Franny, I did the same top end job on my 1977 S model (with 100K miles) many years ago, and replaced all the original plastic and rubber tubes, lines, connectors, etc. I did that on the recommendation of a local Porsche repair shop owner. The reason was that he had experienced numerous times when the customer wanted a budget repair, the original older parts would eventually fail (within a year typically) once the engine was back in the car. Even if they look good, there is probably some long-term wear below the surface where you can't see it. It's a little more cost now but a savings later when you don't have to fix vacuum leaks or line breaks once the engine is back in. Do you remember the old TV commercial with the car repair guy saying, "you can pay me now, or pay me later."? lol Anyway, I would replace as many of the old original plastic/rubber parts as possible now. The project is looking good overall!

Ms. Franny, Hello - I have owned a 86 911 for about 33 years . I bought used with only 2000 miles and have done regular maintenace thru the years . I love your Budget Ebay series as you explain things so well and are showing fellow Porsche owners what happens with 35 plus year Porsches example rubber, plastic etc and how to go about doing such repairs and replacement . Keep up the GREAT work !! Thank you

Regarding the speed and reference sensors, there is a BMW version of those sensors that are WAY cheaper. Verify it on your own, but on my '87 the sensors are Porsche P/N 911 606 215 01. Even the BOSCH brand are $165 (Porsche brand are $323) apiece. The BMW version is P/N 12141708619M14 (on Pelican Parts) and the BOSCH brand are $84 apiece. So a 2 for 1.

I remember visiting a Porsche specialist who used to be in the Porsche racing team in Germany. He said it was a good idea to remove the heads every so often on the air cooled engines. Cannot rember why though. Whatever it was a case of a small fix now saves a huge fix later.

If you’re having them rebuilt I wouldn’t pressure wash them in your driveway. That gets imbedded in the concrete and doesn’t come out,plus how do your neighbors feel about the runoff? The rebuilders are prepared and equipped to clean the parts.

Can somebody tell me how does a transmission shop test a transmission that they rebuilt? Personally, I have never had any luck with rebuilt transmissions, they either don't shift right, or they leak. I always wind up going back to the shop multiple times and no matter what they do - they can't get it right. Very frustrating. Does the shop rebuild it and put it back in the car for testing? Or do they have a work bench to test it on? Hope your experience goes a lot better than mine.

Hi Franny Did you do a compression test before you took the engine out?
@HeidiandFranny5 жыл бұрын
Ahhh. Great question! I'm not a big fan of compression tests, but I do like leak-down tests and I plan to perform one before I start pulling things off. It is pretty cumbersome to get to the spark plugs with the engine in the car. Should be quite a bit easier with it out. I know it should be warm, but I'm really looking for big variations. Does this engine have the famous IMS bearing issue ??
@HeidiandFranny5 жыл бұрын
That issue started in the late 90s. The IMS Bearing issue happened on water cooled Porsches and not the air cooled with the exception of the Mezger engine in GT2 , GT3 and Turbos, which never had the bearing issue and was both water cooled and air cooled (It was air cooled when it won Le Mans in 1989). Since your going to have the heads off, I would definitely pull the barrels and pistons. Have them measured and if good, replace the rings, That would be a complete top end. I’d also replace any seals possible that don’t require splitting the case. Use the green Viton type. You might want to have the rockers re bushed and faced if your going to have the cams ground. Definitely have the cams profiled to be sure the lobes are still in spec. Pay attention to those vacuum lines going in and out of the oil tank. If they leak they will cause the engine to run rough. I would take all the fuel lines to they hydraulic hose shop and have new rubber crimped in. Might be some savings over buying new parts from Porsche. Good luck!
