The 997.2 is a great, great version of the 911. I really enjoyed it when I had it. And it continues to look really good too. It performs very well. So I can understand why you like that one more.

Because it's more in our reach financially. Both cars are great I just cant see spending that kind of money on a car and not pay off my house . But I guess I am poor. I had a 996 I sold last year .my hope is to get a 08 tt.

Nice! I did the same thing! Sold my 997 manual C2S and bought a 991 C2S PDK. I was hesitant as I love manuals but I do many track days at Road America and the PDK shifts like a Formula 1 car! The 991 DOES NOT WEIGH MORE THAN A 997 BUT IT DOES HAVE MORE HP! The 991 feels more "planted" at 150 mph.

Thanks Joe for sharing, it's nice and inspiring to see how you seem to build up to enjoy and appreciate your cars - I was never a big fan of the outside look of the 964 to 997 generations, but the 991.1 in my eyes just looks fantastic, and every time I look at and listen to it, it's getting better. Your choice of color makes the GTS look stunning.

It's always like this, when 991 came out people were saying they prefer the 997, now that 992 came out, people are saying they prefer 991. It is really just an evolution, of course 992 is better than 991 and 991 is better than 997, and 997 is better than 996, the only time when previous model was better than the new model is 993, it's simply better than 996. I own 991.1 Turbo S and I will cry when the 992 Turbo S E-Hybrid with 680hp comes out later this year. But that's life. Porsche is business after all.

Have a 997 and I actually like the tail lights on the 997's more. I prefer orange rear turn signals as mandated in Europe. I like the longer/wider stance of the new car but wish the added length made the rear seat area roomier, they didn't. In the 997 Alcantara headliner is standard but now an option. Driven both(997 & 991 Carrers S) on track and live the old hydraulic steering although heard the 2016 is much better. Also 20 inch wheels are not necessarily better on a track, but they do look good. If I didn't have kids I'd buy a Cayman GT4 but I wouldn't give up the 997, it will always stay with me. Love the deviated stitching on your car and saw the 2016 cars which I may go for in PDK this time so wife can drive it too. Great videos and in no way putting down the 991 just sharing my thoughts. Thanks for spending the time to make the videos!

+arainla Thanks so much for your comments. The 997 generation is fantastic. As I said in the video, I loved mine. Now mine was a Carrera S so it is a bit unfair to compare it to a 991 GTS with torque vectoring, dynamic engine mounts, the engine power kit, etc. This equipment gives an advantage to the new car when I drive it and are expensive options on a Carrera S yet come standard on a GTS. But I loved my 997.2. It is an awesome machine to drive and live with day to day.

Clearly Porsche has upped the ante once again with the 991 and they are fantastic cars, but I can't help but like the styling of the 997 better. The extended wheelbase and the windshield pitch of the 991 makes it look less "911" to me...

A 911 isn't a 911 if it's larger than a civic. A 911 also isn't a 911 if it's handling is too good for a 911

In fairness it would be unlikely that an owner springing for a new 991....from a relatively new 997, would find the new car lacking in some way vs the older one. I haven't driven a 991 yet but have done a number of enthusiastic miles in 997's. The complaint I have heard from qualified 911 people is that the electric steering does not transmit the traditional 911 road feel like previous generations. For the record, I have an 85 and a 96 that continue to provide me with a ton of fun!
@Joe_Hutchinson
@Joe_Hutchinson 8 жыл бұрын
+Donna Moreau Very fair point. Why would I buy a new one if I didn't like it? The 997 version is an excellent car and if someone is in the market for a 911, you can find a great 997 for much less money than a new 991 and you will still have a great, fantastic drive. So that calls into question whether spending more on a new 991 vs a 997 is really worth it. For some, it isn't worth it. Part of the appeal of this new one for me is that it is a GTS with a little more horsepower and amenities that my 997 2S didn't have. And it will be the last of the naturally aspirated Carreras. News reports are hinting that the next GTS will be turbocharged like the rest of the Carrera line.

Test drove a GTS...but in the end, I chose the 997 turbo. The combination of the size, the speed, the 6-speed manual, ease of adding even more power just was hard to turn down. For the price, a 997 GT3 is also very capable. Very nice interior and color combination in your GTS.

I prefer the styling of the 997 and if you have one with a manual it'll fetch a premium as a classic in a few years. The 991 is obviously faster with a better interior but it has too many electronics (people don't like the electric steering especially).

@Joe_Hutchinson

+CommonSon it really is a tough call to make. I alluded to the dilemma in the video: You can save money by going with a well maintained 997.2 so is the 991 really worth it? I loved my 997.2S. Have you considered a 997.2GTS? That may be worth investigating. The 997.2 cars are really great cars, fast and fun and have already depreciated so you can save money. Having said all that, I love my 991.1 GTS. It is an improvement over the 997.2 in every way. It looks better (although that is subjective), interior is way better no doubt, it performs better. But it is an incremental improvement. Only you can decide if that is worth the extra cash. In the end, for me, I thought it was worth it.

I've daily driven a black 2006 911 Carrera 4S (997.1) for 3 years now. After the second year I bought a winter wheel/tire set and now it goes like a tank through the minimal snow I deal with in Kentucky. I bought it with 32k on the odo and I've put another 40k on it myself. These cars are meant to be driven. I've done 20+ track days with it and phenomenal. Drive it to the track, drive it to the max, drive it home. I love it. I once had my pads go down to metal on the last day, and drove home 240 miles only using the (screech) brakes about seven times. Got new rotors and good to go! Gave myself a Fabspeed Competition Air Intake for Christmas. It truly HOWLS at 5k and up, nice and quiet in town. I LOVE it! Otherwise, bone stock and the best car I've ever owned. I used to drive a used 1976 911S Targa, then a new1986 Mustang GT followed by a new 1993 Mazda RX-7 twin turbo (awesome car). In 30 years between 1976 and 2006 Porsche has come a long way, baby. I've thought about using another car through the week, but I can't stand the thought of depriving myself the experience. It's that good.

We had an e90 m3 for a while and really enjoyed it. But agree that it is a little heavy. But the 911 feels like it is in a different league. How do the brakes hold up with your m3 being supercharged? We found the M3 brakes like to get hot quickly and fade, and ours didn't have a supercharger.

+William Scott I drive the 911 in the winter yes, but not on a daily basis. The bulk of my daily commute to work is on a train in to Manhattan. I don't like leaving the car out on the train station lot every day and my house is only 5 minutes away from the station. So usually leave the 911 home. So I do drive it in the winter but mostly on the weekends or trips. I try to avoid snow and salt.

Hi Joe, Great information and video. I just ordered a 911 Targa GTS. March production date so I am days away from any final changes in the build. I have been going back and forth on the GTS interior package. I love the look of the carbon fibre and red contrast stitching but my dealer swayed me to the leather interior because of the Alcantara. They commented that it might not wear as well as the leather. How has the Alcantara held up in your car? Any issues with the Alcantara or GTS interior? Would you get the GTS package again? I noticed that your 991 doesn't have the two ugly federalized bumperettes on the rear bumper that your 997 had - why is that? Have the safety rules changed or did you delete them on the 991?
@Joe_Hutchinson
@Joe_Hutchinson 8 жыл бұрын
Hi there. The 991 was delivered without those bumperettes. No need to delete. Here is my guess not based on any reporting so this could be totally wrong: Porsche manufactured one bumper for all 997s that accommodated the wide European license plate. The Euro 997s don't have those bumperettes. But here in the US, the plate is not so wide. So Porsche just put those two bumperettes in to fill in the space. The 991 comes with a US specific rear bumper fascia, with a license plate opening sized for our plates. No bumperettes.

Great video, well done comparison between the newer and older generation 911's. One question though I don't think you really anwsered is whether you believe the price difference between the 997 and the 991 is worth it? Considering that you can get a nicely equipped 991 between $50-60k versus a new 997 for close to double that cost. I'm asking in terms of performance, styling and overall package. Thanks for videos again, very informative and helpful for someone starting their look to step up to the world of 911's!
@Joe_Hutchinson
@Joe_Hutchinson 8 жыл бұрын
+rccola454 Good point. I probably skirted that answer. Because it depends on your situation and desires. In my view, the 991.1 GTS is superior to my previous 997.2 2S in every way. Performance, technology, design. But my previous 997.2 2S is an awesome car and even as a 2009 model year car, it's superior to most brand new cars out today. And you can get a used 2009 911 for a fraction of the cost of a 2015 or 2016 911. If price point is important, than I recommend a 997.2. The 997.2 is close in performance and will make driving enthusiasts very, very happy. In the end, the 991.1 is a faster, better designed (interior especially) car so if max, up to date performance and refinement is the goal, then 991.1 all the way. Only you can make that personal decision.
@rccola454
@rccola454 8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Hutchinson thanks for the reply. I have always wanted a Porsche 911 and I'm in a position where I can enter into the market now. However it's tough for me to justify double the cost (even tougher to justify to the Wife!), especially since I live in Canada where it might be tough to drive this car 12 months, I can use the extra $50 on a great daily driver.

I'm a bit biased but here are reasons why 997 is better: - Hydraulic steering > electric steering - they basically switched to the latter to save money - All true sports cars should have a manual hand brake, electric brake is gay - Engine is louder. I can barely hear the engine in the new 991. - Feels more raw. The 991 is like a luxury car. - Interior is classic 911, very minimalistic. The 991 interior is basically from the Panarama which is a luxury sedan. - Tail lights look better but this is quite subjective. The 991 has recessed, Aston Martin-like tail lights which are pretty hideous to me. - Small and compact just what a 911 should be. If you park the 991 next to a Ferrari, they are pretty much the same size. It's just too big in my opinion. - Probably the biggest reason not to get a 991 now is that they will all be turbo-charged if they're not already. Goodbye to NA engine! Having said that, there are some things I do like about 991: - More aerodynamic profile. I never like how Porsche does not have a low profile like other super cars. It makes the car look more sexy. - Bigger wheels. I have to admit, 20 in wheels look so much better than 19 in. Newer cars will always have more hp and be faster so I don't think that is a plus imo, plus 385 hp is plenty fun and mine is manual since that is a must for me for any car if it has that option. In the end, 991 is not worth it for me.

No one can go wrong with a 997. They are fantastic. I prefer the 997.2 though. Having said that, I am glad I have the 991.1 with more power and it's the last of the NA engine Carreras. And I like the sleeker body and the more luxurious interior finishes. But the 997 is a great, great driver's car and will keep putting smiles on your face for years to come. I loved mine when I had it.

Got it. I got a puncture that created a very slow leak. So I was able to drive the car to my service guy at Porsche. So I was lucky. If I got a total flat out on the open road I would need to call Porsche 24 hour emergency service for a tow to service.

I have a 2009 997.2 and I love it. I like to drive a car near its limits and to do that in a turbo or a gts....you better be a damn good driver or you can end up in a grave. To me it’s about the 0-60....when am I ever doing 100 on public roads? Also...aesthetically, the 991 is too big....I feel Porsche is losing some of its heritage by trying to keep up with other car companies, as far as body/engine size go. Thank you for taking the time to make this vid and share your opinion. I subbed :)

Hey Joe, really enjoy your videos. How much difference did the Fabspeed intake make to the sound of the 997?
@Joe_Hutchinson
@Joe_Hutchinson 7 жыл бұрын
I bought the 997 certified pre-owned and the Fabspeed equipment was already installed. So I never heard the car without it. I loved the sound for the most part. It's an awesome system. If I were to install it now, I would get the switch that enables you to quiet it down if you want. So for long hours in the car, I would quiet it down sometimes. And then when I want a blast, flip the switch and enjoy the sound again! Fabspeed set up really does enhance the sound of the car.

Thanks for the reply! Was it just the Fabspeed intake or did it also have the Fabspeed exhaust too?
@Joe_Hutchinson
@Joe_Hutchinson 7 жыл бұрын
Both intake and exhaust. There was also a carbon fiber heat shield installed to help keep the air going in to the intake cool (obviously). I was happy with it. I just wish I had that quiet switch, which I believe Fabspeed provides now.

Hello joe, enjoyed ur videos but i have one question please. Im planing to buy the new 2016 911.2 turbo s with 580 hp. Now my question is does the turbo sounds louder than a carrera 4s,gts?
@VirusTornado
@VirusTornado 8 жыл бұрын
+leon STURM No. A Turbo 911 is always quieter than a Carrera S, 4S, GTS. Why? The turbos make the car quieter. However, even the 991.2 Carrera S and 4S now have new 3.0 turbo engines, so they're quieter than the 991.1 Carrera S and 4S models. Have you considered a GT3? Same price range, amazing sound. However, you WILL NOT regret buying a Turbo S, they're absolutely AMAZING. The performance is unbelievable, they're comfortable, they look so aggressive, and who in the world doesn't like 911 Turbos? Oh I forgot to mention, the 911 Turbo does have a "sport exhaust" option, but it's not as aggressive as the one in the 911 Carrera and Carrera S/4S because of the big turbos.

+leon STURM as +VirusTornado said, the turbos mute the sound of the exhaust. What makes the turbos spin is the exhaust gases so right there you have this device interrupting the flow of the exhaust and that makes it quieter. I agree that the Turbo S is an amazing car. It's the best of everything. Incredible speed and agility with the interior comforts of a grand tourer. You are going to love it. Personally, I am not sure I would add loud exhaust to a Turbo S. I think the pure speed of the thing is a rush! But that's just me.

@Joe_Hutchinson
@Joe_Hutchinson 8 жыл бұрын
+ERIC DAVIS I have not driven the GT3. In a way, I don't want to drive it because then I'll probably want to own it! ;) In actuality, I purposely chose the GTS because I wanted something less visceral, less hard core than the GT3. I am going to use the GTS for long trips with my wife and stuff like that in addition to my fun driving so having something so track focused as the GT3 didn't seem right for my use. Yet the GTS offers a bit more thrill than my previous 2S. I agree, with Porsche you can get a car tailored to your specific wants and desires!

I have done the exact same trade up. I just want to say one thing the 991 is more developed the 997.2 is a more engaging to drive and the interior while older style has less of a production feel to it. The increase in cost where I live was $ 60000 to trade up. The 991 is easier to drive fast but the 997 is fast enough to be considered irresponsible on public roads. If I had my money again I would rather have kept the 60K in my pocket if I'm honest. Maybe waited for the next incarnation after the 991.2.

Oh no! Sorry to hear about that. The 997.2 is a really good 911. I happen to be happy with my switch to the 991.1. I love the car. I went from a 997 2S to a 991 2GTS, manual to PDK, so a noticeable shift in car "personality" for me, if that makes any sense. So I am happy with the switch. Dreadzedan 997 in their extreme form aren't meant to look sexy they're meant to go fast around a track being that the 4.0 and Gt2RS are the most extreme 997. 991 do looks better but for the price and the 6spd availability the 997 is the best thing money can buy in the current diluted sports car arena.

I guess I am stating the obvious there. What I should have made clear was that for some people, the improvements may not be worth the premium price point for a new 991 car. @Joe_Hutchinson
@Joe_Hutchinson 8 жыл бұрын
+theSTEWiiiE First, make sure the engine is warmed up before flooring it (I realize that's obvious). The big thrust is high up in the revs. If you keep the revs up high, then yes, the car catapults you forward and is super quick. The GTS doesn't have the low down torque of a big V-8 so just kick down the gears or keep it Sports Plus and the car is quick. In Sports Plus, the PDK mapping will keep the engine revs in the peak power sweet spot.
@VirusTornado
@VirusTornado 8 жыл бұрын
+theSTEWiiiE The 991.1 has all its power in the high revs, if you floor it from 1500rpm in 2nd gear, you will feel the power coming once you go past 3-4000RPM! So that's just something to keep in mind. As Joe pointed out, Sports Plus is programmed to keep you very high in the rev range, so use it! Oh and it sounds insane at high revs!
