In this video, we take a look at mods you might want to consider avoiding or deleting if you have them already installed. They include outdated mods or some that outtright make your game unstable. I also recommend alternatives for those that have them and I hope this guide helps you have a cleaner mod list!

To clarify - This video is my opinion. The mods in the video are not bad and will most likely not break your game. I simply believe there are better alternatives for most of them. For FNIS - FNIS has creature support whereas Nemesis doesn't. If you want creature animations, you should keep FNIS or consider using Pandora. However, if you only want to focus on player/NPC animations, Nemesis or Pandora should be your go-to. For Alternate Start - I still use Alternate Start and it's great! For survival mods - Sunhelm is purely my mod of choice given its simplicity. There is nothing wrong with the other mods. For NPC mods - I recommend you try them and see if they work for yourself. Mod authors put a lot of work in these mods and I don't want to out anyone or their work down. I suggest you try the mods you want to try and see if they work for yourself. You might not encounter the issues I said in the video. Every mod list is different. :)

The reason the community has beef with arthmoor is due to his incredibly anti-Community stance regarding the unofficial Skyrim special edition patch. He now only supports the version of his patch designed for bethesda's latest official update and only supports mods that are compatible with bethesda's official update . He has actively gone out of his way to remove or delete all older versions of the patch meaning there's no technically legal way for users on older versions of the game such as the pre-anniversary and pre-creation versions to get the unofficial patch which many mods that are beloved by the community required to run. If asked about older versions of The Unofficial patch he will actively block or delete the comment or even ban the user and will often reply with something condescending like "the game is old move on abandon your old mods that are not compatible with my patch" and offers no support to the community. Also in recent years he has asked a few other creators such as juicehead to delete their channels for one reason or another. He's become a rather toxic individual which is why I now back up older versions of his patch in remove all other mods by him from my load order. Same goes for Fallout 4
@Cwronaga216

@@alexwalters35 there's actually a lot of reasons to not be on the latest version of Skyrim. First of all most people never asked for these updates yet every time they do they introduce new bugs new issues poorly integrated DLCs and of course breaks the script extender which most modern mods rely on. Not to mention some of the best mods on the Nexus are from Mod authors that have since stepped away from the community usually due to things like bethesda's updates and there haven't been modern Alternatives produced by other mod authors. Also when the game updates if you had any mod that was specific to the version of the game you were playing on before you now have to wait to continue with your load order for that mod author to update which may or may not ever occur. So it is always best to stick to whatever version of the game provides the best compatibility for your specific load order. I stick with the original anniversary edition patch because I had no interest in the creations and there are many brilliant mods that have since reintegrated or rebalanced the AE content . As for Fallout 4 the modding Community is nowhere near as large and robust and due to previous issues with Bethesda in the past many mod authors have left so the only way to get access to many of the game's great mods is to stick to the version that was stable for years prior to the Next Gen update which has introduced a slew of new problems. But it really just comes down to what your load order that you want to use requires as there may be some features you want in your game that are only available for a mod for a specific version and you as a player should not be required to abandon or miss out on the experience you want with your game because one specific mod author is gatekeeping the community or because Bethesda keeps trying to squeeze money out of a decade ish old game. You should always use whatever version of the game is best for the load order you are trying to create so luckily it is very easy to download specific game versions and prevent updates using steam console and there are plenty of ways to find older versions of The Unofficial patch it is important for the bug fixes it provides through archived links that bypass the authors attempts to hide them

The man is toxic and full of himself, yes. But honestly, there is no reason to use an older version of USSEP, since the latest version is compatible with all versions of the game. The problem is that Arthmoor doesn't explain that because that seems to be beneath him. Also, it is the community's fault, since no one has come up with something that competes with USSEP. In a way, we got what we deserved with him.

To reprise a comment I made last week about a JSON library, there is such a thing as mature, stable code that doesn't need to be updated. Just because a mod hasn't had an update in several years doesn't mean it is broken, it is often preferable to a newer mod that is constantly being updated to fix bugs.
@ToaOnichu

I think I stopped tracking or using a couple mods precisely because they kept getting updated practically every single day--maybe even multiple times per day. Also because of this tendency, I'm pretty wary about installing a mod on its release date, especially if the mod is a big one.

2:18 I wouldn't really say that Campfire/Frostfall/Last Seed are going to risk damaging your save or computer more than any other set of mods, they're just a little more mechanically complex is all. They're also all just as configurable as Sunhelm, and have a great amount of mod support. The only area they're kinda lacking in is the UI department, but you can fix that yourself using and configuring the iWantStatusBars mod. If you want to use Sunhelm or Starfrost or CC Survival mode, more power to you. But there's no reason to warn people away from older or more complex mods in doing so.

@@NarivaTV I actually prefer iNeed not going to lie. Mostly because I tried Sunhelm some time back and I'm not sure if this is still a thing at that time it integrated itself into the CC Survival mode. Meaning, when you tried to uninstall it then it would cause issues with your game requiring a full reinstall and clean to remove it. Now that might have changed when I tried it but it's one reason I started to curse that mod and went back to iNeed. Which is fine because I have done many playthrough's with it without issue.

I really enjoy your videos as always a lot of information that I like to look for and update my game till it breaks haha. I am trying not to do a lot now since I really want to play the game with my 1300 plus plugins! There were a few mods I still use even though people tend to have issues. Combat Gameplay overhaul is one of them. I have been using it since I first got it and never had a problem with it. I guess its because I dont play 3rd person and many of the mods like MCO I dont use and generally use Precision with it and Archery gameplay overhaul with locational damage in the mix. Also a bunch of mods that change how armour works. I used to use True Armour but now I use Know your enemy 2. OBIS is the other mod I love using, adding more enemies to my game is always great. I use Sunhelm but with the cold features from Frostfall. Hunterborn and campfire are also mods I use for my survival additions to my list. Skills of Skyrim is pretty good but I dont use the newer version since it doenst work with Hungerborn anymore. As always thank you for making these videos. Its great to listen to as I paint my minis and have something to focus on. AR

Thanks for the vid - excellent points all around! Just a note about Book 'Em, it's not compatible with any mod that alters book weights or book names, like Better Skill and Quest Books Names SE. Also, the author is running game version 1.6.640 and has explicitly stated he will not update beyond that game version, nor will he support any issues with his mod on other game versions. Also, if anyone is interested in this mod, follow the link in this video. For some reason the mod won't show if you search on Nexus by its name.

I don't get the issue with Northern Roads. Yes, it requires a lot of patches, which kinda makes sense since it affects EVERY road in Skyrim, but most of the patches are nicely bundeled and I haven't had any issues at all using it along with several city expansion mods and Lux Via. The only thing that might be an issue is NGIO, but then again, recreating grass cache is a good thing to do in general if you have a lot of mods that add objects in the world..

In this day and age of skyrim modding you just need to try avoiding mixing systems that accomplish the same thing, for example if your installing animation mods you have to pick FNIS or nemesis. You can technically get them working together but it's not a good idea so you should pick old and a larger selection or new and a smaller collection.

Sunhelm instead of Frostfall? Yeah no, I just played over 20 hours with SunHelm, and while I enjoy the food, drink and sleep aspect, the "cold" side felt so lackluster, I was standing outside in a storm for HOURS before i even got the "Cold: Chilly" effect and this was with already tuned cold settings It is good for the rest, but specifically for the cold side it is just lackluster. I recommend disabling the cold on SunHelm, and using frostfall alongside it

A big note on MCO, DMCO, etc. At some point while installing these mods and their dependencies on the latest version of SSE, you will run into a problem: Animation Motion Revolution, which has not been updated in a while, has no comment from the author either and appears to have been abandoned with support only up to several patches ago. However, despite this, AMR works perfectly fine on 1.6.1170, allowing dodges and most custom MCO movesets to function correctly. Unfortunately to find this out you have to install it just hoping that its own description is wrong (which it is) or scroll past a page of comments begging the author to update it to find the one where somebody says the mod still works fine on every version up to 1.6.11xx. Also I got clickbaited by Northern Roads in the thumbnail. I already avoid city overhauls because my current install is on Deck and I don't think I could maintain a stable framerate with those AND ENB (tried to live without it, can't), but even dirty edits from other mods cause issues like gaps in the land. Irritating that it's 2024 and so many mods still have dirty edits in the first place.

Yeah NR is a real nice mod, bu also a huge PITA and needs tons of patches, if you change anything ever so sligthly and it gets really nasty when you then want to combine it with the entire LUX suite and stuff, not to mention city expansions, outskirts and home/villagemods and so on... Pi-Cho ENB is still my goto with Azurite weathers, its just so...yummy.

@@wolfwilkopter2231 How does pi-cho compare to silent horizons in terms of performance? Unfortunately Skyrim is not one of thise games that runs surprisingly well on Deck, but Silent Horizons hasn't hurt my framerate too badly. Hey I am glad you made this avoid mod list because nobody else will. He is correct with almost all of these. The fact of it is is that most mods that haven’t been updated since 2022 need an update to work at their best. No mod author wants to put a “outdated” or “play at your own risk warning” on a mod they spent many hours making. I literally started making my own list of mods to avoid because it’s so hard to find anybody online talking about popular mods that used to be great but need to be avoided now. Thank you and take the hate from the fools and use it to grow. you’ve got a permanent sub from me.

Apart from the age comments (older player here. :P ), thank you for this list. Its been a couple of years since I've played. . .and i'm starting to feel the itch again, so will probably set things up again. Buuuut. . .any time I leave the game for awhile, it always means a massive pain to update my mods list. Sounds like it's time to dump all my mods and start building a fresh list. I use/have used a LOT of the mods you mention here, so it's good to have some updated recommendations. Any time I can simplify the mod list, keep the mods simple and lightweight - I like that - as long as I get the functionality I like. Open Cities is one I had to stop using ages ago, though. It truly was a compatibility nightmare. -.- Which sucked, but, yeah. Better to have a loading screen than all the troubles and lost NPCs falling below the city it caused. There are a few mods I can't really do without, but most of them can be dumped for newer, lighter weight versions.
