I noticed in my family that nobody had kids. When I go to family gatherings, there are zero children. Everyone is in their 30's - 80's and there are no children at all.

How many of your generation are there? Is it you and like three cousins? So like four of the grandkids did not have children yet? I’m 34 years old, and I have 13 cousins on one side of my family, ranging in age from 26 to 46…and only seven of us have had children. Almost exactly half of us don’t have children.

@derek4412 On my mom's side of the family, my grandparents had 3 children: A son (my uncle), then my mom, then another daughter (my aunt). My uncle had two sons who never had kids. My aunt had a daughter who never had kids. My mom had me and my two sisters, who never had kids. On my dad's side of the family my grandparents had 6 kids, 5 sons (my 4 uncles and my dad), and 1 daughter (my aunt). The oldest uncle had a daughter and a son (neither of them had kids). The next uncle had 3 sons (none of them had kids). Then there's my father who had me and my sisters (we had no kids), then there's my aunt who had 2 sons and a daughter (none of them had kids), then there's my twin uncles, one of them had a daughter (who had no kids), and the other uncle never had kids. That's everyone that I know of. So the youngest person in my family is in their twenties. There's no little kids or babies in the whole family. * Oh yeah, almost forgot. There's also some step siblings, step cousins or whatever you call it when a parent, aunt, or uncle remarried a new partner who had kids of their own already, so I've got a couple of those, but they're all middle aged and none of them had kids either. If you ask the men in my family if they are planning on ever having kids the most common answer is "I can't afford it." And if you ask the women in my family, the most common answer is "I have no interest in having kids." Although I haven't asked everyone. And there are quite a few people in my family who are adults that have never even been in a relationship before.

I'm 37, no kids. Why: because I was encouraged to go into education, and even then all my jobs have been very low paying, and I have no hope of ever buying a house. No house means no stability and so no kids. I can't explain to you how all my life I've felt the dread of not having enough resources and so when people say "poverty increases birth rates", I scoff. I'm not going to have a kid if I'm even poorer than I am now.

Or women can just give birth to fewer males......this myth that every man deserves a woman and children is bs. In the wild, most males die virgins.....that's how it should be with human males.....not every male is worthy of passing his genes on and giving every man a child only weakens the gene pool....we have a world full of idiots because of this crap.....realistically speaking, we only need a few males to keep it going...so polygamy might be the answer but the males would not be the leaders, they would be just breeders for women. men are horrible leaders.

@WilliamSantos-cv8rr
@WilliamSantos-cv8rr 3 күн бұрын
no, the prices will not drop. Those are plain stupid assumptions. You can simply check up the situation on declining regions of countries. Some houses, buildings, suburbs or entire towns are left to rot, meanwhile new houses and even maintaining houses become more expensive, way more expensive. Also, the infrastructure deteriorates everywhere except in few cities where the youth goes, and in these cities where the Youth gather together the prices go through the roof. Check Tokyo, Seoul, Rome.
@macmcleod1188
@macmcleod1188 3 күн бұрын
@WilliamSantos-cv8rr that's not the kind of population decline we're talking about. We're talking about a drop of 50 to 66% over 40 years. The reason all this population decline hysteria is being pushed is because owners of real estate and businesses are counting on the sustained value of scarce property and the continued growth of business sales. The best option is simply to let the population drop back to healthy levels. About 3 billion. Of course people at the very top are pursuing "accelerationism.". They're looking for a much lower level.

I also notice that I have rarely if ever, in the dozens of videos I've seen on the topic, seen people of young, child bearing age included in the conversation. We live in a post-scarcity world in the west. When women don't NEED men, but just WANT men, their standards can raise. Now their standards are higher but we put no real effort into improving the status of men. We end up with a bunch of men that the women don't want.

Population “collapse” sounds very scary…. But surely, there’s got to be some benefits??? Eg More space for everyone else?? Less overcrowding! This idea that we have to continuously breed - using all the resources must be unsustainable? Has certain places who only prefer boys (China, India) contributed to this? Women have high standards and all these males aren’t meeting them 🤔 to increase a population drastically, people are going to have to prefer girl children to boys. I’m not sure China or India are ready for that…

In past when only 2 of 6 children became adult only high fertile men who had 10+ kids have about 2-3 adult sons and low fertile men had 0 or 1 adult son, so in every generation majority adult man was sons of high fertile fathers. But when mortality rate decline and now high fertile man has 1 son and low fertile man 0 or 1 son population, so it create deficit of high fertile men in population and low birth rate. So in young age woman need have child from high fertile man and then get married with low fertile man and have with him common 1 children. So fertility rate will be 2,1 children per woman. And now fertility rate 1,4 because woman in 20s rare have children from high fertile man out wedlock.

Current population collapse is fatal, because its root cause is none other than the civilization advancement itself. If it is economy based, culture based, religion based, or social structure based, we would not see the birth rate drop in all regions across the globe. Modern civilization has "down graded" reproduction from the animal instinct, namely, the sole purpose of the life with immeasurable value, to just one type of life style among many others, subject to cost-benefit evaluation. Since civilization cannot retrack, there is no pathway for birth rate recovery.

I can tell you, as a woman, I would have had more than the 4 I had if the support systems would have been there. My husband left and I had 4 kids to support and work full time supporting them by my self. He was successful, never had additional children, and did not support. Hence, no more children. Child care was so expensive I was barely able to keep above water. Outside support is not socially supported or incentivized. Empirical studies over many countries and social classes have shown that a large percentage of men will not support their own children without fight and struggle after they leave, or after the start of taking for granted the labor requirements. In polygamy in the past not only does the man provide for his wife but he provided for her family too. That would make sense because the offspring had the support of the wives families to help with the burdens hence increasing the likelihood of survival of offspring. Today this is true as well. It may be easy to say that it’s the woman’s fault or to blame the woman for the way children or relationship turns out, but if the support is there the woman can do what the labor of child upbringing entails. If men want to do this labor and all it entails I’m all for it. Cooking cleaning emotional caretaking learning new things about being a parent or partner every day putting their wants and needs last in the family dynamic schedules of each and every child with very different needs taking time off work and putting work goals last behind everyone else’s needs not getting the social acclaim or respect that one gets from work or sports I’m all game with that!! I find very few men able to glean self empowerment from the joys of that form of daily labor on duty for 24 hours a day 365 days a year. I would 100% be on board with having 20 more children if I was to carry them, nurse them, then provide the financial stability if I could find a man like that!!!!!!!

It's time to propose some workable solutions: One problem is everyone's responsibility so henceforth my solution: 1. Government: 1) introduce better childcare 2) tax cuts for having more babies 3) return of family values fashionable again 4) Improve equality among citizens 2. Male: 1) Make male responsibility and fatherhood fashionable again 2) Legalise Polygamy 3)Bring back family values that worked for hundreds and thousands of years 3. Female: 1) Tone down feminist values, e.g. they cannot have everything 2) Bring back Motherhood and make it fashionable eg stay home mum is highly regarded. And many more. Don't talk about problems and more problems; talk about solutions for each individual society, which varies from culture to culture. There you are my proposal as an engineer who cares about solutions and not just talk and talk about problems.

Pay mothers... It's that similar forget about making it fashionable. Most educated women are not stupid. If you see men saying Bezos wife doesn't deserve half when he has cheated on her and initiated the divorce despite her taking the risk with him and having kids and supporting/working in his business then very few women will replicate. If you look at Elon Musk working his employees long hours and having them sleep in the office and then taking his child away from Grimes - many women see this cultural references and make choices to prevent worse cases scenarios. Its not feminist values you should critique its capitalist values i.e. valuing money and capital which provides power and choice.

I think we talk too much about women and their mate choices and don't talk about the fact that men started to resist the idea of marriage a long time ago...with good reasons. Reason that include women being automatically awarded full custody in many divorce cases, and men losing the house and having to pay monthly alimony and child support if the marriage ended in divorce. Too many men just didnt want to take the risk, especially the regular guy who can't just make all that lost income again. Most of the men I dated had their kids young, with someone else, and after that ended they had no intention of marrying again or having anymore children. Great guest and interview. I guess one thing that leaves me wondering is an eli5 example of how the population collapse looks beyond the math numbers not explained (.7 etc). The thing I wonder too, is that if ai replaces most work, which is what seems to be suggested if we're looking at ubi in 10 years which i doubt, then what's to say a much larger portion of humanity having less children in any way endangers humanity's existence? Seems like nature abhors a void, and it would auto correct naturally, as long as it's not some factor like pollution or something interfering to a large degree.

You fail to realize that it's not about the amount of people but the quality of life. When people neglect the biggest issues and focus on the smallest easy problems that are very quickly solveable, its clear that they are not thinking about the lives of these unborn people and the lives of the people that's already here.

These social programs in Norway sound to be surrounding having children, so how is it only the women who are benefiting from them? I think the men are equally benefiting from things like maternity leave and affordable daycare. Also, where are the statistics on guys actively looking for a serious relationship and children on these dating websites? In my experience it was few and far between that checked both these boxes. Are women really the problem? Could men's refusal to comit in favor of increasing the notches on their bedpost be a large contributer to this issue? 🤔 Its not hard to understand why women are not signing up to be single moms.

Maybe if women didn't shame men for not having enough notches on their bed posts as the first defence when they disagree with a man, then we can start talking about commitment.

I think you all should concentrate more on Ethnic Groups, possibly religious groups and ethnorelogious groups(e.g. Amish, Yazidis, etc.) and possibly subcultures(e.g. Goth, Punk, Emo, LGBTQIA because they are essentially emerging ethnic groups) and you will see its a lot more complicated. Essentially, heavily urbanized/modern areas would constitute their own massive ethnic group so while they might be on the "decline" other then it groups are doing fine

You guys are nuts! There are over 8 billion humans on Earth. People in developed countries are having lower fertility rates. But developing countries are still having so many children that we are still looking at a human population of 10 to 13 billion people by 2050. And, between our humongous population, shrinking agricultural fertility, rapidly declining and increasingly polluted fresh water supplies, paving over of farmland, etc., we are running out of food and water. Add to that, our eight billion people are using resources at rates that are not sustainable. The violence in countries like Syria and Haiti are caused by overpopulation. Man, you guys have to do some serious ignoring of facts to think that declining birth rates are anything but a good thing. Start worrying if the human population shrinks to fewer than a few hundred million.

The cultural ideology that promotes parenthood is called religion, lol. But one question that I have is whether modern economic realities are a moving target: for example, allegedly we need more people for jobs to pay into the system to support elders, but somehow, the labor market keeps getting squeezed by outsourcing, immigration, machines, and big tech. So, which is it? Because honestly, one interpretation is that we need more people for eventual wage sl*aves and cannon fodder.

Madds is devilishly smart but severely lacking in wisdom. The great religions figured these issues out a very long time ago. Paternal rights of kids to fathers by default. If men keep the money and keep the kids, the women will work things out instead of destroying families. We use the man's last name for a reason. Prodigy. When a man's wife would leave or die in the past, the man was challenged to find another woman to help raise the kids and run the house while he worked. If the kids were old enough, they would already know how to run the house. It's not pretty. But we must abide the truth of what works long term, not what sounds good. We need good men. Women, stop trying to be a man. We're not the same. More like opposites really. *Men sacrifice feelings for family. Women sacrifice family for feelings. We don't need arranged marriage. We need to get back to an 1800's family model. No welfare or enabling destruction of family legally. Welfare is theft and creates a system of dependency. If women don't get a man, they replace them with the gov. and steal rights from men, aka family stability. Women vote more than men and also vote for socialist policy. Especially if they're single. Maybe people should only get to vote if they're married? It used to be that you had to own land to vote. Get rid of the draft entirely. If the gov. wants war, it needs to be a gov. men will die to defend. We don't have that at all now. Otherwise, they can use their drones and advanced AI robots & missiles for national defense.
