This is the same as they do if there is an accident pre-race. Pull everything from the wrecked chassis and put it into a new one. The chassis is a part like any of the other thousands of parts.

This was fantastic, really brilliant. I have a few question's though? Is the original engine and gearbox used in the "new" car? When a car is "reshelled" due to damage as in this scenario why does the "new" chassis retain the original chassis number? Technically its a new car, no? What happens to the damaged chassis? Is it stored somewhere or scraped?

I think you mean to say "repair" not "restore" as restorations are most commonly associated to older cars where both damage and general materials degradation are returned to their original state.

Why not repair the damaged chassis? If anybody can do that it would be the factory where it was built... I mean a chassis is constructed from many separate pieces and welded together. What am I missing?

Safety reasons. The old chassis couldn’t be saved.

If it’s bend there’s only so much you can do. Also there could be many cracks you can’t see without a complete ultrasound of every part which would be completely unrealistic!

Warum macht man das bei dem Aufbau nicht andersherum? Also warum baut man an das kaputte Chassis nicht Neuteile dran sondern baut die alten an ein neues Chassi?

That's not restoration. It's building a new car. It's what we call in Australia "Rebirthing" which is completely illegal.

Why is illegal my friend. That's a blank chassis ( no vin number) , is a race car, in Australia when someone crash a car, what do they do? Send it to the recycling center or send it to a body shop. Well is a full race car chassis and you can do whatever you want to do with it forever and beyond

Sehe ich genauso. Nach dem DTM Ende '93/'94 ist die DTM nicht mehr ! Punkt. Das was sich heutzutage "DTM" nennt, ist keine "DTM". Die Fahrzeuge haben nichts, aber auch gar nichts mit dem Gedanken hinter dem Kürzel gemeinsam. Das ist ne verkappte GTC oder ähnliches mit nem neuen ( alten ) Aufkleber. Für mich, der die DTM von Anfang an verfolgt hat, ist sie in ihrer jetzigen Form absolut uninteressant.

What a joke, they just moved the few leftover pieces on a new chassis.. and stickers with approval as well, so that makes it a fake.. you see KZbinrs that manage to do a more honest job ! I'm sure the car is back to normal, because its a new car, not a restored one.

It's a race car. Chassis swaps like this can even be done during a race weekend. I'm sure Porsche will survive you not visiting their museum just because of this...
