When you drove under the underpass, that area is called "the acre". The Delaware river tends to flood this area, so unfortunately those nice houses there are not occupied because of this.

Shopping in Matamoras (actually Westfall Township) is within walking in distance from where you were. In actuality, Port Jervis has few places to shop. Food stores (Price Chopper and Shop-Rite, good-sized strip mall, Lowe’s, Home Depot, WalMart, all in Westfall Township, just beyond the I-84 ramps.

When I was a kid, Matamoros was a renowned speed trap. Now I’m curious about the history of passenger rail along the river.

The high rise apartments is the old Minisink Hotel, this is where the Brotherhood of Railroad Breakmen was chartered in the 1870's.. The Civil War cannon is the Steven Crain and Veterans Park. Steven Crain lived one block from that park and wrote The Red Badge Of Courage in that park.

I know some things about Port Jervis NY, I live here and I drove taxi in Port for 15 years.

If your looking for touristy, go to Milford,PA., that's the next town.

Yeah, I don't know if I'm looking for touristy but I have thought about going back to Milford to film. Was there once during pre-youtube days.
