The car had 151k miles and I got it ALL-IN for $20,000 including shipping across the country and tax-title-registration. It is without question the BEST car I've ever driven in my life!!! I have the original window sticker and it was a $98,000 car when new. I've owned 8 other Porsches since 1982. There is one problem with that: roughly 10 times more 996s were sold, when compared to the 993 sales numbers (not quite, but for illustrating it is ok to round up). Add that and that the 993 is the last air-cooled 911 and that it's been going up in value for 15-20 years now (basically since the launch of the 996). My agency works for Porsche and I worked on the 996 launch, I remember all the purists crying and bitching like it was yesterday, especially about the headlights (honestly, who cares?). We had a 996 targa at the agency for some time and I loved that car to pieces, would purchase one today if I was in the market for a combustion engine.

Something I read in an article online said the IMS issue usually affects the cars that people baby vs the ones driven hard at least occasionally. Thanks for an honest and mostly accurate review of the 996 model. As a former owner of a 2004 911 Cabriolet with the 3.6 motor with only 8,600, I can truly attest to the driving performance of the car. While I was NOT in love with the sound of the engine unless under full throttle, it had plenty of punch and the car's handling was excellent. I personally liked the interior very much and never thought of it as cheap or outdated in any way. The 3.6 motor was a nice upgrade over the earlier 3.4 and had a good powerband. No one seems to truly understand the history on the headlights and perhaps you should have spent some time on that. Most people think they were a cheap transplant form the Boxster to save money but that is 100% wrong. The lights were designed from day one with the 911 Turbo model in mind and were actually considered quite the upgrade over the traditional oval light. They were showcased early on in the base 996 model and later presented in the Turbo but never caught on with true Porsche enthusiasts. Unfortunately, I must agree with most other Porsche lovers, I had NO love for mine and while they worked quite well, they killed the clean lines of the front end and made it look dated, something Porsche quickly realized and changed with the introduction of the 997. Next, while it looked pretty overall, the car had very feminine, NOT manly lines which is the main reason the 997 was changed to reflect arches and bulges more in line with traditional Porsche heritage. Lastly, the IMS was a killer for me and the main reason I dumped the car. After hundreds of complaints and being threatened with a class action lawsuit, Porsche agreed to pay a large percentage of the repair bill on most damaged cars, especially the lower mileage ones. Porsche should never have allowed this to happen in the first place. Fortunately for owners of both the Turbo and GT3 models the IMS is NOT an issue. As for the ultimate collectible, I would have to say hands down it would be the last few years of the 997 model. Why? Because the 997 embodies all the traditional Heritage that Porsche lover’s desire with the refinement of a water cooled engine and almost all of the bugs worked out. The 997 was the 996 taken to finishing school, a better car than any previous generation (air cooled or not) but did not become the oversized cruiser that exists in the 991 series car. Late 997 models with low mileage will hold / increase in value over the years and I believe remains the true embodiment of what the 911 was, is, and forever shall be.

After watching this video, I decided to purchase a 996. I got a 2001 Carrera 4 in Biarritz White with the natural grey leather interior with the full leather package. I love this car. I like the narrow body model because it reminds me of the slimmer body of the earlier models. Though it has PSM, it still feels, largely analog. It handles wonderfully and I like the sound of the exhaust on the car because I can keep a conversation going on the interior, but when I push it, it growls and spits like a Porsche should. The seats are marvelously comfortable. Even the outdated navigation system works perfectly and the Nokia digital amp stereo system sounds great. I also like that I can reach most of the engine through the boot lid. Unlike the newest 911's which are about accessible as the mid engined models, I can still actually work on it, keep the engine clean and show it off if necessary. Also, the headlights. When you look at them over a long period of time, they grow on you, the plastic has all these translucent lines that catch the light and on the inside is this beautifully angled foil. The new lights are neither here nor there. Good call, Doug!

On target! Always regretted selling my '85 911 for some still unfathomable reason because I felt I needed something to carry "stuff"...a new Ford Explorer in 1991, a really dumb move. Occasionally grieved over that sale for years. Then by age 70 I knew salvation was needed, ran into a low mileage, good deal '02 911 Cab and concluded it was now or never, while I could still climb in and out of a 911. Six years and happiness still prevails. Don't be afflicted with "woulda, coulda, shoulda"....anyone with the itch should scratch it NOW.

The 996 is a pretty good car for it’s era. Thanks for showcasing it Doug. I own a 991.1 GT3 and I admit that today’s 911’s are pretty sophisticated compared to this model. But for that price range for the 996. I definitely would buy one if I have the extra $. It might not be “the” best looking 911, but I don’t see anything bad about it. It’s still a good car.

About 5 years ago, I bought a '99 996 and I just love it. Steering and shifting in the 6 speed are so responsive and precise, it's just huge fun to drive. 60 in 5 flat is fast enough for my taste, and the car is so maneuverable, I love the new counter measure it gives me in dealing with tailgaters. If we come into some curvy roads, I just leave the cruise engaged and steer, watching the knucklehead slowing down because he cannot take the turns at speed. I had the great pleasure of hearing Peter Shutz talk about his first week after being hired as their president. Morale was down, and he asked about their racing team. They were due for the next race in 90 days, but nobody expected to win. He said "As long as I'm president, we will try our best to win every race we go to." This change in course helped energize the entire company and led to design changes trickling down from the racing team into production. He decided to cut the prices on all the unsold cars in their back lot, which hadn't been good for morale (seeing all those unsold cars when you come to work). This car is so well built that 115 mph feels the same as 55. My car had been leased by an orthodontist for her first owner, who told his friend, a software exec when he was ending his lease, who bought her then. She was garage kept and in great shape, with 52,500 miles and I spent $22,000. I couldn't care less about the headlight shape.

Drove a 997 for 3 years here in Germany. Don't think I turned a single head - except for the children. That can be a positive or negative, depending on what you're after. 911s just fly under the radar. Now, my new F-Type R? Not so much...Again, a positive AND a negative.
@freeman23447 жыл бұрын
Well, some people like their cars to attract attention, they get them to stand out from the masses etc., so a car that flies under the radar is a negative for them. It's a positive for someone who's not as much of a "showoff". I'm a pretty reserved guy and the F-Type gets more attention than I would like sometimes, but it's been "mostly positive" remarks thus far, so not too bad. Still, can get a bit tiring if you're having a bad day and some random person starts chatting you up at the gas station. Never happens with a 911, for better or worse.
@lukereardon1821 Жыл бұрын
I always liked the way the turbo looked in red and this car with those wheels and those rear fenders does look really nice. As for the headlights, they look like they have tear ducts and that’s okay. But the 993 dashboard is much nicer than this cars. The way they upgraded it from the previous cars dash was brilliant IMO. The SC steering wheel is the nicest of the three. 😊

I purchased a 996 turbo for 22k with 130k. With the transmission mount replaced, solved vibration in transmission, with the fuel pump replaced car stopped hesitation during hard cornering, With the new tires car sticks even more to the pavement during acceleration during mid corner. I have now owned this car almost 10 years with the only service to a wheel bearing that went out during a trip. Super cheap and with no other issues. Its more raw than the 997 so its more fun and feed back is better to the driver. it will do triple digits all day without breaking a sweat. When I first got the car the passenger front intercooler sometimes had a drip but now seems to of sealed itself. Working on one is a breeze. I would however like to paint the car, the last person to paint the car was not particularly skilled. It could be a 8-10 point car with a repaint. It does not leak anywhere. I drive it hard and put it away and have had no issues. These are the unspoken porsche due to the IMS and eggy headlights. I like the headlights, more modern, and its very quick for the year. I also have a 944 turbo that I purchased, light and fun to drive as well. Oh and watercooled, well can you say 250k miles or better?

996 is hated because of the transition from Air Cooled to water (or other way around, I get them mixed up). Same way 991.2 are hated because 3L turbo engine. 996's are superb, great value for money right now, appreciating and pretty rare :)
@kenshirk69937 жыл бұрын
they sold 175.000 of them.
@mikec10967 жыл бұрын
ironically , the fact that so many more 996 (175,000) were produced than 993 (68,000 from the online search I did) makes the supply soo much bigger for the 996 and hence the demand lower. Take the diamond industry for example, if there were a lot more diamonds available do you think they would command that high of a price? This is basic supply and demand. dirt is soo cheap b/c it's readily availble, unlike gold. BTW they are not making any more 996 or 993 for that matter, and every year there are fewer of the initial produced cars available due to crashes etc. I have looked the prices for 996 c4s in Germany and other european countries and they do seem to be a heck of a lot more expensive to buy same spec car there. It also seems that Europe in general does not care about the IMS.
@auturgicflosculator21837 жыл бұрын
Diamonds aren't in the least bit rare. De Beers artificially inflated diamond prices starting in the 1940s, and it's become such a strong tradition that they be a precious status symbol, that those prices probably won't fluctuate much...De Beers just pays out hundreds of millions in settlements, and keeps on raking in billions~
@hakeemsd70m7 жыл бұрын
Mike C Diamonds are some of the most plentiful jewels around, they literally use diamonds in everything from construction equipment to overpriced rings. Try Tanzanite or Russian Chrome Diopside for rarity.
@mikec10967 жыл бұрын
John Wick, Hakeem Mulholland, Guys I'm talking cars not jewels. I know about the De Beers family and I agree with what you said. I could have picked a better more relatively rare product for comparison. The thing about the De Beers monopoly is that b/c they control most of the supply they are artificially more rare. It's not like I can go into my back yard and pull a diamond from my rear. I think you get my point and it would have worked better if I were to have used Hakeem's examples instead. Thanks

The 996 is by far the best one if you want to make a shit ton of power and go fast. By far the strongest engine out of them all. The performance aftermarket for them is huge now, and they can be picked up for fairly cheap. This is the top for anyone who comes from Vw's. It usually goes VW, Audi, Porsche. And if you follow that trend. This is the one you get.

Just acquired a 2003 996 C4S with 6 speed manual and this video helped in that decision. I love this 911 and I previously owned a 991.1 C4S with PDK. The 996 is way more fun, sporty, light, nimble and most importantly - engaging as 911’s should be. And after all these years it turned out to be a looker. People notice this beaut commuting in and around the office.

You didn't press the spoiler button (by your left foot)! Pop up spoilers are almost as cool as pop up headlights. That is just about my favourite part about this car.

Take out the ash tray, CD holder and move the climate control module to the bottom. That opens up a big spot that will fit a new double-DIN android stereo very well. It's awesome because you can load Torque on the stereo then access the ECU in real time on a big screen built into your dash. It's like a budget Tesla.

Plugging his best mates car... Lol. Seriously though, still an awesome car. Why they changed the lights on the 996 I'll never know. If not, the snobs would love it too.

I just picked up a 996 with 135K miles on it, and all I can say is what a BARGAIN these cars are! This car grows on you with every drive - the performance is incredible. Constantly have to check the speedo because you aren't aware just how fast you are going - handling is outstanding. I cannot believe the drive, performance, and the looks of this car. By far one of THE best values out there in the sports car market, and it has far exceeded my expectations.

@Anon Doe Previous owner installed new clutch and IMS bearing, belts, but nothing else major has been done. I have some small issues I need to address during vacation time, but they are common according to the forums (aftermarket radio is causing the alarm to trip at times, check engine code for a secondary valve - apparently $70 part), but nothing else. I've driven the car 1500 hard miles and just love it. Do wish I purchased one with lower miles (although lower miles doesn't necessarily mean better shape), only because I plan to drive this one quite a bit and will be racking the miles. Still, I'm very happy with the purchase and plan on taking this to 200K miles - would buy another in a heartbeat. These cars are very solid and well built.

@2kostasd 1500 miles? Damn thats nothing. Well fingers crossed you get 20k no issues haha. Please update me if you can remember!!

@Anon Doe It's one of 5 cars in rotation, and been busy with work, so not much time for leisure drives. I honestly don't foresee anything major to do on the car in terms of repairs, but will update if anything happens.

I owned an 85 911 and 01 996. I loved my 996. My favorite thing was the interior, it was sporty and simple. I was looking at a 997, but the interiors have become too plush. I was always a little worried about the IMS, until I had a rear main seal replaced and found out the IMS update was done. To this day I'm not sure why I got rid of it. One of my bone-head mistakes. BTW. the turbos and maybe the Carrera 4, didn't have an IMS issue. They used 964 blocks.

turbos and gt cars were mezger based engines that had a different oil feed system and no IMS, those were based off the race engines of the times sooooo goooood!

It's still a 911, can't argue with that, gotta love it :D

Really enjoyed this review. I love the 996, it's my favourite 911 (and Porsche) probably because I'm a 90s kid. I never understood the fried egg headlights, I think they look cool. The 996 would make it in my dream garage for sure.
