Hey Eric, try shimming the spark plug to remove it out of the way to confirm that is causing the dip in air flow

Most common size caddy engines are 425, 472, 500. Surprisingly, all the same heads and intakes.
@b.c4066
@b.c4066 3 жыл бұрын
Not surprising, they were built for torque, they had to move a 4500-5000 pound car with 3.08 gears, 1100 rpm stall, and not buzz themselves to death with a power glide or 3 speed available at the time. They were barges. The increase in cubic inches over the years is a result of the epa emissions and having to make the same torque with less compression. If you consider all that, it's logical the way the platform progressed.
@GUEST-qw4te
@GUEST-qw4te 3 жыл бұрын
@@b.c4066 a benefit to this, was the 425 was 100pds lighter than the 500. Engine masters had a team build one, I'd look for info on it, it might help.

Please make a part 2 so I can understand better on the spark plug. Are you going to add aluminum in that area to help increase cfm by smoothing out the spark plug? What i mean is are you going to make like a ramp so the air can either flow around the spark plug and over it without hitting any restrictions

So, looks like setting spark plug to land roughly 0.100 less intrusion fixes most flat spotting. I wonder if theres room to turn it towards exhaust valve say... 5 degrees for best results? This is some good work - very glad I watched.

Why not shift the exhaust valve to a 18-20 ° if it can to put a bigger intake valve in it if it can get the exhaust valve out of the way ? It might leave more material in the intake valve pocket for more strength for the spring pressures of modern stuff

I enjoyed your. Vid.,- would using the P1 valve in P3 with everyrhing else that was done in P3 help to fix the dip in #s? I'm thinking a little more area,between the edge of the valve and the spark plug, for air flow off the valve when it's above 800 lift.

Because the bigger valve did not gain more flow does that mean the pinch point cross section is to small? Is there a way to check velocity on either side of the pinch point ?
@jrdmotorsports9718
@jrdmotorsports9718 3 жыл бұрын
There is a way to test on a bench. But what does it really matter, if the mcsa, especially at the pinch, is way too small for the application? How would "velocity" fix it. Knowing that velocity speeds with restriction...

And what does all that tell you when compared to a real live running engine? Not much unfortunately. Cool as a tool to compare differences, but not for making power. The chamber actually IS an extension of the port, as is the bore and the intake manifold, and should be taken into consideration when doing this stuff.

You put a Bigger Valve , 2.350 vs 2.250= .100 , 050 Closer to Chamber Wall- Shrouding -.050 Closer to Sparkplug ??? If you think the Sparkplug is in the Flow Path, put a Washer under Sparkplug- Plug Spacers-Alinement of of Tip ?

Great video! It’s long because you’ve got a lot to pass on, so thanks! Two questions about how your port works and how you develop the shape. First, would an angle change on the modified vane in the bowl have any beneficial effect? With the port aimed at the cylinder wall, it seems like giving the air a little bias towards turning might be helpful. Maybe not, since you’ve done this many times and I’m only imagining the flow. Second, DV uses those flow balls to manage shrouding between the valve and chamber. When you went to the bigger valve, it’s edge got closer to the chamber edge on one side and the spark plug on the other. If you used the various size flow balls to direct slight changes to available flow area at different lifts, you could see/feel the interference of that spark plug, which has to be adjusted anyway as you pointed out. This was one of your most interesting videos! Thanks, Eric!
@Crysmatic

you keep saying you "need" a bigger valve, but do you go by throat area, or flow at peak cam lift? because 387 cfm will easily support 800 bhp. What would you do if a guy is happy with 650 or 700 hp?
@WeingartnerRacing

You need area. For instance to gain curtain area you can either add lift or but a bigger valve. The super high lift is not practical with Cadillacs.

You can make them longer for me. Most technical ones better. Simple tool flag opened my ideas. You just showed us how to in simple way improove any port. With good vacum cleaner and flag you can find problems in any old crap that is not worth all the tooling to flowbench it but improve economy or feel of engine. I like the way you delivery it, no bulshit just knowledge! Most of stuff you deal with I no idea, v8 is rare to work on but old 30s 40s 50s stuff I do work on can be simply improved with flag!

Nice Job Eric! I think your following Darrin Morgan fairly closely! I think you said you learned from him! 👍🏻 Holdner has a bunch of caddy engine videos up, from probably 1 year ago! We did a few, slightly upgraded rebuilds on caddy engines, years ago! I do know for sure that if you try to run 5000rpm, the rockers fail horribly! You have to get a complete aftermarket valvetrain upgrade to go past 5000! We did have a guy up this way that runs 500s @ he takes his to 7200rpm with the upgraded valvetrain & oiling modifications! It’s possible the head your working on is for Richards guy? Since there is only a few caddy engine guys! Anyway Richards videos show all the different stuff available for them! Tested on the caddy guys dyno & @ his shop! Maybe good info for you, to see what’s available, what works & what doesn’t! Please spend Sunday with your wife, out of the shop, winter is coming quickly enough, where you’ll have plenty of time to be in shop! Leaves already starting to change up here in NE! You don’t need to work yourself sick! I’ve seen people do it! Thanks again! Glad you found George Bryces tech talk Tuesday! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🏆🏆🏆🏆🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
