Super, splendid, spiffing. What a wonderful video!!! Pater is beautiful, a pillar of the aesthetic movement. Ruskin's prose is palpable, it is what I imagine a fine Burgundy would taste like if it were in written form. I'm with you on the Conan Doyle thing. I've not read much of his other work except for Brigadier Gérard. However, I am smitten with Sherlock. Some very popular authors in their day were: Catherine Gore William Black (thought to be as good as Thackery!) and Ouida You might particularly be interested in Mary Kingsley. She wrote Travels in West Africa and I really want to read this one soon. Love your channel ❤

I hope so too! After seeing you get some new 5 stars that were lesser known, I feel like there have to be so many more great books out there!

I've read two William Harrison Ainsworth books in the past two months. Windsor Castle (I talked about this book in Kate's collaborative video) and Old St. Paul's. I enjoyed them both but Old St. Paul's was my favourite. Set in London in 1665 and 1666. I talk about it more in my Victober Week 2 Wrap Up video. I will definitely be on the look-out for more by Ainsworth.

I hope you're enjoying Uncle Silas! I read it last year and really enjoyed it. I love his short stories, especially Schalken The Painter which is my favorite shorter story of all time, so I had to check out his novels. I absolutely loved the beginning of Silas and the atmosphere, can't wait to try some more! Hope you enjoy!

I haven’t quite finished it, but I’m close enough to the end that I can say Lancashire Witches is a lot of fun! The characterization for a lot of the characters is not great and the plot doesn’t flow super well, but his appreciation for the history is tangible and the supernatural aspects are on point!

I read The Last Days of Pompeii. I remember really liking it but I haven’t read anything else by the author. It's interesting that two popular books the year of Dracula's publication were Egyptian inspired since Stoker also published an Egyptian inspired book six years later. For the popular book prompt this year I'm reading The Heir of Redclyffe by Charlotte M Yonge.

Ruskin was certainly a Victorian man, just by looking at his time of birth and death, though he is more of an example of Victorian repression than his queen was.

I read a biography of Ainsworth last year which was really interesting as it explained how he fell out favor during his own lifetime. I tried reading some of his work but didn't like the style and themes.

Oh, I’ll have to check that bio out!

@@jenniferbrooks It is by Stephen Carver, a very nice chap with a twitter account. I asked him which of Ainsworth's books he would recommend to start with, but sadly I just didn't like any of them.
