I dont think much people know how to use the round gap tester. Dont use the the ascending ramp to gap, only to measure, to gap the plug use the hole in the tool that is what it is for.
@IanKarr2 күн бұрын
True. but the nature of that scale means at least some wedging is happening. I find the hole creates way too much torque and it's difficult to get things to open up by just a few thou.

If the bottom of the crankcase is tilted, there will be oil left on the low side. Can you use ramps? Yes, but probably about 25% of the oil will be left in there.

White Spirit / Mineral Spirit is a solvent and one of the things that chemically damages rubber so should never be used (unless you can immediately clean it off with something else, and it's not easy to clean off; and which in turn can be even more damaging to rubber); it will both expand rubber and leach polymers, from any rubber it comes in contact with.
@IanKarr25 күн бұрын
The quick exposure and immediate rinse I used shouldn’t have done any damage. If concerned, don’t do it. Or at least use a clean paper towel to wipe it down after. If the towel is clean white, highly doubtful any rubber has been compromised.

@IanKarrАй бұрын
Hey there. If your car is still stock, the fuel pump is on the engine side of the firewall on the lower right. Many people have moved the fuel pump to the front of the car. If this has been done, it could be accessible from the front trunk bulkhead, or it's behind the belly pan under the car. Hope this helps! Why are you looking to replace the pump?

Hi Ian, Great Playlist. I'm making notes! I'm in the market for a 914 (I wish, I wish...) I'm newer than a newbie. My dad was a mechanic and taught us kids to work on our cars. I hope I have the patience needed to take this on but my skills are limited. I'm not a welder, or painter, or mechanic by trade so this will all be new. I'm hoping to find one that drives and clean enough to get my wife to cruise with me! LOL.. On this episode you talked about the hell hole and the need to see the outside with the rocker covers off. If I ask an owner to do this how hard is it to get them off? Thanks for the videos!
@IanKarr2 ай бұрын
Hi, Workin. It depends. If the car is highly original (or faithfully cared for), the rocker covers may be held on by several rivets on top and a few screws below. Many cars have had the rockers off over their lifetime, in which case screws are often used in place of rivets. An unsophisticated owner may be grumbly about drilling the rivets and removing the panels. Knowledgeable owners know that removing the rocker covers is a part of any due diligence and will probably have pics of the longs behind the rockers already. IF you find an amazing car and the owner flatly won't allow the rockers to come off, and you feel like taking a gamble, poke the area around the right jack donut with a screwdriver or awl and see if the metal is solid. Ideally you'll do both before handing over money for a 914.

Beautiful car. Glad to see teeners getting quality attention. But, I wonder about putting the oil thermostat in front like that. Most engine cooling takes place on the engine itself, so what harm would there be in not having a thermostat at all? Maybe more importantly, until the engine is hot, the engine is having to pump thick oil 10 feet up to the front only to find a closed thermostat, then having to push that oil 10 feet to the back again. Porsche put the thermostat near the engine on 911 for a reason.

While you had the chance you should have moved the fuel pump to the front trunk or under the fuel tank or in the steering gear wheel / master cylinder well area underneath the body between the front wheels. As need to prevent future fuel vapor locking. Which my car did from the day it was new. 1973 2.0 I still have the car. Cost: $5050.
@IanKarr3 ай бұрын
Thanks, Perry. I moved the pump to the front on my bumblebee build, but left it in the original location on my green car. I've never experienced vapor lock, but that's maybe because the previous owner removed the bell from the heat exchanger valve and ducted it down.
