Porsche Cayman 981 GTS Modes | Sport | PSE | Sport Plus

Car exhausts are the topic of the month here at Max Revs, with only a few more days to go until I fit my Soul Performance valved exhaust system on my Porsche Cayman 987.2 Sport.
In this video Tom kindly shares with us his Porsche Cayman 981 GTS and the 4 combinations of Sport mode with PSE:
i) Sport off PSE off, ii) Sport off PSE on, iii) Sport on PSE off, iv) Sport on PSE on
This video just goes to show how difficult it is to capture car exhaust audio, though you can definitely hear a deeper tone to the exhaust with PSE on.

I have a 981 Cayman S, and I rarely drive it without Sport mode activated, which by default actives PSE. I also have sports chrono, which does rev matching on down shifts in sports plus mode. That's a crazy good sound!!! Unless I'm on the track, I generally don't turn that on for the regular road. I've never tried all the combinations here, but interesting to hear!!

Cool vid! I just leave my 981 in Sports mode with PSE on all the time. It’s the best way to drive it ! The neighbours’ kids love the sound but the oldies not so much 😅🌈

They all sound gloriously ferocious. I like Sport Off and PSE Off...but I think that is purely down to that’s the one where you get chance to floor it a bit more than the others. Great video!

Hi Julian, I have to admit as someone seeking to purchase a Cayman R, I find your comment interesting. I would have thought you liked PSE on? No right or wrong here, just personal preferences. I forget the details, does your Cayman R have PSE?

MAX REVS I surprised myself too 😀 I imagine PSE in real life is more theatrical but on this video it does seems quite a subtle difference between off and on. The R has a Miltek exhaust which I am planning to drive/hear (and buy?!?) end of this month!

Only thing that has thrown me is that the car is black, which I want, but have only realised it is the Basalt Black Metallic and have learnt that this colour is not very black and can look purple or brown at times...vs a flat black gloss. That said, I have looked at videos/pics of Porsche’s in Basalt Black and I am telling myself (to try convince myself) that the metallic helps accentuate the curves of the car and that I shouldn’t worry about it. It’s taken two years of searches to find one with all the right spec and in black, and that waiting for a non metallic black R could be years to wait around for (especially in the same spec). It’s probably pre-purchase nerves. I did see a 987S in London yesterday in a beautiful mahogany brown metallic and maybe that was a sign as the metallic did lift the car in the sunlight, looked like a gem. Get the right spec car now in Basalt Black or wait until a non-metallic comes up for sale, that’s the dilemma. Good luck, I'm sure you won't be disappointed in either colour, and as you know, they're highly sought after. It would be difficult to go wrong with any colour!

In my GTS (manual), there is a sport and a sport plus button. It only burbles in S+. Also only in S+ does it auto-blip the downshifts. I think all sport does is open the vales, sharpen the throttle response (only 0.5 step as S+ would make it a whole step), and stiffen the dynamic engine mounts (again by 0.5 step). I don't have a damper button as I have the X73 sport suspension.

Thanks for sharing your comments. What I found interesting in this video clip, go to time code 2:20. Sport and PSE are both off, yet you hear exhaust crackles on throttle lift-off. Until this video was made, I didn’t think you got crackles from the exhaust with both modes off.

I have the identical spec to you. From my research it seems that GTS models also open an intake induction tube between the firewall in sport plus mode which is why they're loude in the cabin.

Both sound good! Both sound quite a bit 917K. My 987.1S on stick doesn’t sound as good. It’s not for the volume yours has. Perhaps that’s to do with the cat placement being different in the 987.2 (both primary and secondary in the header pipe). Also I note they both sound rather burbly on stat and idle. Mine doesn’t sound like that either. Perhaps it’s the audio.

Nice video , can any one tell me if you get down blips on a 987.2 3.4 pdk with sport and sport plus as I’m looking at retro fitting it at some point ? And has anyone on here ever remapped the pdk gearbox ? Keep up the good videos max looking forward to hearing your soul exhaust....

MAX REVS Hi max the cayman R in this clip funnily enough has “soul headers and exhaust” , it’s in sport plus mode but you can hear it rev matching and rev blips on down shifts .... my car hasn’t got the sport and sport plus but that’s where I want to be with my PDK ... I know the retro fit sport and sport plus doesn’t make pops and crackles on the 987.2 but it does rev match on gear change down .. Hi Happy Time, thanks for your latest comment. I think I may have misunderstood your first question. When you mentioned “blips” in your first email, I think you meant rev matching on downshift throttle blips? I misread you to mean exhaust cracks and pops. Every PDK has to rev match on downshift. If you are in too high a gear, at too high an rpm, the gearbox will simply reject your request to downshift. The sport and sport plus buttons, amongst other things, modify when the car changes gear, holding higher revs much longer, so when you shift down from say 6500 rpm, the throttle blips have to be more aggressive to rev match on downshift. Is this what you’re looking for? Without SPORT and SPORT PLUS, your PDK car already throttle blips on downshift, it has to. So are you looking to have the gearbox hold onto higher revs for longer, such that when you do downshift, the necessary throttle blip is greater than normal? Whatever you’re looking for, hope you get there! We all need our pet projects to keep sane ;-)

Doesn’t sport mode put the exhaust in sport mode by default? Or was it purposely switched off when put into sport?

This is an easy one for me... Soul performance wins hands down. Armytrix is just plain LOUD. If all you want is LOUDNESS, get the Armytrix.
