Had one of these babies as my first car when I was seventeen, set me back $4500: Cheaper than a Corolla I was also considering. Such a great and practical car, I'll always have a soft spot for these beautiful little vehicles.

I have a 1980 924 turbo (931), and love it! I rescued it from an auto wreckers, and rebuilt it myself.

I picked up a 924s with an aftermarket turbo install for $600. Found out the problem was a bad ignition coil. It is tons of fun on the twisted back roads around where I live.

@FerrariCarr You must remember the car was NOT a bust. Porsche sold 120K of them from 1976 through '85, plus the 944 engined 924S (a lot for an independent like Porsche). Let's also not forget the 944 and 968 derivatives. The 924 saved Porsche in the late 1970s. The company was on the skids after the 914 closed shop, and Porsche had no "entry level Porsche". The 911 were expensive; the 928 outrageous for the era. The 924 brough people into the dealers and sold!

Joey is right, U.S. bumpers were not so good lookin' but I read how Euro dealers had folks asking if they could get American ones over there for the added safety. Think of the added savings of not having a bumper cover damaged so easily too with the U.S. one. I kinda like the 924 better than the 944. The lines were sleeker and it was a lighter car and proven faster due to that in the 924S form. Plus, I kinda feel sorry for it as so many hate it.

I love my 924s, decent gas mileage, great handling (konis), and the ability to carry 2 snowboards, 2 MTB's, or whatever in the hatch. Nothing else like it, next is a 944 turbo.

@FerrariCarr 1985 and up Porsche 924's have the 944 engine.
@tnmtemerity14 жыл бұрын
@jayrey5555420 The 944 is certainly better looking but, I do imagine labor rates are probably less frightful with the older 924 engine and handling should still be pretty amazing.
@FerrariCarr14 жыл бұрын
@xsalvioutlawx : Yeah, I forgot to mention that the book also said that as well. Or actually, they said "Porsche realized they didn't change the engine. When they finally outfitted the car with one of their own, it was too late; the car was a bust."

@FerrariCarr The Audi engine was quite a bit different than that of the Bus or AMC Gremlin. 924s had Bosch mechanical f.i. European 924s had 125 hp. US versions, initially, had 95 then 110 and were also heavier. That said, it performed better than any 356 or 912 or any class contemporary. (The 356 was originally all VW components, with the motor in the same place -- behind). It is a Porsche through and through. Handles better than a stock 911 of the era. You don't know your cars.

Times have changed people ! And now in june 2014 a pristine example of a 924S is $15,700. the people who insure collector cars like Hagerty knows their stuff. They are not in the business of losing money ! A Boxster S loses value faster than an 1987 924S in mint orig condition! Who is laughing now !

I don't know much about cars in terms of mechanics, but I read this book in Borders called "Crap Cars", and this car was listed at number 50, because at first it was a complete flop. It said that the 924 was originally supposed to be a Volkswagen model, but then Porsche ended up producing it.....without even taking out the VW bus engine that Volkswagen originally put in it.
