As a little boy, 7 or 8, I noticed all the movies, cartoons and kids shows, dubbed every fast car with the same note, and (sadly) no 'real' car ever sounded like that. It was the mid '80s before I discovered what that sound came from - it was the 917. I'm now 50. All my life, this is what a fast car SHOULD sound like.

Over 50 years now I've been a motor sport fan, and nothing sounds as good as that. Ok, a last generation V-10 Ferrari at 18,ooo rpm, those sounded pretty damn good too....

@@micahhicks88 up around 8300, but in a 24hr race they're going to want to preserve the engine, and the torque curve was optimal at 6400, so probably not much over that unless a Ferrari or a Lola was crawling up your tailpipe!

Just imagine, the later CanAm Porsche 917/30 could hit 200mph from standstill, in a little under 17sec, and top out at nearly 240mph. Depending on the circuit, the engine could be pushing out over 1400Hp.

Bar none, the Porsche flat 12 is the best sounding engine ever. There is another video with camera and mic inside the car and it sounds even better. Especially with all the whiring gears and fans, like a symphony.

Now that's what a RACE CAR SOUNDS LIKE! Nothing beats the 917, except the darn FIA! The 917 was too good too fast for it's own good! Ferdinand Piech designed a brilliant race car. My favorite of all time!
