The Porsche Tiptronic transmission is actually a Mercedes Benz 722.6 5 speed auto trans that was used a lot in their high HP high torque models like the E55 AMG and the McLaren SLR This unit was known for being light weight and capable of handling 1000 HP/TQ. It was used in a lot Chrysler products where it was known as the NAG1.

Didn’t know they put in the SLR. Makes me have confidence in the reliability of the box. It’s barely being used In the cayman S.

the mercedes transmission was used only in 911 carrera and turbo, the rest got zf5hp

Great video Joe. 5 years ago, I bought my Porsche Carrera 996 C2. I was looking for a Manual, when a well priced Tiptronic came up. I test drove it and loved it. I still have it and planning it to be a keeper for a long long time. 👍🏁

Thank you!! I just don’t understand why they get so much hate. It is a really good box, it’s fitted to loads of other cars and never hear complaints. I love mine and will be keeping it a long time. Well I will now it needs a rebuild

Each to their own and I see your point; I’ve an automatic car that I use to commute or nip to the shops and it keeps life relaxed and simple. But my Cayman is purely for driving for fun and I’d really miss the feeling of rev matching for a downshift - that’s a big part of what I enjoy about the Cayman.

I totally get that. I’m a just a weird with driving, I don’t get as much out of changing gear myself as others do. Porsche steering and handling is so enjoyable I don’t miss not changing gear. I do feel a Rev matched downshift would be satisfying and sound incredible too! Thanks for the comment 👍

Totally agree Set out wanting a manual when a Boxster S that ticked all the boxes appeared at the right price with Tiptronic . For my daily drive completely the right decision. No need to think about gear changes just drive it, smooth as you like and still frighteningly fast car if required. Its a Porsche, 'nuff said.

Shifting from 3-4 in a 996 tiptronic is like a rocket shooting thru the skyline...I have a 2000 and I am a happy daily driver!!

If it's a daily driver I can see why you'd want an auto, and my daily is an auto. However for a fun car for track days or similar, manual is a must, it's just so more engaging.

100% agreed. Manual gives more control and just what is needed on a track day. This will be going to the Nurburgring and I doubt it will disappoint tho 😀

I have to desagree. The PDK gear box is learning about how you are driving. After few laps it will do everything so perfectly. Unless you're a pro, tiptronic and PDK are always better than the pilote. I'm doing casual track days and automatic is so much fun.

Thanks for creating this series. I too have a tiptronic, simply bought it used that way. While I dig stick for the fun, tip on Cayman feels intuitive to the driving experience as it is only you and the car. Closes thing to a motorcycle on 4 wheels. Cheers.

I think you're spot on with this video mate. As you said most people won't be able to change gear any quicker than the Tiptronic changes. I'm planning on a 997 911 this year and I wouldn't mind the Tiptronic at all. I think what I would do though is replace the buttons with a paddleshift like on the later cars. I think that would just increase the fun factor. Great video.

At least with the tiptronic you avoid a problem that some of the manuals have which is previous drivers that have constantly over revved the engine.

Great video! I bought my 2008 Cayman 987 5 sp manual 4 yrs ago. If i test drove it back then and it had a tiptronic i am pretty sure i still would have bought it, Its still a "Porsche ". An amzing car which i still love driving. Some days when i am stuck in traffic, i wish i had the tip. Will never sell this car , its timeless design, i think it will be a future classic. Subscribed.

I have a 993 tip, and never drive it in the automatic mode, because it take off in 2nd gear. I can shift it with the leaver, or the buttons on the steering wheel. It’s only a four speed. What a lot of people don’t understand is that the tourque converter locks up during 2nd gear, so there is no slip in the tourque converter after that, if you know how to do it you can blip the throttle on down shift, to get a smoother shift. Vic Elford explains how to do this in his high performance driving book. The only thing I don’t are the pesky buttons on the steering wheel. You can sometimes press them by mistake when going thru sharper corners. Wish they would have done paddle shifters instead. I run swepco 20 weight hydraulic transmission fluid in mine. It seems to smooth out the shifts.

Ooooh I didn’t know that! Il be trying that when I’m next out. To be fair I find it good on the move, sometimes awkward around town at 15-25 mph. Switching, sometimes harshly from 3rd to 4th.

@@JoeTalksCars Next time your cruising on the highway in the automatic mode, try flooring the peddle rapidly twice. It will downshift two gears, and take off like a rocket, and won’t shift up until redline. It puts the transmission in the most aggressive mode. I tried it yesterday, and it was scary fast. Make sure you have open straight road ahead of you. This is on a 993 four speed. Felt like the tourque converter was locked the whole time.

Interesting video and thanks for the review. I will say the PDK isn’t an auto it’s a manual transmission with gears, gear shafts and clutches. A true auto like the tiptronic has bands, torque converter and valve body (electrically controlled) BTW I like them all!! The PDK was a sequential trans developed for endurance racing a long time ago and then found itself on their street cars in 2009. For those haters you can adjust the shift points and shift speed for the TipTronic the harder it shifts the longer it will last actually (less ware on the disks with soft shifting) just get some nice trans and engine mounts lol!!!

That’s really interesting what you say about the hard shifts, might have to get that sorted. Assuming It’s like a remap. Glad you agree about the autos being good. I get why people hate them but I can guarantee most won’t have even tried. Where I live it’s better to have an auto. Even if it was way worse than a manual it suits my lifestyle. Of course, to each their own. I am simply articulating my reasons for wholeheartedly disagreeing with most of what is said in this video, but I have no intention to mock the author. Forgive the long post, but Twitter-like statements are useless to articulate an intelligent thought. It seems to me that the general idea of this video can be summed up as follows: If you are going to use the Cayman the same way you'd use your daily driver/grocery getter, then the tiptronic (or PDK, at the end of the day they do the same thing for the average user getting groceries), is the only way to go, BUT: if you were to go for a canyon run, mountain road spirited drive or to the track, then the manual is best. So, and forgive my cynicism, the real question here is how much of the time you spend in this car is grocery/work/doctor/mall driving to and from time, and how much time is fun time. Personally, if the first exceeds (and from what I'm understanding if far exceeds) the second, then why would you buy this car? I understand you have a daily (and fairly capable) car, which begs the question as to why would you buy something you don't need and then just use it instead of the daily car you have for purposes this car is not necessary and definitely not the best at, regardless of what transmission it comes with? This will succeed only at 2 things: 1) not enjoy the car most of the time, because it'll be driving around in situations where it is next to impossible to put it through its paces and 2) trivialize the experience of having it and driving it because nothing you constantly do every day and is the norm for you, will ever be or remain special. I personally find an automatic transmission in a sports car completely ridiculous as it really is an oxymoron. The purpose of the sports car is to enjoy challenging one's skills while driving it and to enjoy and appreciate its behaviour, composure (or lack of thereof in some circumstances); if the car does one of the 3 things an enthusiast driver needs to master and that are all equally important in getting the best out of the car and out of your experience, then why bother? I had decided to buy a 987.2 S manual (there are only about 3 dozens 2009 like that in Canada where I live) and decided to stick with that until I found one. I do have another car to drive and of course I could drive my CS every day (at least between April and November, generally speaking), but I would never do that, for the very reasons I stated above. In conclusion, why buy a car that is supposed to be aimed at enthusiasts, with a transmission that was born and developed with the purpose of trivializing the very experience one would aim at glorifying through the purchase of such a car?

Totally get all of your points but at the end of the day. It’s a Porsche, I get to drive to work in my Porsche, go to the shops in my Porsche, sit in it on the drive way. Whatever I may do with it it’s still a Porsche and a life goal for many. In regards to driving it properly, I take it out for fun also, it’s special and will remain special regardless. Look at the supercars in Knightsbridge, they all probably have a golf at home, but they choose the in appropriate car. I’d rather sit in traffic in my Porsche. 😊

​@@JoeTalksCars I understand your point, and I am aware of the peculiarity of my point of view: I simply don't get any particular kick out of the fact that I'm driving a Porsche. Not because I don't love it or don't particularly value the brand, I do, but because every car I purchase for fun has a value to me that is 90% in the intrinsic qualities of the car (love the look, love the performance, love the way it feels and how engaged I have to be and so on) and 10% on the fact that it is this car or that car, or more generally a car made by XY, no matter how prestigious. I see it as a tool for me to go out and having fun, so who makes it isn't particularly relevant, if not -in my case- to enjoy the feeling of sitting inside decades of glory in racing history which I have witnessed since I was a child.

@@giosimfra64 there is one key point I would like to make. I see your comments and although very thorough and articulate they miss the obvious. You dont own a Porsche, and maybe you could care less. Let me entice your senses. I have owned over 40 cars in my life and i'm 50...5 of those have been Porsche. 2 1990 928 s4's. 1 1995 993 C2 tippy 1 1997 986 boxster and recently purchased an early 2000 996 C2 tippy. All have been excellent, well maintained and well passed on to another when the time came. And its comes down to these traits only an owner will appreciate...there are not many 20 year old cars that when you close their door it shuts with the sound of a well made piece of machinery, solid and seals like new...the ergonomics in a Porsche are second to none and with that a Porsche, no matter where you are in the world from a toddler in a stroller, to an attractive woman, a seasoned professor or a young college athelete will turn their head in admiration, hell even envy because they know the car, the Porsche and they know it innately...now I can tell you that an older ferrari like a 308 GTO will feel like a Fiat with just the given age...hollow, ton of road noise and body creaks that will scare any ghost-hunter...and now a tip-tronic is just another feature that is perfect when 2 young professionals out of school who have a love relationship with Porsche can co-op and share a tippy because they are easier on the legs for a woman but the man can drive it the way he wants to as well...I hope this shed some light, and If you ever have the opportunity drive a Porsche, hell drive them all and find out why a Porsche enthusiast is in a class all of their own... cheers Gio and namaste my friend

@@maxalwaysgoesbyboat7715 I own a 2009 Porsche Cayman S manual. My reasons to buy this car are strictly related to its layout characteristics and handling dynamics. Prior to this I owned a 1993 Mazda RX7, which I still miss, in spite of all its quirks. I don't drive this car (nor drove the 7) for the most part, in "populated areas". It is irrelevant to me that if I'm seen in the Cayman, everyone will know I own a Porsche. It matters to me not one bit... I like the Porsche because of how it drives and because they have a great racing heritage. What people think about it or me driving isn't part of the equation. Actually, if anything, it has a relevance because I wouldn't like to be put in the same bucket as the so-called rich-assholes who don't put the turn signal on or drive like dickheads because they have a Porsche (or a BMW, or any other car of the likes... that seems to be a thing around here). Your argument about its engineering is well-taken and I agree with it on German Cars in general, but it becomes unimportant when justifying the purchase of a sports car. What I mean is, you can buy a Cayenne and experience the same door-closing, you can buy a VW and have the same experience, in so many words, you can buy a German car that is designed to go buy groceries and all that stuff will come with it. The difference here is the engine layout, the typical sound, the handling and the character. Those don't come with all Porsches or all German cars, but only with some. If I compare the 7 to the Cayman, I can tell you you are right about the fact that the Cayman feels more solid and of overall better quality. Without question. You can definitely add to that the practicality that the 7 doesn't have. Reliability wise I'd say the Cayman is vastly superior if you bought one past 2008. Prior to, the engine problems are present in both cars. My 7 was fine and I decided to modify-rebuild the engine and it was fine after that as well, just faster than before. Putting these consideration aside, the 7 was every bit as good as a sports car as the Cayman is. It actually felt much lighter on its feet (in spite of weighing in just slightly less than the Cayman), the turning just as precise (if not more precise), braking was excellent, it was also an easier car to drive under certain circumstances than the Cayman is (unless of course, the electronic nannies are on, in which case the Cayman is easier to drive). The 7 is a much rawer car, closer to a race car than the Cayman. So it is closer to what I like to experience. Very rough, very, very involved, very "analog", even though the Cayman is also a very "analog" car. My outlook is: I have a less quirky car, which I need to treat with less care and attention than the other. As a sports car, it is just as capable, maybe, but a bit slower under acceleration; the 7's suspension is objectively vastly superior, both in the front and in the back, not only from an engineering stand point, but also from a modifying and set up stand point. I am happy because of the fact that I wanted a different car (flat 6, mid-engine) and because of the racing heritage (and the practicality is also good when I am forced to use it because the daily is in the shop). But the Cayman is not -as a sports car, excluding all other considerations- better than the 7. The other considerations, however, definitely justify the almost double new car sticker price. At the time I purchased it, it was worth only a bit more than what I sold the 7 for, which was more than double what I bought it for. My purpose for having a sports car is to have fun driving it. To me the sports car things that are specific of the sports cars are the only ones that matter. If the Ferrari you mention is more fun to drive as far as it being a sports car, then it is a better car than the one I have. Hands down. I don't know that because I never drove one of those; but if it had creaks and what not, it would mean nothing to me... Those Ferraris had a tube chassis, like race cars used to have, which is something rather unique and of course they aren't going to have the same feel as a Porsche. As far as noises though, I can tell you that the Cayman is far from being immune to it (and I am not referring to the noises I bought it for, of course); I can just imagine how they will develop a few decades down the road. Porsches have had their fair share of disasters when it comes to engineering (IMS bearings and bore scoring come to mind). I understand the arguments of "utility" when it comes to the transmission, and you do make a good point, but, again, all that isn't an added value to the sports car, it is an added value to "a" car, and it is a practicality type of added value, it isn't in any way related to a better sports car. In fact, at a track, the manual Cayman is actually faster than the PDK.

We tend to view EVERYTHING from a position of how will it effect me and/or my status? BUT when you take in consideration how others feel about your car it opens a alternate paradigm or an unintended consequence and lets get real, there is something about seeing a fatbody Porsche slip onto the highway and the spoiler engages...the child who should have his seatbelt fully over his shoulder has his nose pressed against the glass...he is unknowingly setting a mendoze line for "when he gets big he's gonna drive that car, LOOK MOMMY! From the visuals and the chirping of the engine is tied to one car and one car only...Porsche, there is no substitute? IMHO, no there isn't...and this is my relationship to the best car in the world! cheers mate

Thanks Joe for this video. Being lucky to be in position to own a 997 and a 3.2, both stick, I enjoy my 964 Tip very much. It is challenging to learn how to command the gear change on curvy roads just by pressing the gas pedal. Let me add some facts that may be noted by some aircooled 911. enthusiasts. First, at that time the ergonomics of 911 was not perfect. So an absence of the third pedal allows you to enjoy a better driving position and handling. Secondly, with buying an used car with a tiptronic almost assures you that the engine was never overreved. Best regards from Bled.

Now that is very lucky to have both cars! I tend to stick the cayman in manual, let it hang onto each gear until the limiter. Makes it great for the backroads.

I have a Tiptronic 987 Boxster that I bought like you just because it was the one that came along in the budget range. I originally intended it as a weekend cruiser for my retirement. I actually am also an active tracker (not something I even considered before I bought the car). I rarely (almost never) manually change gears ever even on track. Tiptronic is a slight negative on track but generally it doesn't detract from the fun (and with an experienced driver really isn't that much slower).

@@JoeTalksCars It effectively becomes a 4 speed box on my car on track -- 4th maxes out at about 200kph and I never exceed that. It shifts at all the right points so I just let it do the work. The only really bad thing I have to say about it is that steering wheel button gear change system is demonic. But seeing as I never use manual anyway it's not the end of world.

My brother has a newer 987.2 with a PDK -- it came with the button shifters as well. I think it is Porsche engineering intransigence - they didn't invent it so were reluctant to adapt. But practically there is no (or very little) need for manual shifting at all so maybe Porsche had it right all along.

@@BrianSullivan yeah there is literally no point. I said in the video that it’s good for an overtake, being able to downshift but after planting the throttle and seeing how quick the car reacted I take it back. There isn’t much use to manual.

I specifically wanted the manual Cayman S. I do daily drive my Cayman, including a daily commute. Apart from allowing the gearbox to warm up, I don’t find any downsides. Because the gears are long and the engine has so much torque, I find myself driving around in 5th and 6th most of the time, and in town I’m usually in 3rd or 4th. I don’t do much motorway driving, as I prefer the A and B roads. I suppose part of it for me is that more and more cars, certainly performance cars, are coming out as automatic only, so it’s a sort of ‘last chance’ to own a manual sports car.

I used to dislike the Tiptronic transmissions, too (Knowing it from a 986 2.5l Boxster). However, after experiencing more automatic gearboxes and doing oil and filter changes, they improve a lot after a simple service. These cars are now a few years old and can do with a gearbox oil and filter change. As a daily car, automatic is definitely the way to go if you don't want to go to keep your stress level down. :)

Great video mate - sitting down here in NZ and one of these has popped up at a local dealer and has me thinking about trading my A250 Sport (which is an awesome wee hatch by the way). It's auto and you're right, bluddy hard to find a review on one that doesn't have a clutch... thanks for doing the mahi (work) and helping us out. And I agree; in this day and age there's little wrong with most autos (post 2000 probably) unless you're going onto a track or rallying it... I just need something easy to drive (buggered left shoulder) that can put a smile on may face through corners without having to go stupid speeds - one of these seems to tick a lot of boxes! Keep well up there!

the TIP is fine, the PDK was better when i tried it, but my 05 has it so that’s what ive got for a while. id rather have had a stick but i put 60K miles on it in 3 or so years and im glad sometimes that i had an automatic as it was my daily for a while.

Don’t doubt the PDK is better, driven a few Golfs with DSG and it’s meant to be better than that! Don’t see how but look forward to driving one one day. Would love a PDK next.

Thanks Stu! Really appreciate the great comments! I got mine from SUV 4X4 Prestige in Wetherby near York. Just taking care to find one with a full service history is key! Porsche dealer would be ideal but not sure if they would have any 987.1 as they are getting on a bit and would still have to pass their 100 point check or whatever it is. I was looking private also as there is much better deals to be had, I wouldn't be put off but Id take along a mechanic with knowledge of these cars to check it out. Hope this helps. Joe

Great video! Great car and... transmission. The Tiptronics are great... any negative narratives are by people who really don’t know the technology behind it. It’s a lot more than a “dumb” automatic... in fact, many Porsche drivers in the States never knew how to get the most out of the Tiptronic.

Great video and as I’m now quite a bit older .. I always remember what my grandfather told me “ drive like your old you’ll be fine your car will appreciate it and you’ll still get where your going in good time” .. wanna race around and rev /over heat your engine get a specific track car for that fetish …. I love cars looking at a cayman I’m just concerned some wanna be f1 dreamer dogged the shit out of the car .. to me … these especially used shouldn’t be dogged out raced etc ..just enjoyed responsibly

True but most people say driving like miss daisy will bring on bore score. They need to be driven hard sometimes. It’s just about servicing and letting it warm up/cool down correctly.

Great Video, bringing a bit of clarity to those Porsche absolute Purists who don't acknowledge the fact that people like me who love driving Porsches but have 3 slipped discs and struggle to drive a manual then the tiptronic is absolutely perfect not having to strain yourself every gear change. Glad you liked it. One of my oldest videos, still finding my feet at that point. I love my cayman Tiptronic still, like you said some people need to drive auto. Would be a shame to be a purist and miss out on driving one because you can’t manage a manual.

It's a great box! Agree fully with your traffic observations and let's face it, most times we're not thrashing down roads trying to beat golf GTi are we! Love my gen II C4 Tip!

That’s exactly it. Even when we are the tip is fine. Don’t know about the 911 but the caymans gearing is so long it’s in 3rd most of the time of B roads, you would need a serious mountain switchback to use all of the gears.

Buying used sometimes you got to go with what you get. And i got the tiptronic😅 Its fine. The respinse is fine. It rakes practice I guess. I do not care for the placement of the shifter on the front of the wheel. Id much prwfer o. The back side or even the old style down on the gear selection inbetween the seats

OK. It is a nice auto, but I just could not get on with the low gears or the tip If you really like driving it has to be manual. When I get really old I might change my 911 997 for an auto. But I'll never bother with tip.

The only thing I do dislike is the fact it races the gears, 5th gear before I get to the end of the road. Other than that I am quite happy. Enjoy your 997 tho, still one of my favourite of all the 911 iterations.

I have a manual (987.1 Bxtr) and sometimes I wish I had an auto / tip (especially in traffic but I don't drive the car on a daily basis). I think those "purists" wanting to get manual cars, that's fine, but bashing tip / auto / pdk is just wrong, ignorance and snobby IMHO, as the world is rapidly evolving / changing. To be consistent, I would "accept / forgive " those auto / tip bashers if they only use analog (not digital) flip phones, only listen to vinyl records and not watch major racing events (not sure whether there is even ONE racing event with "true, third pedal, pure" manual tranny.

this is a Porsche and by definition, shouldn't be comfortable/boring to drive, should be excitement/fun. If you want comfortable drive by a Prius.

Yeah I would normally agree but there is some fun to be had from simply planting it and waiting for the car to kick down and squat. Its quicker than most would have you believe.

well i belive you have the zf5hp transmission on this one, there is so much hate about it because that transmission was used in many many cars, bmw, audi, vw and some british cars, and that transmission overall is not very reliablle, thats why everyone dont like it, especially in a porsche

Ahh that makes sense, I was under the impression it was a `merc box. I knew it was a torque convertor and to be honest its been fine so far, the engine not so much haha.

It is a very reliable transmission, unless you never change the fluid and filter. I have never seen one fail if it has been maintained. I have never heard any one but you state that is not very reliable.

@@rodgraff1782 trust me, i wouldnt say it just because i want to, i wish that it was a reliable transmission belive me, but you can do your own research, you can see for yourself, there are an abundance of information on that zf5hp transmission, i dont hate the car, i like it a lot its just that period of time early 2000 where the zf transmission where used in a lot of cars including porche but the actual transmission by itself was not a quality build, the mercedes benz had the best auto at that time but the ZF transmission where purely build

@@sergiutabirta7636 I have been driving Porsches for 33 years, and have owned 2 tips a 1998 and a 1999. Absolutely no issues. Do you realize that they operate without problems on the Porsche Turbos? If they weren’t robust, they wouldn’t stand up to that power. If you look at some reviews, you’ll see mentioned very often that it is a robust dependable unit. I’m not saying that I worship them, but to say they are not reliable in our Porsches is just not true. You’re certainly welcome to your opinion. I have no experience with other makes that use this transmission. As I mentioned before, I believe you are the only one I’ve heard make the remark that they are no good. I do know that most Porsche people don’t want Tip cars, but it’s not because of reliability problems. There is a 15-20 percent price deduction, when you go to sell a Tip Porsche

First it's semi-automatic as you can change gears manually by buttons. Secondly the tipT is built by Mercedes-Benz. Are you sure this is 5-speed Mercedes Benz 5G-Tronic and not the 5-speed ZF 5HP19 automatic?

I suppose it is a semi automatic but you never hear it called that. I suppose its because the PDK and DSG would be known as semi automatics but they are quite different being a manual box controlled by and auto. Its 100% a 5 speed Mercedes Box as fitted to the SLR ect.

@@JoeTalksCars did you know Volkswagen made a similar semi automatic transmission in 68' for the beetle. It was a mechanical ancestor to all these. I'm considering buying a 996 turbo with one of these transmissions. Thanks for the vid

996 and early 997 pre pdk have the Mercedes’ Benz 5g tronic gearboxes. Caymans and Boxters have ZF5HP-19 units, specifically ones that came from Audi c5 chassis and Vw b5 Passats, the only difference is that Porsche units have shorter final drives. I repair Porsches for a living. That’s y I know and I own 2 Porsches.

@@jarednorton6350 deep into the menus on the left stalk. Speed limiter or something, doesn’t stop you going quick but a friendly reminder you are in banning territory is what I have it on for 😆
