, I like to freeze them until I have enough to make a batch, then freeze into ice cube trays! Using the ends may have been a good idea, but I think the big thing there was just that they needed to be cooked longer and slower. Also, I hadn't heard of the dish chicharrones before and it looks delicious so thanks for mentioning that :)
