Loved the review! I would also pick the 924 - pop up headlights and that 70's feel makes it just so special and being so light, sort out the suspensions and push a few extra horses out of the engine for the ultimate cheap fun experience!

I have a 1977 early edition 2 Litre and a 1979 Turbo. Both are delightful and well balanced cars to drive. The Porsche snobs do look down their at them if I happen to be in proximity in traffic, a classic event or even at a club event. Yet I get more attention and genuine interest from the public at large, which is both gratifying and amusing. Both cars were dilapidated and neglected when I bought them, both are now fully restored, reliable and I regularly receive offers far exceeding their insured value. I'll not be parting with either nor will I be parting with my 2.7 Cayman, which I think is a future classic. It too was scruffy when purchased and is now my daily driver. In regards to the 924- any vintage- just look at how many restoration vids there are on this platform and the renewed respect and enthusiasm for the model and suddenly Porsche affordability kicks badge snobbery up the Ruckseite!

I had a 1987 944 base in beautiful condition and really enjoyed it, but I wanted to keep the miles down (86k when bought, 91k when sold), so I sold it to make room for a 2005 Boxster S. The 944 was built MUCH more solidly and was MUCH tighter than the Boxster, but it couldn't hold a candle to the Boxster S's usability, power, and handling. My Boxster is also Speed Yellow. Too flashy for me, but everyone else seems to love it. Thank you for your video and comparison.

Great to see a balanced review of the 924S. A couple of things; the 924 also saved Porsche in the 70s and the standard 924S had 150BHP, while the 924S LeMans edition had 160BHP. Some shameless free advertising - appearing on my channel soon will emerge a video of me and my 924S going around Castle Combe. To anyone considering buying one, do it now before they become too expensive, they've been affordable for far too long - say 25 years. If it's the car you've always promised yourself, buy one! As for the Boxter - I'd also have one if I could as I'm a Porsche fan, but I've only driven a 2.7 auto - which wasn't very impressive. It was a trade in and the original owner got £6k for the whole car, he even supplied the matching hardtop he paid... £6k for, when it was just an option, ouch!

2:23 - It's front engined. 2:59 - Suspension/Chassis based on 70's engineering. Koni adjustable stuff and a suspension guru can dial in a more modern feel. Get Michelin Pilot Sport 2 and a Quaife ATB. Personally I'd ditch the engine and fit in a Golf R TFSi engine in....

The bad name the Boxster gained was largely due to Jeremy Clarkson who nicknamed it the Poor Man's Porsche. What these models have in common is that they are entry-level models and therefore many are skeptical. They do not offer the required status, but they were and are excellent sports cars for the money. I had a 924 in the 80's for four years and it was a wonderfully nice car. I used the car mostly for long trips on the continent and on country roads in southern France, for example, it is excellent. You always feel that the car is alive and offers enthusiastic driving, but at the same time it offers enough comfort that long stages on the motorways can be done without getting tired. The original VW 924 engine was nice in the 80's, but today I would probably prefer the larger engine from Porsche in the 924S or 944.
@paulgudedeberitz23356 жыл бұрын
Both are very practical and have ample luggage space. The Boxster is more of a sports car while the 924 is a GT. I have a 924 Turbo, and am very pleased with that car. The Boxster 986 is a much more modern car, and the handling is more like a late 911 (991.2) but the gearing is a bit low so highway cruising is not as comfortable.

I'm now choosing between my two childhood favorites. An original 986 Boxster like this one or a 996 Carrera. I don't know what to pick since owning either of the two has its own pros. I love the Boxster because of its design and its convertible top while the 996 Carrera has a body that stays true to the original 911. The other good thing about the 911 is its privelege but the Boxster is more of an everyday car for me. I need help on deciding for one hahahahaha.

The 924 is 150pounds away from being as precise as the boxster, you just need to replace the now tired bushings with polyurethane ones and the front springs with 280lbs ones and you're set for a perfect car, cool, precise handling, great driver's car all around. I also like the boxster but the body flex is a set off for me as well as the cheap looking interior of the whole 996 series to be honest.

The seats of the 924s probably have risers, just remove them for a better seating position. The instruments are from VDO as with other car manufacturers, but unique to the Porsche 924, 944 type 1 series. The shape of the glasses in the instrument cluster are specially designed to prevent sun glaring. You will not find this in an VW golf, Audi or other Porsche. I really like the 80s look of the dash vs the 90s look of the later models. The 2.0 is a non-interference engine vs the 924s/944 2.5 interference engine so lesser chance of total engine faillure when loosing your timingbelt. The 924s 2.5 has the full alu "Porsche" engine whereas the 924 2.0 has an alu head combined with an iron block. The base 2.0 engine is continued in the turbo, gt, gts and gtp versions, but modified for more horsepower. Ignore the van-engine crap remarks coming from others. The transaxle concept is a good one. Embrace the fact that the transaxle Porsches have a front-end water cooled engine with the gearbox in the back. Just drive above 4000 rpm and you will love it.

Interesting review not least because I ran a 924s for about 6 years and have since been tempted to buy a boxster on several occasions. In current terms the 924s is just too slow and rather thirsty for the performance delivered. I found the handling a little odd if you try to get the back end out, not that it was easy to do. Perhaps it's an age thing but I compare any potential "sports car" purchase against -say - a 200hp remapped 320 (or 330d) E46 BMW coupe and few cut it. Have you tried the post-2003 Mk3 MR2, as you seem prepared to drive unfashionable cars (as am I) ?

First of all comparing a vintage car with the 986 is stupid. The absolute fact is that the 924S is a more reliable car all around, period! Better built, no bs technology that is expensive to replace like tbe stupid locking system, window regulators, coolant leaks, ims, rms seal, etc etc etc. It was just a crammed built car to make Porsche money and prevent them again from going bankrupt. The 924S values are high and holding their value while the boxster keeps depreciating and if you buy cheap you have thousands in repairs to get it in the better condition. Access to the engine is bs. The MK2 MR2 was a better design with better engine access and air cooling. When tbe boxster works yes more power, handles better but by far I'd go with the 924S

At 4m 30s he states that a 924 is a cool car and insinuates that it's possibly more desirable than a 944! I'm spluttering in my Earl Grey here! Pah! 😁

I think all these retro tests are variable...I mean some cars will be more sorted than others. And if the tester did not own one when they were new...hmm....he will not know how it should be! so best to seek out original old road tests...watch those first..then watch tests like this to get an idea of how they are now they are OLD cars!

LS swap in the boxster and you'd have a monster! the newer boxsters esp the spyder are one of the best looking cars on the market, better than 911s. i had a 924 back in the day. PAIN. lesson learned.

924S - a lot to be said for it, yep. But you didn't really say how pretty it is. Did you?

Catching up on your videos and really liked this comparison. I’ve been looking to get a cheapish rwd car to sling around the backroads in France. Thought of 924 (cause I’d like a front engined car but not heavy) but it is getting more expensive and I wouldn’t want to push it very hard. The Boxster is now affordable and would be excellent for carving up the road, but not something I’d stand on its nose and fling around. So... a Mazda MX5? The Boxster is sweet though. Thanks!
@Number275 жыл бұрын
A boxter will be more rewarding than an mx5 as sharper but an MX5 will allow you to slide around much easier!! And also be way cheaper to run!

Number27 Thanks. Never been a big fan of the MX5 but it is a great package for the money. I enjoy your channel because you talk about how the car feels. There is a real connection with the cars. I’ll have to binge watch :-)

In the late 70s and through the 80s the 924 and 944 saved Porsche. The 944 alone sold 163,000 units!

Not really a good comparison, 4 banger (detuned no less) vs 6 banger 40 year old interior vs 20 year old interior. Coupe vs Cab.. Also, the 924S is a rather odd compromise where Porsche detuned it to have a base model.. instead of just updating the actual 2.0 base model with EFI and a new Type 2 interior which really would have sold. For any sensible comparison, compare the 2.0 924 to something in the same price range , today. a Golf Mk1 GTI the Golf mk1 gets silly prizes for a FWD small hatch.. when the 924 is very underrated and so much more fun to drive

The 924S actually has a Porsche engine (from the 944).

Did you own a 924s or 944 when they were NEW in the 80s??
@gsthree95345 жыл бұрын
"Loose limbed". Great descriptor. Its always great fun to drive someone else's old Porsche. I've owned old Porsche's and they leak and brake and require a lot of expensive maintenance. Yes they were well engineered and drive great, but they spend a lot of time out of service and always have a long fix it list.

I’m not sure this is the most knowledgable review. Of course the ‘equivalent’ Cayman is a lot more expensive. There isn’t one. The Cayman was released about 6 years after the 2.5 Boxster was discontinued. And no mention that the 2.5 in the 924 is the same but detuned engine that came out in the 944 i.e. nothing to do with the derogatory comments about van engines.

I enjoy watching reviews like this but hate it when the people doing the reviews don’t do their research prior to driving a car. Nothing worse than watching a review when they don’t know anything about the car they’re driving. This guy has no clue what he’s driving when driving the 924. Has no knowledge about the engine which is taken directly from the 944 or any other information about the car. Annoying.

I enjoy constructive and accurate criticism of my videos but nothing worse than when the guy writing the feedback has no idea or has not listened properly to the video before writing his comments. I mention clearly at the beginning that the original non S 924 did not have a Porsche engine but that the S model as tested here does. Annoying.

A poorly informed (unknowledgeable) reviewer. Just as the 944 was an evolution up from the 924 Carrera with 928 flavor added, the 924 S was an evolution down (more affordable) from the 944. The engine block in the 944 and the 924S was one bank of the 928 V8. Mechanically, the 924S was identical to the 944 base model with narrower tires and a 924 skin except for 944 highlights (bumpers). The 924S was created for one reason: make a more affordable 944. The original 924 (1970s era) was powered by an Audi 4 cylinder engine and ran rough from the factory. The half 928 block introduced as the 944 engine ran more smoothly due to internal balance shafts (technology Porsche licensed from a Japanese manufacturer. Both the initial Base 944 and the 924S were accurately advertised as having 130 mph top speed. The peak torque curve was fairly flat from around 2500 rpm to around 6000. Getting from 110 mph to 130 mph was a very long drive though. Both enjoyed a front mounted water-cooled engine mated to a rear-mounted transaxle making weight distribution close to 50/50. Motor mounts were somewhat fragile though.
