The way the singer handles the word "summertime", the first word of the aria, tells you everything about how serious she is in committing to this music. This singer does it perfectly, just as written.
@travis07ful5 жыл бұрын
I like her better because she did a soft interpretation, sue doesnt want to "steal" the song like the others, she gave the heart that this song requires, however i dont know how this was written to be sing
@jr179045 жыл бұрын
I disagree. In the Feb 1 Matinee, Ms. Schultz ruined the aria totally. She used way too much vibrato, and was quite shrill on some of the high notes. Given that the performance began with Summertime, it set a bad tone for the rest of the show. Fortunately, Angel Blue sang the solo much better during her second act reprise of the number.
@JD-yu3dk5 жыл бұрын
Loved her singing. Preferred her tone in this song to Angel’s.
@soprano11763 жыл бұрын
Yes, I love how she is more of a spinto than a lyrico soprano.....Only concern for me is the lack of jaw control and causing her mouth to shake, and bit of a wobble at the end of her phrases. This means she needs more body and breath support less jaw.

I saw the NY Met's live simulcast of Porgy and Bess yesterday. I thought Golda Schultz was incredible and I loved everything about the production , singing, the set, the choreography. And then I scroll down here and read all these silly comments - she ruined it for you because she didn't hit the high notes? really? this woman is fantastic. Maybe the director gave her different directions, maybe she did her own intertrepation, but she was still fabulous.

George Gershwin was probably America's greatest composer of the 20th century. Virgil Thomson didn't like this opera and back in the day people actually listened to him as if he actually knew anything. He, himself, was a second rate composer and a bigot. This aria is so wonderful it has been recorded by almost every singer who ever lived. "Bess You Is My Woman Now" is one of the greatest operatic duets of all time. How important is this opera? Just let the music speak for itself. Check back with me in a hundred years.

That high B isn't in any written source, but Anne Brown (the original Bess) sang it when she did the version of "Summertime" that occurs here in Act I. But hey, at least we get that grace note on "fish are jumpin'," which is part of the new definitive performance edition. :-)
