Ian, easily some of the best KZbin instructional videos available on the venue! Your directions are clear, precise and readily understandable. Even for someone like me who was born with 10 thumbs and half a cerebral cortex! Many thanks for helping our your fellow 914 enthusiasts as you do! Good on ya, mate!

Thank You...Because of your videos I was able to change my engine oil and gearbox oil this morning. It took me about an hour total for both jobs. Removing the passenger rear tire makes life much easier. I also adjusted my clutch cable while I was under there. I was able put the oil into the gearbox case without using a funnel, I used a jack stand to support and tilt the oil bottle to empty the bottle into the case.

One extra tip for the bolt tightening at 5:38. I have seen the threaded flange area on the end cover develop a crack if the special bolt is over tightened. Typically that crack runs from the threaded section down toward the opening for the speedo drive. So that is one area to be careful. Kudos for not going overboard on the oil recommendation. I also am a fan of quality "dino" oil that meets the correct spec. As you say, make sure it is GL5.

I'll definitely follow this video when I do this job on my car!! One thing for filling the car: Many Friendly Local Auto Parts Stores (FLAPS) sell pumps that thread onto the top of a gear oil bottle in place of the cap. The pump has a moderate-length hose on its outlet and a barbed piece on the other end. It stays put in the hole, and you can just use the pump to push the oil in. Not sure if this is better than using gravity, especially as you wind up laying under the car to work the pump, but it's another method.
@IanKarr3 жыл бұрын
Nice! Please add the name of the pump...

Ian, again another well produced and informative video, even for those of us who aren’t necessarily a “newbie” thanks for taking the time. I’ll be doing mine soon. It’s out of the car, so it’ll be a bit easier, and I agree about the fluids...old school works best n some applications for sure.

Currently suffering from a speedo drip, but I use a hall effect speedometer so I'm considering replacing the angle drive with a bolt.

Mr. Kerr, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your videos and found them to be most informative. You have been kind enough to answer some questions for me before and would like to trouble you with another one. I have a 1972 1.7 liter, bought it used a fe years back and need to change the tires. Do you have information related to the proper size tire I could purchase that would be as close to original as possible and suggested source(s)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kevin Taylor
@IanKarr2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin. Thanks for watching. Lots of guys (including me) run 195-65-15. You'll probably find the most selection at that size. Another popular size is 185-70-15. 165-80-15 look closest to OEM, but there are limited options. I generally buy from Tirerack.com. Hope this helps. Please subscribe if you haven't already. And consider joining patreon.com/iankarr. We have monthly zoom chats and lots of info is exchanged.

New 914 and going through some small probs. The angle-drive gear came detached from the bushing and bounced around on the road for a bit. Need to replace the angle-drive gear. The speedo cable got a little chewed up too so prob will need to replace that too. I'm getting the new bushing kit you're suggesting here (thx). And with the new angle-drive gear, I'm concerned I won't have that washer where it screws into the bushing. Do new angle-drive gears typically come with that (the one on AutoAtlanta)? Lastly, do you have a video for running a new speedo line? Thanks for videos!
@IanKarr Жыл бұрын
Prob best to order a spare washer just in case. Replacing the speedo cable is pretty straightforward. Just tie a string to the old one when you fish it through the firewall so you can tie it to the new one and guide it in. Good luck!

Hey Ian, I was just performing the exact speedometer replacement you showed in this video. When inserting the set screw, the hole was not perfectly aligned and caused the set screw to kick sideways and appears that I sheared the thread on the transmission mount. I’m terrified… what do I do now?
@IanKarr2 жыл бұрын
There's no terror in 914s! Okay, well maybe the oil strainer bolt. Without seeing the damage, I'd say first try to tap the thread at the same size. Maybe it just needs a little cleaning up. If that doesn't work, you should be able to use a time-sert to repair the hole. Good luck...let us know how it goes.
