So people are saying Finn from man in a garage did it wrong. Well he followed videos that I sent him and having built over 2000 of these engines with out any timing issues I’d say he was not far wrong at all. Obviously a couple of different ways and neither are wrong

I've watched this twice and I'm now confused than when I started. I feel like this would have been the perfect opportunity to record the whole procedure and show exactly what you did, as the voice over doesn't really give enough detail on the exact steps. It seems to gloss over some critical bits.

Where did you get the tool to hold the end of the camshafts from?

Thanks! Seems like the Bentley manual totally breezes over this detail. So if I were timing bank 1 first, and left bank 4 fully assembled - then while at TDC I would want to make sure through the green cap that bank 4's timing mark is facing the cam cover? That way when I put the camshaft back in bank 1, it will also face its own cam cover?

Hey if I’m just going to replace the lower left timing chain tensioner is locking it off at top dead centre good enough or do I have to buy one off those cam lock tools

🙏🏻 thanks, please share some experience and thoughts on the oil in the water issue. Happy holidays 🎅🏻🎄

In my case it was not the engine, it was either oil cooler or air oil separator , you will never find out for sure so just replace both , you would have to manufacture a whole jig to test the oil cooler on this car , a new one is only $100 so just replace it

Nathan, It is not correct when you say this M96 engine can’t be timed in situ, it can I did it ( with great amount of patience needed ) while changing the cam chains and guides, it certainly ain’t easy but like me I didn’t have the lifting equipment to do that, so if you are a diy mechanic just set aside quite a few days to strip down and refit. I saw it on another KZbin video at the time but couldn’t relocate that video. One of the most difficult parts to do was actually see the slot on the end of the cam so I used my thin iPhone as a camera, parallax viewing was particularly awkward but also used my kids Playdoh (Plastacine US?) to take an impression, was well worth the effort. Trust this helps you guys out there.

Can you link to the video you say is wrong? Was it "man in a garage"?

Yes

If ‘Man in a Garage’ was wrong, then why did his marks all line up after he was done? His engine also ran quite well once he fixed the vacuum leak.

no point in explaining on what it looks like with no covers on with respect to cams . should have showed timing with covers on.. and explained it with the way the slot the intake cam faces. Good video though and there are always things to learn. BTW engine can be timed in the car no problem. you just use visual for exhaust cam alignment.

Ehm.. the cam lobes on the cylinder should either both have been totally closed... Or either almost both about to open... Something seems of 🤔
