A United Nations study has found Papua New Guinea could have a population of almost 17 million.
The new study suggests the island nation has underestimated its population by almost 8 million people.
The World Health Organization estimates there is only one doctor for every 10,000.
The news is expected to influence Australia's foreign aid program, which currently donates $600 million to its neighbour.

We should be sending them 600 million condoms rather than 600 million dollars.

Actually these days they’re more horrified by the idea of cannibalism than Australians or Americans. Missionaries did their job well. I lived there growing up and my mother has worked there as an anthropologist for 37 years on and off.

@dianneclark3442 Yeah, that's why pilots who bring supplies don't want to hang around too long... Yes they helped during WWII, but I wouldn't sleep well at night there.. let's just leave it at that, shall we...

@@Eliteplayer-mq3pm My, but where did you learn to use that language? From your mother working the streets? Read a lot of books and spoke to pilots who fly in PNG... Funny how they all say the same thing, which is "we don't hang around here too long"... Wash your mouth and learn to string a sentence without foul language...

@@mk1479 Papua New Guineans don't straight up eat people. Your pilots fly to the remote villages and come back saying they eat people. I've been there way too many times to know that it's a nice country full of nice people. Next time gather facts instead of listening to stories.

This is sad as it will intensify their problems if their population has grown so much. I have lived there and have great affection for the country.

Same here, saw some of the problems due to lack of an adequate medical system and it is hard to see people go through that.

What is the intension of such estimate when a proper census has not being conducted since 2020. Anyone can produce an estimate. The current estimates of its population between 9 and 10 million is based on reliable data from the 2000 and 2011 Censuses.

Not sure if that is an active cultural practice three days but yes they were, even the Australian aboriginals practiced funerary rituals that involve eating their dead relatives and warriors were known to eat some of the internal organs of those they killed, to "absorb their strength."
