Red Stapler perfectly agreed!

Red Stapler Why restrict it to the 996.1? There are advantages in terms of analogue control (throttle cable) but that barely detracts. The 3.4L revs out more freely, but has inferior power and torque and torque band width. Again, these differences have very little effect on the quality of the driving experience. The essential components that make the 996 possibly best of the last of the lightweight analogue 911 driving experiences (especially in 2WD manual form) are present in the 996.2 in pretty much equal measure. The 996 also handles better and performs better than any of the equivalent air-cooled models. It makes me laugh when people who have heard the 996 is hated but have little knowledge about the car otherwise, love parroting it to anyone within earshot, in the hope they will be seen as knowledgeable . As for the silly nonsense about the headlights - far more character than in those than the formulaic roundys :). I'm not criticising the more modern heavier refined, heavily styled offerings - those being more GT than Sportscar, but making a case for wider acceptance of the true 911 qualities inherent in that game changing model, the 996. The model that along with the Boxster, saved Porsche from economic extinction.

Right on dude. I'm also open to the idea of a '99 model when at first I snubbed my nose at the 996.1 entirely. I'm learning they had less IMS failures, and the 3.4 L and 3.6 L motors are basically the same. At the end of the day 300hp is enough for me on the street in a relatively comfortable and classy car. My dad has a newer Audi S3 that is 300hp that is crazy fast on the road and yet not even as fast as these old Porsche's. There will always be someone else with a faster car anyway, but not a more "fun" car if you know what I am saying. Otherwise we'd all be driving Corvettes, and I do love those, too. But you get the feeling the only fun of driving that car is the acceleration... the rest seems kind of dull.
@WheelNuts
@WheelNuts 5 жыл бұрын
100% agreed. The thing that counts for me is how much you get involved while putting down these 300 or whatever horses to the road and how much fun you get doing it. 98, 99 models have double row ims bearings, less failure rates and personally I like the looks more than the facelifted ones. Good luck with your search and let me know if I can help. Cheers!

Actually 1% failure rate on IMS on 1998 and some 1999 cars with the Dual Row IMS. Proven by class action in US. Great video mate.

The 996 is 02 320bhp 3.6 C4S which is the wide body model with turbo chassis and breaks which has great handling but at times on bad roads a bit harsh, but is stunning looking. The 997 is an 05S 3.8 and with the PASM you can control the suspension better and is more refined car but they are both unique and a pleasure to drive.

I've been seriously looking at getting a 2004 targa and didn't know that the IMS replacement part would only be a 40k + - mile part. Had understood that IMS was only like a 4-5% fail rate.

JR Harlow 40k miles are still a long distance though, especially if it would be a weekend car.
@Minoltalphafan

Just replace the IMS with the factory update part everytime you do the clutch (the bearing is like $150), assuming it's a manual and stick to the 5k or once a year oil change recommendation.
@sumporfuk
@sumporfuk 6 жыл бұрын
I beg to differ on the yearly oil change sequence if the car is not driven. 6 month oil changes are much better because the oil breaks down faster than you think and the acids in the oil eat away at the internals.
@WheelNuts
@WheelNuts 6 жыл бұрын
sumporfuk thank you, that is a very good point indeed. If the car is not driven frequently or driven regularly at short distances without reaching to operating temps, the changes should be more often.

Great video! Thank you. Your car does not sound stock. I have had 3 996’s and have little desire for other 911’s, although I do like the 997 GTS, but they are twice the money of my 40th AE and in my eyes, not worth it.
@WheelNuts
@WheelNuts 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, glad that you like it. :) Everyone in the know says the same and I also thought that there was some aftermarket kit but it is bone stock with worn out cats, I think that makes it louder. 997 is my favourite gen in terms of exterior looks (I dare say that the simple 996 interior is better :) ) and the GTS is the sweet spot but it is not worth that kind of money compared to 996 as you say. There is also a 997 comparison and an IMS video that you might like as well. Thanks again for watching. Happy New Year!

Agreed, because of the essentials like air cooled engine, floor hinged pedals etc. But I dare say a 996 is a better sports car experience, less Porsche admittedly but at a sweet spot before the invasion of electronic nannies.
