The Porsche 996 is a beautiful car. How much bullshit I hear about headlights.
@leem12003 ай бұрын
Essentially a 996 has a few issues to watch out for like any other Porsche ! People need to stop giving these cars a hard time. Although I do think recently this is starting to change. I’ve had a 996 for the past 11 years and recently put it up for sale but then couldn’t let it go when I found a buyer! What a great car for the money. I still prefer the interior of the 996 to the nasty silver plastic trim of the 997. If you don’t have one, buy one quick before the prices go up as everyone else realises they are a great analogue car where you control it and not a computer !

I thought 997 but prefer elegance of 996. Odd since I liked the slippery look of standard 996. I like old school cars. 😂

Brilliant review ... I have an Oct 97 Manual Coupe 996 3.4 and i completely adore it ... massively understated and very very competent and engaging sports car. They are a complete steal, so buy one before the internet changes that.

Can I ask, are those the option 408 hollow spoke wheels, and what exactly have you done with your exhaust, it sounds pretty roar / aggressive on the throttle (in a very good way).
@shootingbrake3 ай бұрын
@@fairfaxa They are indeed the hollow spoke wheels. The exhaust is the following setup: Equal length manifolds X-pipe with 200cell cats Supercup backboxes It sounds fantastic from the outside. To be honest it's very quiet inside! The X-pipe and equal length manifolds create fantastic top-end performance which makes the car very exciting to drive.
@fairfaxa3 ай бұрын
Fantastic, I also have the hollow spokes and have just bought pilot sport 4S 265/35 and 225/40 rubber. I have cat delete and the fister mod… it’s ok, but not superb like yours. I will get onto the exhaust next. My car is silver / sunroof / TC delete / rear wiper delete / 6MT and was delivered with the 408 option code. Magnificent car it is, and was ex Sth Africa. It has 125,000klms and feels a week old! I have upgraded engine mounts to 993RS and have the GT3 shifter. Am considering the Ohlins R&T coilovers next.

Credit to you sir for putting great, accurate information together and making it a consumable length! My only question would be regarding the 2 year comment on suspension bushes - this would get VERY expensive! 🤣
@shootingbrake3 ай бұрын
It's worth noting this is for cars that are used regularly 'as intended', ie driven spiritedly down B-roads and covering more than 3-4k miles a year. Cars which see lighter usage will have suspension components last much longer.
@karloswright2003 ай бұрын
Pretty good but I would have to disagree that the suspension bushes are only good for two years Personal experience I would say double that on low mileage usage
@shootingbrake3 ай бұрын
Yes that is a totally fair point. The two year estimate would be based on one that does 5K+ miles a year and regularly driven enthusiastically on the road.

I had EXACTLY the same 996: 12/1997, black, spacegrey interior, Turbo-Wheels (got the hollow ones from 993). What a great car that was. I want one back again - also an early one. 👌

Very interesting - there are a few of us with this exact spec! I have a feeling that these cars were Porsche specified launch cars / dealer demo cars. There are a few cars dotted all over the world, all 97 build with this exact spec. I would love to know the full story.

Nice video and more accurate than most. Thanks you! And, yes, many of the issues are overstated. But bore score isn't rare on a .2 cars. Nobody knows exactly what the failure rate is, but single digit percentage point on the .2 3.6 engine is certainly a significant underestimate. Probably at least 30% have failed with scoring at this stage and quite possibly more. Loads of .2 3.6 cars out there with engine replacements under warranty or aftermarket attention to the bores at this point, be that a full Hartech style rebuild or a quick and 'dirty' fix with some steel liners to a couple of the bores. Seriously, loads of 3.6 M96 cars have had attention. Put simply, the 3.6 M96 is as prone to scoring as the M97 in the 997.1. The broader point is that the M96 is ultimately pretty fragile with a fair few catastrophic failure modes. Most aren't hugely common and the early 3.4 isn't too bad overall. But you'd hardly be hugely unlucky even with a 3.4 to have it let go on you. It's worth going in with eyes open, they carry a fair bit of risk. I've owned five M96 and M97 cars in total and done probably 200,000 miles in them in total. I had two total engine failures, one M96 and one M97. I would say that would be a pretty typical experience for anyone owning that many examples and doing that many miles. I know several people personally who have had both M96 and M97 failures. The anecdotal evidence is ultimately overwhelming. Great cars, and I'm not saying don't buy them. But the engines are a bit of a liability, there's no getting round that.
@shootingbrake3 ай бұрын
Thank you for your perspective - its interesting to hear another side to the story. The specialists I spoke to said they rarely saw bore-scored 996s of any iteration and mainly saw 997s, however short of doing a national survey its impossible to get a big enough data sample to paint a true picture! The key is to buy well and stay informed, and to build a relationship with a good local specialist.
@flat6croc3 ай бұрын
@@shootingbrake I think these days, the .2 cars are pretty lightly used (well, all 996s, they are quite old now and not many are daily drivers any more) so specialists won't be seeing too many .2 996 failures as a consequence of that. But the 3.6 M96 in the .2 is very much score prone like the 997.1 engines. There's really very little if any difference between an early M97 in a 997.1 and a 3.6 in the 996.2. The early 997.1 didn';t even have the final big IMS. Again, I'm not massively down on the 996.2, it's a great car and I think the performance uplift feels like more than 20hp versus the 3.4. I much prefer the 996.s 3.6 to drive over the 3.4. But the 3.6 does carry with it quite a bit more risk of serious engine problems, there's no avoiding that reality. Thanks again for the vid, good luck with the channel.

Great review! I recently sold my 03 996 Turbo and got into a 17 Maserati Granturismo Sport. The Mas is an astonishing car that's beautiful from every angle, sounds glorious and is a fantastically competent GT. But, I'm considering adding a 996.1 Carrera 2, as I love the simplicity of the design and the .1 headlights. If I do it, it'll be the mirror image of yours with the black on black. I look forward to the full review of your car and everything that you love about it.
