Thanks Bru for the great Videos so far. Spent many holidays there as a youngster fishing with cousins and uncles. Even the Fisher ladies. Although its not my hometown watching you makes me homesick. My family is from there. Thanks for sharing your tackle and rigging. Jigging there has been going on for very long and is sad to see. seems to be getting worse. Cant wait for the next vid. Thanks Vernon, ya it is a concern. The issue is there are people buying these fish, there’s a whole market being created. My take is if we get rid of the market we can win this fight and save the Garrick species. Glad you enjoyed the videos , episode 3 almost done 😄 thanks and take care

Soon as I heard you ask if he is gonna gaff it I was just asking myself the same thing when I saw the gaff in his hand🙈 I was just as happy as you when you said the shark came off👌👍 top stuff bru.. The jigging is swaak I understand if the oues don't have money and are fishing to feed their family but those garrick are massive and they can fish so even if they catch just one a day is more than sufficient they don't have to take over 30 a day" they must be selling them cheap I'm sure it's really 💔!!
@KentsFishing3 жыл бұрын
Yes I was not going to let them gaff that shark. I mean why 🤷♂️ they not keeping it so why? Anyways happy it came off as well! I spoke to the guys and told them what we all about and they understood and agree. They are good guys. This is what we need to do as anglers, teach , preach, practice safe , responsible, sustainable fishing. The Garrick are going to be extinct if this continues because they are killing breeding stock! They are selling them cheap, the market needs to stop buying! It’s very sad…

Genuine question - why is this form of jigging illegal but the 'Jig and drop' method used by many "pro's" during the sardine run not? Surely there is a chance to jig game fish amongst the sards?
@KentsFishing3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gerhard, Darren and I have also been asking that question. I don’t like the drop shot jig drop into the sards for the same reason. Lure fishing totally different story. There’s no striking and hitting and hoping if you reeling in a paddle tail or a buck tail or a spoon etc etc

@@KentsFishing looking fwd to it, thanks bru!
@allistairleong67553 жыл бұрын
@Gerhard vd Walt ,my understanding is when you jigging 'jig and drop' during the Sardine run the intention is to jig a Sardine and then that sardine will then be left in the water as your live bait or bait for a game fish. When those guys are Jigging for the Garrick they are intentionally targeting the Garrick and you can see their rigs are set up to hit Garrick not a bait fish. @Kents Fishing would my review of the two Jigging methods be correct and can you confirm as I am not sure is the Jig and drop method for the sardine legal ? My understanding is all forms of Jigging with a few trebbles on your line and no bait is illegal.
@KentsFishing3 жыл бұрын
@@allistairleong6755 hi 👋 yes you have explained both methods correctly. Unfortunately only the jigging method used to jig Garrick with treble hooks and no bait is deemed illegal. The jig and drop method you described used in the sardine run is still legal. Yep I know, sounds crazy but ya. I myself will not practice this method. Thanks Alistair and take care

Howzit bru. Lovely videos and thank you for not making us wait for episodes. I'm a new fisherman from kzn. Is jigging not allowed only in Port St John's or elsewhere as well. Heading to Shelly Beach in 2 weeks time any guidelines or tips for the area? Thanks bru
@beastmode35023 жыл бұрын
Jigging is illegal period under South Africa 🇿🇦.. You ( example ) throw treble hooks and drag it and just hook a fish in the back tail abdomen etc and pull it out . It’s not fishing
@Theo-id1bc3 жыл бұрын
@@beastmode3502 thank you. As I said new to the sport. I thought jigging in The sense of rubber tail or lure. I appreciate you explaining that to me. Thanks again.
@KentsFishing3 жыл бұрын
Illegal jigging practice is with treble hooks and you cast into the shoal and forcefully try and tow a fish out of the water! Fishing with lures any type of lure is not illegal jigging because with lures you are mimicking a fish or bait movement and you entice the fish to bite. So 2 different methods hope that helps
@Theo-id1bc3 жыл бұрын
@@KentsFishing thanks bru that really helps never being jigging and atleast I know now about that. Want to try and catch some nice fish on light tackle for the fight and see how that goes. Should be some nice fun messing around.

Im confused? I thought jigging is allowed for fishing? Or is it only off shore? Surely drop shot and plug throwing is jigging. I mean you even rig a plastic to a jig head?
@KentsFishing3 жыл бұрын
Hi Glenn, the illegal jigging we refer to is a practice where a trace with 3 / 4 sometimes 5 treble hooks are attached to a heavy sinker line. The angler then casts this into the Garrick that are making their way to the river and estuary to spawn. The angler the forcefully tries to jig one of these fish swimming past on its side or where ever they can hook the fish. Some fish get away but then are scared badly making them vulnerable to predators and they could die. These fish are breeding stock and if they are forcefully removed like this then we might not have Garrick fish in the future. Lure fishing with jig heads / paddle tail/ rapala etc is something totally different. Fish are not forcefully jigged out of the water. When we fish with these we are mimicking the movement of bait fish to entice fish to take the lure. Very different to illegal jigging. Our intention when we fish for these game fish is for the sport , take a photo and safely release them. I hope to get a tagging kit so that I could help tag these fish to aid the study and science of fish. I hope this helps. There’s also info on the net about illegal jigging. Thanks and take care
